View Full Version : Bulkier Garnett

The Wolves' Kevin Garnett has been training his tender knees by running in sand in Malibu, Calif. The 7-footer, who has added muscle this summer and is up to a career-high 253 pounds, is expected to play more power forward than small forward this season. When Garnett was drafted by the Wolves in 1995, he weighed 210 pounds.

Do you think that Garnett gaining weight and playing more PF is good for the Wolves?

If he means he'll spend more time in the low post, yes.

I thought he mostly played PF anyways.

Yes. While I don't think it's good to gain a lot of weight all at once, Garnett's only real limitation is his strength. A bigger Garnett will be able to bang inside more. He already has very good post moves, but with some extra meat he can fight for better position.

Garnett is like Tim, a finesse player, not a power, brute-force player like Shaq. I don't think a few pounds will change his game that much.

For "tender" knees, 10 or 20 pounds more weight on them can't be all positive.

Wolves have a bigger question mark in their rooke head coach,

Actually, the whole team is question mark. Good luck on making the playoffs.

If the new coach keeps him at the top of zone defenses, it won't matter much.

Any of you guys hear the rumor about KG going to the Lakers?

Fox Sports Radio on JT the Bricks show friday night, Looney came out and said he has two different credible sources that say LA is trying to do whatever it can to get KG out there... Funny thing is they reported the reason that Spree didnt come to Detroit is because he wants to follow KG to the Lakers...

Call me cynical, but I think the added weight to KG's wirey frame will end up in a season-ending knee injury sometime in the spring...

bigger muscles or a bigger mouth? he should be doing strength training to strengthen the muscles in and around his knees... not trying to bulk up...

:lol .... Cmon!! That's always been his excuse, he needs to start being the leader that Timmy is so that he'll make his own cast, and TEAM.

That's why he has nothing.

"That's why he has nothing"

Tim also has had the very good fortune to have Pop's coaching, system, and recruiting. The Spurs are far and away not only Tim.

I wonder how much he weighed last season.

If he weighed 220 (like he's listed) then 33 pounds is a lot to put on over the summer and be able to be comfortable playing at that weight.

Maybe he already weighed like 240 though - then it's not that big of a deal.

I agree he needs to be a better leader... That's really all he's missing to be a more complete player.

But like boutons said, Timmy has had an awesome supporting cast thanks to Pop and everyone behind the court. KG hasn't.

The poor supporting cast excuse for KG is weak.

He's played with damn good players over the years.

Terrell Brandon averaged 15-17 ppg there and 7-10 apg during his time there.
Stephon Marbury averaged over 17ppg.
Latrell averaged 17ppg in 03-04, while Cassell averaged over 19.
Wally averages 15ppg for his career.

Except, the Spurs have made as close to perfect a team that will revolve around Timmy.. Everybody and everything is strategically put to make the team work w/ Timmy as its leader.

I highly doubt the T-Wolves have been that successful in doing that w/ KG.

Sure, some players he's played alongside have been really good ones, but as we witnessed w/ the Lakers 2 yrs ago, having great players in a team does not automatically mean success for them, if they're not working as complimentary of each other.

I'm not excusing KG, though... I do think he needs to grow as a leader.

IMO KG's best seasons were 02-03 and 03-04. I don't think he'd again hit that peak in terms of Mental fitness. It seems harsh on KG, but he seems to have lost his edge in this area.

Terrel Brandon - no defense
Stephon Marbury - a rookie, no defense
Latrell & Sam - made the WCF and only lost because of injuries, Spurs got whipped in round 2
Wally - Horrendous defense.

The only times the Wolves and Spurs have had similar supporting casts was in 2003-2004, and the Wolves made the WCF while the Spurs got smoked in round 2.
KG > Duncan - Get over it.

They were both beaten by the same team. There goes that logic.

KG > Duncan :blah :blah :blah , What world do live on? There's nothing to get over :lol We all know the score. What happened to Indy in 2003-2004? :rolleyes A lost is a lost, no matter what round a team exits in. The ultimate goal is the Championship, even if a team looses in the finals, consider them whipped! Since the Spurs made it to the finals and WON everytime they we're there, there's no "getting smoked". Try keeping Artest out of the stands, off the mike, and on the floor this year. "I need time off to promote my BS group!" :lol and your team might have a chance to get by the 2nd round next year! If you get by Detroit, Miami, or even Cleveland for that matter. You'll still have to deal with the SPURS!

Not really, KG and co took it to 6, same as the spurs, BUT without the second best player not to mention a healthy pg that wasn't NBDL material.

How many of those rings would there have been if the second best spur was out?

Kori, your better than that to throw stat-whores that don't play defense into the equation. Think before you rehash that crap. VERY surprised that you don't know KG's weight more accurately either. He was 220 shortly after coming into the league. The gain is minimal, 10 lbs or so. I suppose you think he's 6'11 too?

:lol

Whatever happaned to all the tools here that refused to believe his knees were bothering him this year?

I know he was 220 when he came into the league. I was asking how much he weighed last season and noted that if it was 240 or so, then I don't see the point of noting that he's up to ~250. It would be virtually a non-factor.

yes, cuz he'll be a more dominant post present with more bulk...

he might, MIGHT not be as mobile on the wings, but Championships are Won out of the low post in today's NBA...

he should be able to defend TD better as well...hopefully not, but we shall see...

Artest Factor, by any way you slice it, duncan>kg. 3 finals mvps, 2 league mvps, and most importantly 3 NBA Championship rings. it's no knock on kg, but he just hasn't got it done. maybe he will in the future, but he hasn't yet.
