View Full Version : Simmons deferring too much?

Simmons game is largely athleticism, yes. But it's wrong to say this guy has no BBIQ. He has demonstrated it plenty of times on O and D. His from behind block last night was nails! Also done some bonehead moves? Yes.
I'm starting to see him overthink too often. Whereas before he was just go go and maybe did need to size up the situation a little bit better, now I see him thinking where he should have just done his Go Go athleticism. Or he waits, the opening is not there and he forces it anyways.
If he can find a happy medium I think the guy has great potential. Again, keep Defense in the conversation, not just O.

He shows flashes. That is the important part. Now he just has to get time playing and learn to control himself. I'm not saying he can be Manu, but he can be serviceable.

Simmons is deferring too much, and Green is dribbling too much

Manu, yes.
Not 100% Manu, not realistically attainable.
But if he can learn some Manu type stuff, combining athletic with brains, watch out.

When he does dribble to the basket, he'll turn it over 60% of the time.

I think you meant to say Parker is dribbling too much

Hell yeah he's deferring too much.
And I'd rather we get our asses kicked because Simmons couldn't make difficult shots than because our star players couldn't do ANYTHING.

For sure. He isn't comfortable taking the reigns..... But it's needed these days. We don't have a player who can get easy shots besides him and Parker (when his legs have the juice).
Hard to be a contender in this league without getting easy buckets here and there.

OP is concerned about Simms, but he said that Kawhi's "Kobe type" and "has been worried about his dome since witnessing his disgusting MeBall game vs the Lakers" when Kawhi was playing aggressively and drawing fouls in the game.
So it's fine if Simms stop deferring and stay aggressive but it's bad when Kawhi does it...Nice. :tu

I have said this before but he's not deferring. He's limited by his skillset, his ballhandling, and limited moves, confidence in his shooting etc. He's aggressive in transition where he's a beast... but he's not the best PnR player bc his ballhandling is very shaky. He's a good cutter, but you need good passers to set him up. Kawhi and him play really well together, bc Kawhi draws so much attention, that Simmons is left open for cutting lanes etc.
He's a roleplayer, won't save us if the other guys don't show up.

I've noticed deferring way too much since before the All Star break. Green is shooting way too much and Parker dribbles too much. The best part of Simmons' game is his aggression. When he takes it strong to the hoop he either gets an easy basket or is gonna go to the free throw line. There is no point of him being on the floor if he's not gonna be aggressive on the offensive end.

Fortunately others prior to you also underestimated/did not see Simmons skill set.
One of them was named RC Buford:
"There's a lot of places along the way where a guy in Jonathon's shoes could have fallen off the path," Buford said. "But he believed in himself. I think the coaches in Austin probably recognized it sooner than we did. Ken McDonald, Earl Watson, those guys were speaking about Jonathon in ways that none of us believed initially, a year and a half ago. But he kept playing. He kept fighting. The guys in Austin started making us pay attention 15 games into the D-League season a year ago. They really kept hounding us, [saying], 'He's making progress. He's getting things done. He's got a different level of athleticism.'
Pop, and certainly Buford are now onboard. Pop believes Simmons can be a long time player in the NBA. How good of one remains to be seen.
Defense, you know the other side of the ball where Anderson just got worked* by TOSB Kobe Bryant?
Here is Simmons self view: "I've always been able to play defense," he said. "I think defense is just effort. You don't have to have a lot of skill to play defense. It's just effort. So I just tried to bring it on defense, and sharpen up my tools on offense. Raw, I've heard that so many times about my skills. But I'm just not scared of a challenge. I'm not scared of somebody telling me, 'Hey, you can't guard him.' I've been told stuff like that my whole life. It just goes in one ear and out the other.
*Hopefully Anderson will improve his D. He seems limited by his physical set.
Simmons also has 4 daughters (four) and had them all before he was a junior in college. Was/is very concerned about providing for them. This absolutey effects his play. Lets hope as gains confidence, $$$ and playing time that he will only get better.
If I could edit the thread I would replace "defers" with "overthinks".
Parker does absolutely zero to help him get involved in the game, seems intentional. He's left trying to scrap it out on his own.

That describes damn near every Spur regarding Parker helping. While Parker has been much better this year in general (he could only improve from last year), against the Lakers and Clippers he went right back to his same old shit. Kobe the 2nd. Ya, we won vs The Marketers. Big deal :lol against the purposely tanking Lakers with pathetic attention whore Kobe Kardashian. Parker a huge reason while the Lakers kept it close.
Simmons played great against the Lakers imo. Showed great versatility. Long shots, short, medium and good D.

This
Parker is so selfish passes the at the very very very last moment killing fluidity he has nothing on CP3 and Rondo interms of passing the ball tbh

Simmons will be ok. It just might not be this year. It could be if he keeps getting all this experience though.
I hope he puts in work this offseason

He needs to work of defense and aggressiveness/assertiveness and he should be a very solid player. The talent and skill are there.

Thanks for sharing that. He's definitely a hard worker who has gotten better already right b4 our eyes. My comment was limited to my opinion that I don't think he's deferring (might be wrong bc it is after all an opinion.)
