Before anyone burns on the authors having an agenda, he was not and is not anti gamer.
Check this!:

Douglas Gentile (http://www.psychology.iastate.edu/directory/faculty/gentile-douglas/), a psychologist at Iowa State University, has been studying the subject for decades.

"The first study I began in 1999, to basically try to show video game addiction isn't a real thing, and it turns out I was wrong!" he told CNN.

Some notables:
Access is the key. Cannot get addicted to something you have no access to.

The ABCs. "The A Is Autonomy, we like to feel we're in control. B is Belonging, we like to feel connected to other people. And the C is Competence, we like to feel that we're good at what we do," he says

You can basically be addicted to anything.

No research plan needed for that conclusion..

I love playing video games, but it's more so of the compliment to my weed smoking. Which is definitely addicting IMO.

Yeah...people can get addicted to lots of things. It's just a matter of some being more harmful than others. I've gone through phases where I've become addicted to something and neglected more necessary things. For a while, I was a total audiophile. It got to the point where I was spending money on the best headphones or speakers. And I'd sit and listen to anything. Even if I didn't like the music. Just getting drawn in to the sounds.

The fuck son, weed isn't addictive. It's super easy to quit, unlike say, tobacco or heroin.

Excellent. Can you tell me which headphones are the best quality for the buck and which ones are hype?

I can't go a day without music. And can't go a week without sex. And can't go a month without reading a book. And if I miss a workout it bugs the hell out of me.

Love those addictions.

I do play TECMO BOWL*** (have all three) but am now at the point of never losing a game so..........

I have a phobia that something might have got by me when it comes to my interests.

*** When I play with the Steelers, Rod Woodson always runs back a KO in every game.

It's really dependent on your budget. I've found something decent in every price range. If money is no object, you'll want to get a pair of Beats Studio. But there are other decent options for less. SkullCandy makes some tremendous sound out of their products. But don't ever listen to Beats if you're not able to buy them. You'll never be happy with anything else.

Weed is very addictive in my book. It isn't gonna make me sick or wanna go rob my Aunt's house, but I definitely crave that shit.

I smoked for a long ass time....and I do mean a long ass time. (13-14 years) When I finally did quit around 2 years ago I definitely craved it. Probably took 2 months before I didn't think about it every single day.

I was addicted...no doubt about it.

And I agree with your other post.

I didn't go into full Bob Saget "I used to suck dick for coke" mode when I quit, or steal and sell my grandmother's car for money to buy coke. (True story...had a buddy do this to his grandmother)

Started smoking pot at around 15, it was everywhere back in the 60's. Actually got bored with it and just stopped, no big deal at all.

My brother in law Doug grows the (medical) stuff, has an actual farm. He's asked me if I want a bag more than once, I always...nay! I will take a hit if a joint is being passed round, the old fit in thing.

In the history of the world there has never being anything so...nothing...that became such a big deal.

Video game addiction is definitely a thing with the online crowd... CoD, MMOs, etc. I've played games my entire life, but rarely get online any more. I see video games as just another entertainment medium, so I look for the same things in them that I do in a good movie or book.

Some people just have addictive personalities though, can't do anything in moderation.

While I do believe you can get addicted to gaming..it works differently than your normal addiction to things.

I feel like you can stop yourself at any point. You are really in control when you pick up a controller unlike say a cig where it's almost impossible to say no to dat nicotine.

When I was 14-16 I played games non-stop but always felt OK letting it go by the end of the day.

I used to wake up at 9AM, turn on my Sega Dreamcast and put Shenmue on. Played that shit for a whole day. :lol

Good times.

Nowadays you have to beg me to play a game. Sad because I still love gaming. Just dont have the time or desire to do it.

video game addiction is lame it is time consuming and it erodes your brain gradually but still it's not nearly as bad as being addicted to sex imho, it's safer and less expensive. I mean, apart from time the only investment you need is several hundred bucks that a computer/laptop costs, and it wouldn't get you infected with STD or shits as a pussy would.

Halo 2 and 3. That was the bees knees right there.

People at work are really addicted to Clash of Clans, I lasted 2 weeks on that game and realized it would be a time vacuum.

You play strategic games, that's why your chimp ass is so smart.

What are you playing now? Civilazation 3? Or that war game?

Hearts of Iron imho. I took control of nationalist china and in a few years I could manage to retain all our lost terrorities from the Japanese faggots, who requested white peace time and time again but I declined it each and every time (with difficulty level set to the easiest though). In the end I would destroy all their troops on the mainland as well as the Korean peninsula.

I may be smart thanks but I don't think it has as much to do with strategic games as it does with my abstinence from sex, tbh. Celibacy is the secret to a good brain as well as a long life, and it is also the only possible elixir if there really exists such a thing.

False.

Although weed isn't physically addicting it is very mentally addicting.

I agree. There is mentally addicting aspects of smoking pot that have an effect on you physically though.

My brother used to smoke a lot, and when I say alot I mean all day everyday. It got to the point where he couldnt eat unless he was high. He wouldn't have an appetite without being high. He ended up losing alot of weight because of this. Not to mention he was a complete **** when he wasnt high.

Xevious

Well weed does stimulate your appetite, so if you smoke that much it's understandable that you'd lose your appetite when sober. But weed is no more addictive than chocolate.

anything that serves as an escape from the dull assignments and raw work of life can be addicting. it's a time out to ease yourself.
