Shit take. He's one of the best in the NBA. Yes, he roots for the Spurs. But he, unlike the abominable Clyde, is honest about calls and never favors the Spurs when it comes to the refs.

I don't even want to talk about Bonner. But, yeah. If the Rockets had cut the lead to 6-8 at the end, they could have carried it into their next matchup. You don't want to give a team reason to believe. That first matchup was just a bad game by the Spurs, and it was razor close. This game they played well and blew them out. Yea I agree. Though I understand Pop is very slow to incorporate Boban bc the big rotation is full. You can't sit LMA/Diaw/West, they are all scoring and passing and doing so much for us and were playing so well. You could sit Tim... and Pop did but that was only bc Tim was having a bad game, not really to sub Boban in. I guess that was my disappointment, I wanted to see Boban outside of garbage time a few minutes. We won the game, so Pop was correct with what he did.
I also wanted to see Slow-Mo outside of garbage time, and maybe that is just me, but he had played some good games and on the opposite end, Simmons is only showing up for garbage time. Not just this game, but against the T-wolves, only 2 mins, got blocked twice. Messina played Kyle that game. Pop didn't give him a chance until it was garbage time. Kind of disappointed about that... but what can you do?

Yeah that 2011 team was all fool's gold while this current roster can still get better. Pretty exciting to think about.

That's the image you want to leave Houston with.
Pretty true, but that assessment is such an unbelievable paradox with Tony not playing well, Timmy going o-fer, and Manu having pretty minimal impact. That would have been impossible for so many years that it seems almost like heresy to say it. Say hello to the future, Spurs fans.

Nice to have a bench that can kick ass, too. One of the things that all the Spurs Championship teams had was guys who could step up for 15-20 on any given night, when the team needed it. This team is loaded with guys like that.

No... I've never seen any team start a season like this. I've seen the Spurs have great games but the totality of what they are doing is pretty intense and intimidating.
Not because I'm a fan, but the Spurs without trying were sometimes more impressive with less material.
I'm not talking specifically about the start of a season, just the level of the team.
GS is very impressive, but VERY FAR from the most impressive teams of the last decade for example. They still haven't been challenged, not their fault, but between injuries, and rebuilding teams...
My point is they are a bit overated depite being great.

Absolutely. Another poster noted that Houston plays its big guns until the very dregs of the game, while we rotated through our entire bench, and they all played at least okay. Simmons seems to be regressing a little, but I am sure he will bounce back at some point.

Pop refuses to play Boban/Kyle against legit teams unless it's out of desperation.
Boris needs to start getting some consideration as a dark horse 6th man candidate. He's been great this year. So clever. Folks forget, before there was a Draymond Green their was a Boris Diaw.
West is starting to grow on me. I loved those hard fouls on Howard who is still such a child some times. Helps that his elbow shot is starting to fall too.
Danny! Excited for this shooting performance tonight. It was only a matter of time.
LMA, wow! Put the overrated Cappella in his place. Full Beast mode tonight.
Leonard doing Leonard things. It's been a joy to watch him grow year after year, but this one the most. I've never seen anything like it since I started watching hoops.
All this with the Big three having minimal point production (10 total).

Frankly, I expected Simms to get more run this season, simply because he's a natural SG, and would eat Manu's minutes when he rests or Manu has his annual injury (knock on wood). Kyle is more of a Kawhi replacement, who is younger, can play more minutes and function better even if banged up...

That is the state of how stacked we are.
I think both guys could play for other teams regular rotations, and more so Boban. Kyle is still a developing player, though he's going to come along more slowly now if he's not playing against tough competition.
I think at this point Kyle's probably been ruled out of any possible playoff situation, bc if you had planned to use him in those cases, you need to give him experience against tougher teams. That is not happening right now. I don't count garbage time as quality experience.
Boban is kind of in the same situation as it respects to quality competition. He's been awesome in garbage time, and against weaker teams, but Pop not playing him in real minutes against a better team will not really get him to play in the playoffs.
At this point, yea it will have to come to an "act of desperation." I could see it happening more with Boban bc he brings some really valuable skills, but I have my mindset adjusted to not be so whiny about it.

Simmons is still a rookie. An old rookie, but a rookie just the same. I think you have to expect him to take two steps forward and one step back. The fact that Pop continues to force-feed him minutes speaks volumes, IMO. Even in garbage time. Pop has made a lot of guys in similar situations disappear.

I actually (despite Steele's schtick with me --which I am going to blow off, can't take that guy seriously at all) thought this was the kind of game Simmons would shine on. His real strength is transition scoring. He's frankly awesome at that, so I was disappointed he was so poor to start.
He also wasn't very good against the T-wolves getting blocked twice at the rim and playing only 2 minutes, so it was the second game in a row that he played real minutes and made bad decisions in a half court offense. It could be a function of him being so predictable in what he wants to do, or maybe he just needs to take that open shot when its there.
I am sure Pop will give him more chances, but garbage time dunks ain't the same thing as playing when the game is on the line, so at some point the novelty of that fades for me.
I also wanted to see Boban here outside of garbage time.

I don't think Pop can afford to make him disappear, and he has talent.
He wasn't terrible either, TBH I don't want to exaggerate. Maybe he didn't even need to be pulled and could have played through mistakes, but since it was such a close game, I get it.

Absolutely. It's just that the Spurs as constructed will have more free minutes at SG than SF, and so it makes sense that the natural SG would get more minutes to develop. I think Pop would've loved to go with a more seasoned veteran too, but we just didn't have the money. With that in mind, I think Simms has done relatively well, despite the obvious 1st season jitters.

Good analysis of the game. Kawhi was awesome. I agree with you on Boris, 6th MoY. He has come in changing the dynamic of games already for a few string of games in a row. He's so important to what we do as a team and in that bench. If you are stuck in half court offense, just give the ball to Bobo. Open court, get Manu.

And I think Steve Kerr was then enlightened by Boris in the great advantage of a forward playmaker.

Frankly, I take it as more evidence that we need to split LMA and Timmy. I don't think it is a coincidence that LMA played his most assertive game as a Spur when Tim was barely on the court. A big part of the difficulty in integrating LMA into our team is his tendency to defer to Tim. But when LMA is on the floor with Boris or DWest he isn't compelled to defer to them. So we get to see the LMAlpha that many on ST expected.

It's a schtick when you compare Simmons to "not being a top 5 pick", then hold Anderson to being a "first round pick" with some sort of underlying implication that he was a high draft pick. He was one selection away from a second round pick. Some 30th round picks don't play in the NBA, much less in their first year, much less for a contender, much less get extended to longer contracts by that top contending team...
SAgal's perception of KA is far more in line with reality than your own.
That being said, she's being a little over critical of Simms, too. Other than driving into a packed lane with no plan a little too much, opening up offensive foul/turnover situations, and missing an open jumper, and learning some defense, he's still doing relatively well for a guy 30 games in to his rookie season. Good on him.
