Don't see it happening. He'll get Ray M type minutes during the RS, but Pop won't waver too much from what he's being doing all season. I don't expect Miller to play any significant role come PO time.

Who's minutes is he going to take? Parker's? Mills'? I can't see why Pop would want to deviate from what he's been doing all season, especially now this late in the season.

Maybe McCallum's minutes? :-\

Spurs already got Anderson that's coming into good form facilitating the offense. Manu also hasn't come back into the court.

All I can see is that Simmons had a lot of trouble covering a crafty guard like Chris Paul, so maybe Miller can help out.

As I said in a previous post, I expect Miller to play the RM role. And, no, Miller is now Chris Paul stopper. The Spurs will keep doing what they've always be doing with Paul.

Since when do spurs regularly do a 2PG offense? Seems like his role would be negligible if that is the case.

The depth chart does what, then, for the first two levels? With Manu out.

Parker, Miller. ?? Can Miller step on in, while there's no Manu? Or is that even the plan?

Green, Mills. (Then Simmons, if he'll stop throwing the ball to girls in the stands.) Makes Mills the SG, which is mostly his thing.

Leonard, Anderson. (Then Butler)
Duncan, Diaw/West
Aldridge, Diaw/West. (Then Boban)

Or what?

And of course still with Bonner as our field goal kicker.

Miller's game has never depended on athleticism. the game he has today is the same game he had 10 years ago. His mental edge to the game allows him to come off the bench cold, and contribute. That is why he is here. If someone goes down, or if two players go down, and you need your 3rd PG, who do you think would be more prepared for playoff play? Pop and RC says, Miller.

monkeypunk
02-28-2016, 05:45 PM
Miller is old but he will be invaluable when the bench just can't get it going. He's a creator who can run an offense and can generate open looks with his bbiq. Don't need to play him much, just when we need a steady hand during offensive lulls. Ray just wasn't aggressive enough to be a difference maker and not sure he ever will be. Miller can be, in the moment and in small spurts. Great for what we gave up, imo.

I wouldn't be surprised if guys like Miller, Butler and West come to the Spurs with the under the table promise of a role with the Spurs after their playing days are done. The Spurs fingerprints are all over the league from players, to coaches, to front offices. Just another amazing part of this franchise. Say what you want Miller is tough and HE CAN PASS. Spurs system doesn't require a player to be athletic. Ray was probably the 3rd most athletic player on the team behind Simmons and Mills and he GOT CUT.

Expect a lot of Ollies and open 3's/Jumpers when he is on the court. As someone post in another post, the Spurs bench +/- has dropped considerably since Manu went down. Having Miller provides the Spurs with a passer on Manu's level. He is an insurance policy in case Manu goes down.

I for one think he is a great pickup for THIS YEAR with Manu recouping from his injuries. Seriously, I would rather the Spurs have him than Kevin Martin.

Article on Miller

Quotes from Pop:

"His basketball IQ is off the charts," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "What a pro. Tough minded, disciplined and he'll pick up things very quickly."

Popovich said he had been following the 17-year veteran's career for a while, and he always thought Miller would be a good addition to the Spurs.
"He's one of those players you look at and say, boy, I could figure out how to fit him in ... , because he has been such a great player for several teams," Popovich said. "He's just a pro, the consummate pro."

I doubt he will get 10-15 mn a game on average... depends on point differential entering second half of 4th quarter tbh which is quite different than what would be average PT for a guy like KMart (if we sign) but you already know that

Entirely possible. He has been the PG for at least 7 teams and had to adjust to many players sweet spots. Excellent for his passing on the court and also helping the other younger players spot them.

The Spurs last pure PG was probably TJ Ford before he retired. Tragic, because it was tantalizing to see those passes and plays he made, but he didn't make it to the post season.

I loved him tonight. Wasn't impressed at all with him before. Very slow, seemed very unathletic.

He seemed better in that, but was a GREAT passer and was shooting well. Hope he can keep up this level of play.

Man, I know, those are OBVIOUS low blows to Parker coming from his own teammates and assistant coach. Parker cost the Spurs the game in Indy. With Miller, they was no stuck in the mud offense for the Spurs. Minny was on their toes all night.

Miller is actually 6'3 1/2" and 6'4" + w/ shoes. He is a bigger PG which is why he has been so effective posting up over the years.

They definitely looked good, but remember Minny is ranked 25th in the league in points allowed (105.7/game) and 28th in opponent field goal percentage (47.0%). Parker lit these clowns up for 50 once.

People can say whatever they want about Miller, but his passes are nice. He hasn't been in the league all this time for nothing. With the likes of players like Boozer, Weems, etc can't stay in the league. That man is 40yrs old, an the Spurs dropped a young talent to sign him. That says a lot.

This. When TJ went down with what ended up being a career ending injury it was really disappointing because he looked like he was going to contribute a lot. He was only 28 when he was in SA and retired.

If TJ doesn't go down I wonder if the Spurs sign Mills or develop CoJo. That was CoJo's rookie year right before Mills came onboard.

Ford actually would have helped against OKC that year too, when they were clamping down our predictable offensive sets, it would have helped to bring in a natural pg with the ability to make things happen.

I guess the question is how much does Andre play when Tony is healthy? All three of our point guards bring such different things to the table that it could almost be situational. I'd hate to see Andre wasting on the bench in the playoffs. But he's going to be useful where Patty is too small: Livingston and (maybe) Rivers.

Against the wolves Miller showed exactly what role he going to play in the future. His vision, ball control, passing ability & knowing the correct tempo to push the ball was on full display. Even at 40 still very impressive.

Forget Manu insurance. He's the spurs PG insurance. Full stop. Great move by Pop

I know it's early but his defense so far has surprised me. I expected him to give very little effort on that end but he looked engaged out there. He's actually moving his feet and did a nice job helping off Rubio in the last game.
