I often wondered why Ray played this role....I often thought it should have been Kobe...but Kobe was possessed after his 3 airballs against Utah and wanted no part of movies at that time...
According to Sports Illustrated's Lee Jenkins (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/nba/news/20131016/kobe-bryant-lakers-si-cover-story/#ixzz2hzbtGQmh), it almost happened during the summer of 1997, but Kobe turned the role down because a playoff loss to the Utah Jazz (http://bleacherreport.com/utah-jazz) was still fresh in his mind:
That summer Spike Lee begins filming He Got Game, a movie with Denzel Washington about a basketball prodigy named Jesus Shuttlesworth. "I want you to be part of it," Lee tells Bryant. "Thank you but no thank you," Bryant says. "This summer is too big for me." Ray Allen (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/players/3080/index.html) lands the role as Shuttlesworth.
