Galveston is already evacuating. A&M-G starting making students leave at noon today. That NOAA map puts the eye just east of Houston, giving the dirty side to Houston.

The Eye of Katrina didnt hit all those towns in Alabama and Mississippi that were destroyed, they were hit dead on by the dirty side.

Houston will not have a problem other than some area flooding.

No need to evacuate.

Extra Stout
09-20-2005, 12:43 PM
Seriously, where in town do you live? Only the low-lying areas along the coast, along Galveston Bay, and near the Ship Channel are supposed to evacuate. Anybody else just clogs up the highways more than necessary.

spurster
09-20-2005, 12:46 PM
Do you really need an excuse to move from Houston?

To answer your question, which side of the sprawl do you live on? There is a big difference here from south to north. Also, how prone is your area to flooding?

If south or east side or flood-plone, take off Thursday night with your computer backups and make a 3-day weekend out of it.

Extra Stout

Only those living in the purple and green areas need to evacuate. If you're in the orange or pink, evacuation for this storm is just acting on the safe side.

I live downtown. About 5 blocks from Minute Maid Park.Did your area flood during Allison?

If so, find higher ground to ride out the storm.

If not, make preparations to loot retail stores and homes in the Bay Area as soon as the storm surge recedes.

Heh. I guess we really shouldn't worry. Where Spurs_Fan_In_Exile and I live doesn't even rate on the evac map.

In all seriousness, downtown has a real tendency to flood. Ask your neighbors if they flooded during Allison, and go from there. I'm worried about winds and tornadoes more than anything else, but you'll be locked into your area, so make sure you're set on food and drink.

Man, as much as I want to see a 'cane, I wouldn't stick around for a cat 4 or 5. If I felt comfortable in my home, I might stick around for a cat 3. I'll probably end up chasing a cat 2 or cat 1 in the not too distant future.

I wouldn't take any chances.

If you don't have friends or relatives to stay with, forget hotels/motels within 75 miles of San Antonio. They are basically all booked up the 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th. I was trying to help someone earlier tonight.

I live in a hundred year old building that I consider safe. It is solid.

Well my house is allready booked for the rest of the week and/or weekend.

I got 2 people evecuating from Clute - mandatory evac for them, have to be out by 6pm tonight.

And I have 5 people coming here from Victoria - about 75% sure on this. Thier trailer got damaged last hurricane and that was just a glancing blow from a Cat 1. It's on a permant foundation but it had shifted.. and this huge tree 4 feet from the side of the house looks to be rotting in the middle.. :(

That high pressure ridge will determine your fate and there is still not enough data to predict it's movement precisely...if it moves east before they are currently "expecting" it to you will be well and truly fucked...looks like this thing could be a 4 or 5 when it hits and by the time you know for sure you more than likely won't be able to get out...

Run Forest, run!

Board up and get out, dude. It's a Cat 4 now. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of laziness.

San Antonio may not be all that safe flood-wise. No drainage plus hurricanes spawn tornados and SA has been hit a few times by hurricane spin-offs, including the Medical Center area apartments and VA Hospital Cooling tower several years ago.

:lol Not that a tornado would choose that area again, but yes that particular one took the roof off the apartments on Medical Center Dr. near the post office and Wendys. Then it bounced up and then came back down on the other side of Wurzbach and took out one of the two cooling towers of the hospital. It was miraculous that it didn't hit the University (Bexar County) Hospital or VA Hospital main buildings.

Flooding in South Texas is a bigger concern and could be worse than the floods in 2002 that nailed us.

I was in Houston that weekend in 2001 when tha tropical storm hit and they had all that flooding....
anyway. my hotel was on the Northwest side and all the roads around it flooded.. .then the parking garage flooded.... then the 1st floor flooded to about 3 1/2 feet.

My son and I left Baytown yesterday at 3 on I-10 and it took us 8 hours to get to SA. A friend of mine went north on 59 to cut across 105 and then hit 21, and he was still on the road at 1AM. Its getting windy here. Flags are really movin.

BTW: I am right now at the JFK Suite in the Rice Hotel. JFK and Jackie spent the night here before he went to Dallas and was shot. Pretty cool stuff.
