Examining White Privilege Retreat: :lmaohttps://www.uvm.edu/~asc/images/exam.pngThe ALANA Student Center (ASC) and a dedicated committee of campus colleagues are excited to announce Examining White Privilege: A Retreat for Undergraduate Students Who Self-Identify as White. It’s a new retreat specifically for white students to engage in building a stronger and inclusive campus community.
Program Description:Students will have the opportunity to:

conceptualize and articulate whiteness from a personal and systematic lens;
recognize and understand white privilege from an individual experience
as well as the impact of white privilege on the UVM community and beyond;
build a community of dialogue and support in taking action against racism.

We will explore questions like:

What does it mean to be white? How does whiteness impact you?
What action steps can you take individually to interrupt racism?
How can we make UVM a more inclusive community?

Logistics:The retreat is FREE and will be held November 13-15 at the Common Ground Family Center in Starksboro, VT (meals are provided). Testimonials"I enjoyed the Examining White Privilege retreat because it provided a safe space to learn about yourself and others and how we experience and understand privilege and systems of oppression. The activities were engaging and challenged me as a participant to be open-minded and see different perspectives…..” - Cora, Class of 2015
"EWPR was a great opportunity to talk about an identity that I had not previously felt equipped to comfortably discuss. Getting the chance to go off campus and talk about systems of power with people I wouldn't have met otherwise made the retreat a valuable experience." - Abby, Class of 2017
"EWPR gave me the chance to explore my own identities more deeply, to learn more about systems of privilege and oppression, and to connect with other students who are interested in discussing social justice and working to create change here on our campus." - Emily, Class of 2015
"The Examining White Privilege retreat helped me to open up to difficult conversations about race in an environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and learning. The most valuable part of this affinity space, as with any, is being surrounded with people who share something in common with you and are willing to talk about what that identity means and how it shows up in our lives." - Nick, Class of 2017

What is the White Privilege Conference?
WPC is a conference that examines challenging concepts of privilege and oppression and offers solutions and team building strategies to work toward a more equitable world.
It is not a conference designed to attack, degrade or beat up on white folks.
It is not a conference designed to rally white supremacist groups.
WPC is a conference designed to examine issues of privilege beyond skin color. WPC is open to everyone and invites diverse perspectives to provide a comprehensive look at issues of privilege including: race, gender, sexuality, class, disability, etc. — the ways we all experience some form of privilege, and how we’re all affected by that privilege.
WPC attracts students, professionals, activists, parents, and community leaders/members from diverse perspectives. WPC welcomes folks with varying levels of experience addressing issues of diversity, cultural competency, and multiculturalism.
WPC is committed to a philosophy of “understanding, respecting and connecting.”
Who attends the WPC?
The conference is unique in its ability to bring together high school and college students, teachers, university faculty and higher education professionals, nonprofit staff, activists, social workers and counselors, healthcare workers, and members of the spiritual community and corporate arena. Although the most acute judges of the witches and even the witches themselves, were convinced of the guilt of witchery, the guilt nevertheless was non-existent. It is thus with all guilt.

Let me know when this stuff is mandatory. Until then, it's just another silly student activity among thousands for kids trying to figure themselves out.
