I thought Elba did good, more deserving than Damon even though the Martian was a far better movie.

AlexJones

Bryan Cranston is a joke nomination too.

mingus
01-16-2016, 07:42 PM
The Martian was nominated for Best Picture? I thought it was a good movie, with good acting and great cinematography, but the story wasn't that captivating imo. Damon's a good actor, but he wasn't a good fit in the role IMO. He doesn't have the charisma of say a Tom Hanks in Cast Away, where he can carry a scene talking to himself.

Bridge of Spies was another movie I saw, and while good, I thought it was too boring. It's a quality Spielberg movie, the acting was great, directing & photography great, but there wasn't a whole lot of character development in it other than Hanks. He basically carried the whole movie by himself. The story was good, and probably historically accurate. It'll appeal to the historians out there. But aside from Hanks, and to a certain degree, the Russian spy, there was nothing Oscar-worthy about it.

I havent seen The Revenant yet, but two other movies I saw this past year were Steve Jobs (or is it just called "Jobs"?) & Mad Max: Fury Road. I thought both were extremely good and deserve to be up there.

No black people??!! Well it must be cause everyone's racist.... fuckers need to shut up and act better. I watched all 4 of those movies and no one really has an oscar worthy performance. The only way I'd put one in is switching Cranston with Elba and that's it. Either way none of those two would win it... scratch that, I'd nominate Sam L Jackson as the only black guy. For me he was way better than any of those 4.

Only two or three were honest to goodness snubs.

Just as many or more non-blacks miss out every year who are just as deserving.

I thought Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler was last year's biggest snub.
I think Tom Hardy for The Revanent is this year's biggest snub.

And I've seen Creed, Concussion, Straight Outta Compton, Selma...

As for Idris Elba, name me the last non-cinema film that was nominated for an Oscar? His nomination was done wrong by the medium, and, specifically, the first-to-streaming offering of Beasts Of No Nation.

Will Smith being nominated would have felt token. It wasn't that strong a role.

If Foxx or Ojiofor wanted to, I'd bet they could get nominated every year the way Denzel or Freeman used to. But each is cashing in and, specifically, Foxx hasn't had a challenging role in a decade.

WTF is wrong with all of you race baiters?

There are only 20 nominees. Five each of four categories. Whites make up 5/6th the lead actors and actresses in Hollywood. It can be statistically normal in a colorblind society that blacks, which are only part of the 1/6th do not get nominated.

http://www.bunchecenter.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/2015-Hollywood-Diversity-Report-2-25-15.pdf

Besides the assumption that there are only two races, I agree with this. It makes me sick that people are falling over themselves talking about the "opportunities" for black nominations wasted. Like there is supposed to be a special minority slot. One of the most demeaning things is to have your success qualified because of your demographics. I bet none of those guys want to be nominated just because they were "the best of the black guys."

Affirmative action was supposed to be a forced, temporary measure, not a standard for how we view fairness in the world.

But give me a break with this "them" shit. It wasn't like the actors came up and complained about no blacks getting nominated. To group the actors with the commentators is like grouping athletes with ESPN talking heads. Just stupid. And that's with me ignoring the probable implication that "them" means blacks in general, which would just be sniveling, beta shit.

Did you really think this was a good retort? In context of this conversation, she is a commentator, one with a very obvious bias. You're literally suggesting never nominating MBJ or IE or any of the other supposed snubs ever again because of what another person said. Do you realize how stupid that sounds? At worst, she's sour-graping for her husband, like Welker's wife did a few years ago for Wes. Or Klay's father does repeatedly. What does that have to do with the rest of the group? Do you think JPS would have been happy if another black actor had been nominated? No. She was just pissed about her husband.

Obviously you took what I said about giving them the Dicaprio comment seriously.

It was a remark not meant to be serious. Half joking if you will.

The point I was making is that they percieve almost everything as a slight.

Do you think that for a second, this was racially motiviated? That they were snubbed because they were black? That's their thinking and why they're boycotting.

I doubt JPS feels her husband wasn't snubbed because of his race. He's been nominated for Oscars twice and lost to black men twice. I doubt even the staunchest race-baiters truly believe that white men would have been nominated for those roles. It's like assuming Rush believes everything he says. It's at best sociopolitical trash-talk. You have some extremist like Lee who think they can raise awareness or something, but that's it. Most black people don't care about which rich guy gets what award. It's such a one-percent problem.

I read in Gregory Peck's autobiography that when he was the pres of AMPAS in the 50's or 60's, he cleaned out the membership rolls and jettisoned members who had been around since the 20's and weren't active in their fields anymore. "I never used to go anyway," he said. "You can't boycott something that you never used to go to anyway."

"I look at it like a horse race. Once your horse loses the race, you tear up your ticket and back on out," he said of the Oscar nominations.

"We don't do movies for the industry. We do movies for the fans, for the people. And the industry, you know, if they give you a trophy or not or pat you on the back or not, it's nice but its not something that you should dwell on," he said. "We got accolades from all levels, from our core fans to our curious fans, from people who didn't even think they wanted to see that movie. I think an older generation got an understanding on why we did that kind of music and the younger generation got a history lesson, and we got so much praise for the movie."
He added, "How could you be mad because one other academy or guild or whatever didn't say [we're] No. 1 … It's crying about not having enough icing on your cake."

The veteran producer said he at least had some sympathy for Will Smith, because he gave a worthy performance in Concussion.

"But even then it is not like he has been ignored or overlooked in the past. I understand his disappointment but see no prejudice or racism in his not making it. Who knows, maybe he lost by one vote," said Molen. "I say to all my co-members: Stop acting like spoiled brats. Look to the next awards show for recognition — if you deserve it."

And herein lies the problem....this old fart dirt bag thought Bridge of Spies was "masterful" as he pit it...while I thought it was a piece of shit....that's the whole point of Spike Lee's diversity argument....was this old dirty looking fucker sitting at home playing with his old shriveled up hairy small hairy white balls when he got the revelation that Bridges if Spies was masterful :lmao

And to his own idiotic point....yes we don't know how many votes Concussion lost by or the voting criteria other than him maybe playing with his balls and getting all nolostalgic over the 50's....hence the need for greater diversity and TRANSPARENCY.....

This is nothing but racism through and through and Spike Lee live him or hate him nailed the shit this time....For this old fucker to think his close friends film was masterful while the job Will did as a solo act alone gets no credit would be downright laughable if not so shameful....

These morons are disgusting tbh

My nigga George Clooney lays down the fucking hammer :lmao

“If you think back 10 years ago, the Academy was doing a better job. Think about how many more African Americans were nominated. I would also make the argument, I don’t think it’s a problem of who you’re picking as much as it is: How many options are available to minorities in film, particularly in quality films?

I think we have a lot of points we need to come to terms with. I find it amazing that we’re an industry that in the 1930s, most of our leads were women. And now a woman over 40 has a very difficult time being a lead in a movie. We’re seeing some movement. Jennifer Lawrence and Patricia Arquette have made the loud pronouncement about wage disparity, have put a stamp on the idea that we got to pay attention. But we should have been paying attention long before this. I think that African Americans have a real fair point that the industry isn’t representing them well enough. I think that’s absolutely true.”

Take a look at what else Clooney had to say about black directors:
Clooney goes on to say that there have been numerous of black directors and actors who should have been nominated in the past.

Let’s look back at some of the nominees. I think around 2004, certainly there were black nominees — like Don Cheadle, Morgan Freeman. And all of a sudden, you feel like we’re moving in the wrong direction. There were nominations left off the table. There were four films this year: “Creed” could have gotten nominations; “Concussion” could have gotten Will Smith a nomination; Idris Elba could have been nominated for “Beasts of No Nation;” and “Straight Outta Compton” could have been nominated. And certainly last year, with “Selma” director Ava DuVernay — I think that it’s just ridiculous not to nominate her.

Well he faked an accent so he's basically running on fumes now. Jamie gets one just by doing his normal on state routine of Ray but Will Smith is going to have to wear a wig and a dress to get one, you watch.

Has anyone tried this yet?

There are four categories for actors and actresses. Each has five nominees. Whites make up 5/6th of the star billings of actors and actresses.

Take five dice. The one represents a minority, and two through six represents a white. Roll all five dice at once. If we assume the acting ability and those nomination them are equal and colorblind, then this random result can show what can happen.

From rolling five dice at once, the possibility of not getting a one showing on any of the five is 40%.

Go on people, find you five dice and have fun.

Have you rolled the dice yet?

Pick the six or other number for minorities. It doesn't have to be the one. Use five 10 sided dice if you wish one of the numbers to represent a black rather than a minority. This makes the odds of a not being nominated in a category at 59% rather than the 40% for a minority. Blacks only make up 10% of the actors and actresses. Diversity of awards should be looked at by Hollywood's demographics, not national demographics. For the 20 nominees total, if actors and actresses were selected totally by random, the statistical odds would be 12.2% that none of the 20 nominees are black.

Go ahead. Roll the dice.

We should have a sit-down with the Academy, but we should also have a sit-down with the film studios because we’re not getting the budgets that we need to get that kind of consideration. Look, 'The Revenant' was made for a lot of money. The bear alone was $100 million. And I’m sure the Oscars are going, 'What are you angry about? The black bear was awesome in 'The Revenant!'

DuVernay is a relative newcomer in the filmmaking world -- her first feature, "I Will Follow (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1624426/)," came out just five years ago -- it also points to a larger diversity issue.

"Here's the deal: Most of us in the film community, across the board, work with people who we know, who we consider friends and family. If you use that as a barometer to look at the film world, it just shows you how segregated, xenophobic, sexist, racist and backwards we are as Americans in terms of how we deal with one another," cinematographer Bradford Young, another snubbed member of Team "Selma," (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/05/bradford-young-selma_n_6419254.html) told The Huffington Post in an interview earlier this year. "I'm not throwing anybody under the bus for hiring who they hire, but if we're honest with ourselves -- for whatever it's worth for the person who could actually admit it to themselves -- we have a lot of work to do. If film sets are representations of the American public as a whole, which they're supposed to be, then film crews haven't moved out of the era that we see Martin Luther King fighting in during 'Selma.'"

If white people are the overwhelming majority of an entire industry, and the awards created to honor that industry are decided on mainly by white people, how could anyone say this is a level playing field? "This is not me being humble," DuVernay told Entertainment Weekly when she predicted she'd be shut out of the nominations. Rather, she said, she was just looking at the surroundings.

"The question is: Why was 'Selma' the only film that was even in the running with people of color for the award? You know what I mean? I mean, why are there not -- not just black, brown people? You know what I mean? Asian people, indigenous people, representations that are more than just one voice, just one face, just one gaze?" DuVernay said (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/28/ava-duvernay-selma-oscar-snub_n_6565238.html) during an interview on "Democracy Now!" after the Oscar nominations were announced. "So, for me, it’s much less about the awards and the accolades, because, literally, next year no one cares. Right? I can’t even tell you who won the award for whatever three years ago. I don’t know."

I mean, I agree that people need to not have the double-standard. But those are horrible counter-arguments. The race competitors are chosen by objective means, while the ASG is picked by the world at large. The Oscars are chosen by an oligarchy. The equivalent counter to the Oscars would be the ASG bench. And the counter to the race would be some intelligence competition that isn't necessarily going to be all PC in its pool of competitors.
