A high-profile pro-gun activist was rushed to hospital after she was shot in the back by her four-year-old son after he found her pistol lying on the back seat of her truck. Jamie Gilt, 31, who posts about firearms on her social media accounts was driving through Putnam County, Jacksonville, Florida yesterday in her truck when she was wounded. Her four-year-old son picked up a loaded .45 semi-automatic handgun from the back seat, pointed it towards his mother and pulled the trigger. The powerful round went through the front seat and passed through Gilt's body. Gilt flagged down a passing Sheriff's deputy and told him that she had been shot.

Deputies recovered a .45 semi-automatic handgun from the floor of the truck. They are satisfied that the round was fired from inside the vehicle. Gilt and her son had been travelling to pick up a horse from a relative when the accident happened. Putman County Sheriff's office spokesman Joseph Wells said a deputy noticed a truck with a horse trailer (http://rd.bizrate.com/rd?t=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.horseloverz.com%2Fhorse-barn-stable-supplies-equipment%2Fhorse-trailer-supplies%2Fhorse-trailer-supplies%2Fadco-sfs-aquasheet-bumper-pull-horse-trailer-cover%3Fgdftrk%3DgdfV27555_a_7c1161_a_7c4441_a_7c5 _d_663580&mid=202911&cat_id=12000700&atom=10442&prod_id=&oid=6074215645&pos=1&b_id=18&bid_type=10&bamt=2ed49773e33fbc05&cobrand=1&ppr=c9162aaae0c0d76d&af_sid=88&mpid=5-663580&keyword=horse%20trailer&rf=af1&af_assettype_id=10&af_creative_id=2912) driving erratically: 'As the deputy slowed to check on the vehicle, he observed an adult female in the driver’s seat motioning to him as if she needed assistance.

The deputy ran to the vehicle and quickly determined that the driver had been shot. The deputy notified the dispatcher of the situation and Putnam County Fire / Rescue was dispatched. The deputy provided first aid (http://skimlinks.pgpartner.com/mrdr.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fskimlinks.pgpartner.com% 2Fsearch.php%2Fform_keyword%3Dfirst%2Baid) until the arrival of paramedics. The victim was transported to University of Florida Health in Gainesville and was last reported to be in stable condition. The only other occupant of the vehicle was the victim’s four-year-old son, who was unharmed.

Before being transported to the emergency room (http://www.amazon.com/Fast-Facts-Nurse-Emergency-Orientation/dp/0826105211/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1351194671&sr=8-3&keywords=emergency+room), the victim told deputies that her son had accidentally shot her. The investigation by Major Crimes Unit Detectives and the analysis of the crime scene confirmed that the victim was accidentally shot by the young boy who was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle. The young man was reunited with other family members and Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Specialists continue to work with the family

The Florida Department of Children and Family Services are being notified and the investigation into how the child came to be in possession of the handgun is ongoing. According the Florida Times Union (http://jacksonville.com/news/crime/2016-03-08/story/woman-tells-putnam-county-deputy-son-4-shot-her-back-while-she-was), the responding deputy noticed the boy was not strapped to the booster seat in the car when he arrived at the scene. Wells said: 'We’re satisfied that this is not a criminal shooting. However Gilt may face criminal charges if the State Attorney's Office determine there was negligence on how the child obtained the firearm.

Kind of dumb. I am all for being able to carry. I will say though that if she is stupid enough to leave a loaded weapon by her 4 year old, she deserves to be locked up.

If you are going to carry than you HAVE to be responsible. She is just an idiot.

My grandparents lived on a farm out in the sticks, grandpa was a hunter and knew how to use a gun. If anyone would have tried a home invason or bother them I have no doubts grandpa could have protected his home (within reason). So I felt good about that. Without a weapon just what could some old man do?

I own a huge dog, a dog that would scare anyone. We put him out at night to roam the backyard. Both my neighbors on each side have had things stolen, I haven't and they don't own a dog.

We need protection.

If there was negligence on how 4 year old obtained gun. :rollin:downspin:

I'm sure the mom is suffering from extreme guilt in addition to her physical wounds. So I don't want any charges. Just let her get better.
But to say IF it was negligence. :rolleyes

Press charges sure, but taking her kid away from her is going too far, which is why it won't happen.

There were two people the kid had the best chance of shooting.
So he shot the right person.

Kinda worked out well.

You got 12 major awards from dancing and 3 consecutive Flag football player of the year awards to defend.
You need more than a dog. You need 6 2" 240 lbs of laffy taffy.

Nice Kimber.

If that's the gun she was shot with she's even stupider than I thought. 1911's have more safety precautions than any other handgun. Thumb safety and grip safety, and the grip safety has to be continuously depressed with the thumb safety disengaged to fire a round. That gun was either cocked and locked with no safety on or that 4 year old knows his way around a 1911.

Says pretty clearly that the kid wasn't strapped in properly to his car seat which is just wildly unsafe. He realized the danger he was in and acted accordingly. This is precisely the sort of self defense Florida's "sit your tushy" law was designed to permit.

Not a gun guy or anti-gun, but isn't a loaded gun with the safety off a huge no-no especially around children? What a dumb twat.

She's more than just a dumb twat. She got shot with quite possibly the safest handgun available, when properly safety'd of course.

She says she taught her 4 year old how to shoot, I assume the kid knows how to take off the safety then.

Not defending her, just saying maybe the kid wanted to off his nutty mom if he knew how to operate a gun.

4 year olds don't learn to shoot on .45 ACP 1911's, and 1911's have more "safety" built in to design. Stupid mom had to have one in the chamber safety off. I don't know how the little guy didn't break a couple fingers or have the gun fly back and break his nose. .45 ACP out of a gun that size has some serious recoil.

You can't assume that with a woman who probably lets her son play with a loaded gun in the backseat of a car. You can look her up, I wouldn't be surprised she lets her kid sleep with a gun for self defense :lol

She's a fucking loon, shouldn't have kids or guns.

I don't think that was the gun in the tweet. I just thought it pretty eery that she called it a toy a couple of months before her kid shot her.

This is what I was thinking. Go to a gun range some day and watch the adult women struggle with the handgun (and not a .45ACP) just to get the safety off.

There's more to that story than she's telling.

Miami (AFP) - A two-year-old boy accidentally shot himself Monday with a gun he apparently pulled out of his mother's handbag and was fighting for his life, authorities in the US state of Georgia said.

"That child has been rushed to an area hospital and is currently in critical condition and currently in surgery," said Mark Lavigne, spokesman for the DeKalb County police department.

Lavigne said the circumstances were under investigation but "the information we're getting is that it is accidental, it's not an intentional act."

The child, who has not been identified, apparently took the handgun out of his mother's bag and shot himself in the stomach.

The family, who were from neighboring North Carolina, were staying in a hotel in Lithonia, east of Atlanta, at the time of the incident.

"The mother is at the hospital. We're interviewing her. A second individual that was in the room we're interviewing at the scene here," Lavigne said.

In 2015, 13,399 deaths in the United States were caused by firearms, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which reports that 3,300 of those wounded or killed by guns were under the age of 18.

Americans are sharply divided over rules governing gun ownership, with any attempt to tighten them opposed by many as an infringement on their constitutional right to keep and bear arms.
