View Full Version : Ags vs. Texas State, Thursday 7:30 PM

Aggie Hoopsfan

This comes from a guy who works at Fox Sports SW...

7:30 air time on FSN, 7:38 kickoff.

The only thing that they are waiting for is an official announcement that will come from Gates' office. Gates has agreed tentatively to this, but wants to see a few more hurricane track updates before pulling the trigger. Everyone (A&M and TSU) has been told to prepare for Thursday. Only thing going on now in planning is logistical stuff that can be cancelled on a moments notice.

A&M got lucky. TxSt had a penalty for a man down field. So they had 3rd n goal at the 13 yrd line and didn't get a td and then they went for it on 4th and didn't get it. So still same score.

scott
09-22-2005, 11:14 PM
Texas State had 2nd and goal on the 3 and a BS offensive pass interference call knocked them back 15 yards. A TD there would have made it a 6 point game.

Texas State has been really sloppy, making dumb mistakes. I"m not sure that they couldn't have beat A&M if not for penalties and 2 bonehead fumbles (especially the muffed punt in the first quarter). They essentially handed A&M 17 points with those mistakes.

Texas withstanding, the Big 12 may be the weakest major conference in college football this year. The only other half decent team in the conference is Tech.

It's funny that the 2 best teams in the nation (USC, Texas) come from the 2 weakest conferences (Pac-10, Big 12).

The likelyhood of getting 2 more possessions is slim in that instance, and when you are a team like Texas State, you can't be playing for a tie at College Station. Definitely don't kick the FG there.

scott
09-22-2005, 11:35 PM
Well, Texas State's defense looked like a D1-AA school going against a big D1 school. They allowed 300 yards passing, 200 yards to a receiver, and 100 yards to an RB, first time A&M had ever achieved that in a single game. They almost allowed McNeal to become the first player in NCAA history to have back-to-back 300 yard throwing 100 yard rushing games (according to the announcers). Texas State only forced 2 punts all game (actually 3, but were called for roughing the kicker on 1 of them). So, asking them to stop A&M once when the Aggies were faced with possible defeat was probably too much, let alone twice.

It was a very good showing by Texas State though. They should handle their conference and perhaps put up a good showing in the D1-AA playoffs. They were ranked #14 in the nation going in, I wouldn't be surprised to see their ranking go up despite the loss.

Ohio State should never be confused with an offensive juggernaught, so the 22 points the Buckeyes put up should be a concern. Other than that, OSU is as good as advertised. Texas should be proud of putting up 25 on that defense, and sacking up they way they did to win the game. Somewhere in the top 10, Ohio State deserves a place.

The team that I feel really gets overlooked, is Louisville. I feel they are truely the #3 team in the country right now.

Still think Texas may have some trouble in Lubbock. The Ghost of Kliff Kingsbury still lingers in Mack's memory banks.

Marcus Bryant

OSU has a mid-October date with the Spartans that should be interesting. If they drop that game, all of a sudden a Texas win there plus a couple of blowouts of Rice and UL-Breaux Bridge doesn't look as great.

Just saying, personally I don't care one way or another how Texas fares this season. For the sanity of some people I know, I do hope they manage to beat OU, especially this season.

The OSU team at the end of last year was a top 5 team. They pretty much returned everyone so logic tells you they are still darn good. Spartans on the other hand are good too, but OSU should handle them. Texas losing to OU would be like the spurs losing to the lakers last year.

Marcus Bryant
09-23-2005, 12:04 AM
Well, the OSU win is what Texas has to justify their ranking. As for OU, yeah, Texas should win, but Stoops seems to be in Mack's head such that even in a rebuilding year OU still has a shot.

Maybe I don't get your point here. The State QB was a lot better than I expected, but not as good as Whitehurst or even SMU's Romo.

If memory serves, and I wasn't paying full attention to the TV, it was about a 23 yard FG, maybe a little shorter than the one they kicked on the previous possession. The Aggies jumped on a fumble in Bobcat territory to get possession with the game about 5-6 minutes old leading 3-0.

It was actually a good call if the Aggies were just looking to blow the game open, or were just testing a fake in a game situation. Or if Fran saw a dangerous yet substandard opponent in State and didn't want to get humiliated like Stanford last week against UC-Davis.

I dunno, man. I'm not going to say it was classless after seeing the final score. But the timing considering the opponent was a little awkward.

Marcus Bryant
09-23-2005, 02:22 AM
Since it was done in the 1st, I don't see the problem. Overall, I think it was a combo of the team playing down to the competition, the strength of the opponent going up against the D's weakest link and probably a little bit of the craziness of this week with the rescheduling factored in. The SMU game was close at half before they blew the Ponies out.

I just walked into my apartment after watching that game from the press box in the first quarter and a bit of the second and the rest of the game from the field.

College Station sure knows how to put on a college football game. Tough loss for the Bobcats, but I think we did a lot better than people gave us a chance for.

A lot of A&M's fans that I talked to were surprised at the level of competition the Bobcats put up.

The Aggies had a short work week, as they just played Sat and were not prepared to play Thursday. They only found out that they were playing Thur on Wednesday. On the flip side, Texas St was off the week before so had 11 days to prepare for A&M.

This was expected from my point of view.

A&M played w/o a lot of emotion because they were supposed to win...it was a lose lose situation for them and Texas St had nothing to lose.

I am very impressed with the Ag's offense. Their game with Tech will be something like 56-52, and should be the most fun game of the year.

Sounds like excuses to me. Ags are 1A and there is really no reason this shouldn't have been a blowout. What it boils down to is that TxState came to play when nobody gave them a chance. Coming into the game, nobody was saying "well, this might be close because TxState had more time to prepare". No, it was all talk about how bad the score was going to be. Now all of the sudden after cutting it close to a 1-AA school, the excuses come in. I was damn proud of my school and I think we showed that we are ready to play 1-A ball in the next few years. Maybe not in the Big 12, but I would say that we can contend in C-USA or the WAC.

Is this game part of a scheduled 2 home/ 1 away series for SWT?

If they scheduled the 1 "away" game two years from now at San Marcos, that would probably go a long way in getting "TxState" the required home attendance to jump to Div IA.

TSU is Tarleton State University.

And Texas Southern.

The admin made a big (albeit not big enough) push to ask the locals not to call it TSU. That failed badly.

Now, they're seeking a trademark on "State" similar to UT's "Texas" and Texas Tech's "Tech."

AFAIK, there are no future schedulings of A&M, especially @ Bobcat. This game was originally scheduled by previous coach Manny Matsakis. When he was fired for poor performance and NCAA violations, Coach Bailiff came on and tried to get out of the A&M game only to be told it would cost an extraordinary amount of money; money State doesn't have to give.

This team has a real shot at making some noise in the D-1AA playoffs and a hell of a shot to win the Southland.

Just calm down, cowboy. Your school has a history of this.:lol

I think the school has had like 4 name changes. Before Southwest Texas, it was Texas State Teacher's College or something like that.

But SWT was what it has been known as all my life. People don't just stop calling it that because they decided to change a few signs.

And every single person I know who graduated from there before the change are pissed off about it. One went as far to say to a fundraiser, "I graduated from SWT, not Texas State". :lol

But, it was necessary, seeing how they want to develop the school into more of a university flagship school to compete with A&M & t.u.

As somebody who has been a student at both, I like them both.

I understand the admin's argument about the name change and the help it will have to develop the university in all aspects, but I also understand the history behind SWT.

People like that (I graduated from SWT, not Texas State) do irk me, though. LBJ didn't seem to have a problem with the school after it changed its name back in the day.

My mom gets it all the time from her co-workers who graduated from SWT and they know I go here now.

:lol

But, it was necessary, seeing how they want to develop the school into more of a university flagship school to compete with A&M & t.u.with a few more recruits it looks like they'll be able to at least compete with A&M athletically.:lol :lol

I'm JK. couldn't resist.

I'm not mad, just can't understand why its so hard. I always knew it as SWT too, I got accepted to SWT, and attended class for 2 years at SWT. Then it changed and I graduated from Texas State. How many people still call A&M Kingsville Texas A&I? We are trying to move to D1-A as well as recruiting students from out of state. SWT sounds like a small regional school when, in fact, it has almost 30k students now and much tougher admission standards than most other state schools in TX. I too have some stubborn friends who won't accept that the name changed 3 years ago, but that won't change the fact that it did.

You're right. Texas fan will already have written off the season after yet another loss to OU.

When was the last time Aggy beat a top 5 team on the road??? Aggy football it's frantastic. I think this is about UT-aggy, why bring in OU on this topic. :lol

Why not? It was relevant to the discussion.

We'll see if that was a top 5 team in another month or so.

In 1998 they beat #2 Kansas State in the Big 12 Championship game in OT in St. Louis, I believe.

hey im sure any program with their history and tradition, who's always a darkhorse to win the big 12, would let a texas st. qb throw for 400 yds

You are right, but I was thinking maybe Frantastic had a few of these wins. :lol

Well I haven't been in to comment on the game since all of this hurricane stuff has had me tied but but seeing as she's about to make landfall, I thought I would come in and give a few comments.

One of my friends at work has a son that plays for Texas State so in wanting him to do well for her sake, I really didn't think a pummeling would be all that exciting. But I must admit I wasn't prepared for the Bobcats to make a run like they did. The whole "Aggies found out they were playing Thursday on Wednesday" sounds like and excuse but I do think it's a little significant. I can't shake the nagging thought that if it was t.u. or TT playing that the game would have been rescheduled for a later date like all of the other football games were.

On the game itself...just one thing....I miss the Wrecking Crew dearly. :depressed

BTW Joe, exactly how did you do in College Station? Did you check out midnight yell and the DC? Any encounters with some Ags? Give us the scoop!

I know everyone's going to blame this one on the secondary. I guess that's partly true, they're young and still make some mistakes. But it's really more the fault of Torbush (our DC) for having them give a 5-10 yard cushion on coverage. You also have to blame the D-line. This was a D-line that was hyped up to be really good and they got NO pressure at all on the quarterback. SWT's line can't be that good. Not to take anything away from them, they played great. But a DI-AA team doesn't have the athletes or the size to compete with a real defense the way it's supposed to be playing.

They shoulda sung the aggy fight song harder, cuz that no name quarterback made them look like "busters"

I agree...They have a great team and they played well while A&M did not. IT was closer than the score indeed.
I am just happy we do not have to play them! (And no, I am not joking...Maine gave us a run at the OZ and they stink as a 1AA school).

For those waiting to jump on this one and on the "Huskers Suck" wagon, just remember that we still have to recruit for the huge program change. The D is still fine tuned but getting worn out by the O's inability. We will be back at the top in 3-4 yrs or Callahan will be history.

Overall it was a hell of a night.

The Aggie athletic admin was pretty cool. SID's real nice and helpful. The view from the press box, as well as when the damn thing moves was great. Seeing 12,000 towels waving in near unison before the game was something that's great to see in person.

In the second quarter, I went down to the field to see if our photogs got one of our touchdowns (he did) and was just so amazed that I had to stay down the rest of the game.

I talked to a few of the yell leaders and they said we were making them work harder than expected and that they were impressed with what they had seen from the team and our small contingent of fans.

Some of the corps guys were dicks (I was the only one in our group that wore anything with State on it. It was a white polo with the athletics style-Texas State logo, different than what anybody else on the field and with the team was wearing).

A few intentionally got in the way of our shots (in the fourth quarter, I started taking pictures) and one freaked out as we were trying to set up for a good angle while within five feet of the dog. I thought we should have stopped for a dog whistle and just wreaked some havoc throughout, but we didn't do it.

As far as my view of the Aggie fans, I applaud their tradition and spirit to no bounds. Very few Aggie fans during the game gave me any shit and were very cool - especially these four Delta Zeta girls at the corner of the end zone.

We didn't get to yell practice or anything since they switched the game so close (and I had classes Thursday morning), so we got to the game about 2-3 hours before kickoff.

Ate at Dixie Chicken. Damn great double meat/double cheese/bacon burger. The fries were so-so. Got some good natured smack from the Ags fans, but nothing harsh - even gave some out.

We wanted to stay around, but our sports editor had class Friday morning and we hadn't talked to the SIDs assistant (Thanks, Jeanne) about getting us some shelter for the night. We probably would have whooped it up the whole night as College Station treated us great.

I just wish I could cover a full-blown, stands full game there soon so I can see it in all its Aggie glory.

Good show, College Station.

Yeah, CS is great. Some of the Corps guys are peckerheads, but they exist on every campus. Still, the student body here is probably the best behaved overall that I have seen on any campus, mine included.

Dixie Chicken is great. Next time you are here, check out the Chicken Oil Co. Same ownership, good food, more mellow crowd.

As for RAZZING...I am going at it as a HUSKER OF ONE for the next 13.5 months, before my BIG RED rolls in here on 11/11/06. It's going to be a great day for me and a sad day for Aggieland!
