I heard somebody mention this place today and it took me back to my youth.

Or was this store a mid-west thing..I grew up in Ohio.

Just wondering. I used to get my albums and Jovan Musk there.

We didn't have that particular store, but our five and dime was SS Kresge or something like that--pre K-Mart, if I recall correctly. I mean I think they grew into the K-Mart chain. Ours was located in the old part of downtown, and by the time I started having disposable income (allowance), I was more interested in the mall! I guess they were pretty popular at one time.

Thanks, 2Blonde! I think this is the one I had in my hometown, but we are going way back now! I just remember it was OLD when I was a kid, but I will never forget the creaky wooden floors.

I remember BEST! It was so weird how you "ordered" your stuff. I never quite understood their concept. Guess no one else did, either. :lol

I just looked at your profile. You're younger than me. :lmao So please don't call yourself old.

I NEVER call myself old--the store was old when I was a kid! People in their 50's and 60's are so young still--when you get to be our age!

The best is yet to come! :elephant

I remember them too! Wasn't Service Merchandise the same idea? And then there was Gemco, but that may have been a CA store only.

We had Woolco and Woolworths in Phoenix too.

And before it was BEST, it was LaBelle's in Phoenix - same concept .. going into the store but ordering it. Weird system.

Shelly

It was a weird system. And I think atBEST, there were some items that you didn't have to fill out that stupid form for.

How exciting it was to see your purchase come down that ramp!

They took a 15 minute shopping experience and turned it into an hour :lol

Holy cow! Service Merchandise (http://store.yahoo.com/yhst-5194590550830/) is still around!

Now that I think about it, Circuit City does much the same thing except the salesman fills out the form for you.

But they have electronics--usually high-ticket items. BEST made you wait for things like ink pens and staplers! :lol

The Woolco picture looks very much like the shopping center on old hwy 90 and Gen. McMullen. There even seems to be a street divider on the right part of the pic. However the picture was taken in Des Moines.

Burger Chef, Burger Queen (before BK), Krystal, Big Boy (Shoney's, Bob's or Frisch's).

When I first played little league baseball in 1970. I played for United Grocery. That was in Burkburnett TX. We beat Piggly Wiggly for the championship. Our parents called it the Grocer's Battle. Heck, we just played ball as kids, and wondered why the workers in the store did not bow to us when we came in to get an ICEE. I thought we were stars!

I remember GC Murphy's and also Murphy's Mart (same company). Also McCrory's.

I also used to go to:

Ben Franklin, Kresge's, T, G & Y (thanks for reminding me KEDA!), Woolworths.

As kid's we didn't call them variety stores...we would simply say:

"Mom, I going up to the dime store!"
