Uh. I think they are all, like, dead, except for Ford maybe. Oh and all their pictures are painted.

It might not be the answer that you're looking for, but I'm pretty sure that each assumed office from a president who either died or resigned and failed to win re-election.

That at least would explain why you didn't include, say, LBJ.

They were all vice presidents sworn in after the President died in office.

Harrison died, Tyler was sworn in.
Taylor died, Fillmore was sworn in.
Johnson got in with Lincolns assassination.
Ford for Kennedy's assassination.
Arthur for Garfield's assassination.

FWD is correct. All five initially were Vice President and ascended to the presidency via a vacany (death or resignation) but failed to ever be elected as president on their own.

There were other VPs who assumed office that went on to win on their own, i.e. Teddy Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry Truman and LBJ

Actually Ford was sworn in after Nixon resigned. LBJ followed JFK.

I believe only Hayes, Harrison, and Bush failed to win a plurality of the popular vote and the electoral votes.

Yes, the three lost the popular vote but controlled the electoral college thus winning the election.

"President Al Gore"

These guys would have ended up in the history books if there were no electoral college.

They were the only men to be elected president while they were bachelors.

Buchanan never married and Cleveland married a 21 year old while he was in the White House. Not sure if she was an intern or not before that.
