SAN ANTONIO – David West (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3721/) pinches his index finger and thumb together, leaving the slightest sliver of space between them. Small, he’s telling you. The smallest he’s ever been handed in basketball. “The scouting reports are like this,” West told Yahoo Sports.

For everything he had suspected would await him upon surrendering $11 million to come to San Antonio, West had never fully understood the Spurs’ immersion into the Spurs. The dynasty’s genius is born of its simplicity, driven out of a relentless self-examination. The Spurs have transformed themselves again – bigger, stronger and once more the NBA’s dominant defensive team.

So, the Spurs beat the Cleveland Cavaliers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/cle/) 99-95 on Thursday night and finally meet Golden State on Jan. 25 for the first time this season. “In any other season in the past decade, we would be in the lead,” Manu Ginobili (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3380/) said.

I just saw this and came to see if there was already a link here. A nice read! Nice quotes from West.

Captain West :worthy: He was big last night during the 1st half and start of the 4th. Imagine if that was Baynes playing those minutes. How things change within months.

I'm amazed at how little the Spurs gameplan the teams they face. Of course they play nearly every other night, but it's still remarkable. Process, process, process.

People in the comments are saying the Spurs are already peaking while the Warriors haven't hit their stride yet, and that they would totally destroy us once they reach their ceiling. :lol

Great read, and thanks.

All the time spent by fans, analyzing and worrying about opponents. And: “One of the biggest adjustments for me has been the lack of focus on other teams,” West told Yahoo Sports. “It’s all about this group, and what we’re doing every day. Maybe we spend three minutes on who we’re playing that night. … We watch a few clips. Here, you just realize that it’s not really about anybody but us.”

All the time fans spend melting down after a loss, or acting like a particular win proves something. And: "There’s an ideology that exists here. You just trust it. Whether it’s a good win, a tough loss, you just understand there’s a method to everything."

All the time fans spend speculating and bitching about guys sitting out games. And: "There are nights where Tim is going to sit. Manu is going to sit. Maybe we don’t see it right then, but you realize it was the right thing to do. A couple days after, guys are fresh."

What was interesting was how little preparation they are doing against their opponent. I guess they just play within the system regardless of opponent. Which says how dominating the team is, they do the same thing no matter who they play!!

Good read. Thanks. :toast

They probably don't seriously scout an opponent until the post season.

Great quote:

“The fact is, the history is there,” West told Yahoo Sports. “You’re not going to question it. You’ve got guys like Tim, who is basically a coach. You’ve got Manu, who is basically a coach. Tony is basically a coach. They know this stuff. They know this system. They know Pop. We lean on those guys first. Then we just look to them for direction.
