If the Spurs get the one seed, win 70+ games and Kawhi averages 30 and 10 from here on out, then I'd say there's a chance.

GSW are not the measure of success for the Spurs. There is no real difference between the two teams strength wise. GS is 33-4 vs. the West. Spurs are 33-5 vs. the West. If anything, the Spurs could be about 60-5 or so without all of the injuries.

I thought the same thing. But even then... small chance lol

(If he did this though, there definitely wouldn't be a unanimous decision in the voting lol)

And I think the Warriors are a lot better without Curry than the Spurs are without Kawhi. Not sure about that but I think that's correct.

No, but its a lot cliser than people think.

Kawhi still has to win over some analyst who still rely on reputation and stats though even for First Team accolades..its unfortuante, but he still has to play top basketball while Lebron and Durant slips. Looks like a pretty close race for first team between the three..even though kawhi should be a given.

Lebron and KD are established superstars so they might get in just for reputation alone even though hes played better than both of them this year.

Only way Kawhi has a chance at the MVP is if the Spurs finish ahead of Golden State. Simple as that.

And even in that scenario it would take incredible Kawhi games against the contenders to make it possible, which chances still very slim.

The end the media will always say Curry plays alone and is the best player in the world while Kawhi plays with 4 other hall of famers and in a system that molded him.

EVAY

I don't understand the curry fascination. Leonard definitely deserves votes. He's A 2 WAY PLAYER.

But the vote is not "The BEST Player"..it is the "Most VALUABLE Player", and anyone and virtually everyone has to acknowledge that GSW could likely not win any series against any playoff team if Curry were not on the team.

Kawhi is a superstar on a team with several (one-time) superstars. No one can (or should) deny that Aldridge, Duncan, Parker and Ginobili, while not as dominant as Kawhi anymore, are still forces in their own rights. Aldridge still is - the others are not so much, but could likely get us past the first round of the playoffs even without Kawhi.

Curry is a superstar on a team with no other superstars. He is more critical to GSW's success than Kawhi is to SA. This is not to put down Kawhi. You are right that he is a two-way player, but his importance to the Spurs is not quite as dominant as Curry's dominance is to GSW.

And as long as GSW is ahead of us in the standings, it will likely be unanimous.

EVAY

If we do well from here on out, Kawhi could get another Finals MVP, and that would be be better than the Season MVP, wouldn't it?

Their point differential over their opponents (highest in the NBA) suggests that they are dominating someone.

I think you're right, without a doubt. But if the Spurs somehow managed to take the top seed from GSW, in this historic season? He'd have a valid case. The MVP isn't supposed to be just the best shooter. It won't matter in the real world, but I would hope it at least wouldn't be unanimous, if all that happened.

Look at it this way.

Take Kawhi and Curry out of their respected teams.

Who wins more games? If SAS wins more than Kawhi doesn't deserve the MVP over Curry.

Hes probably a little bit over both Durant and Lebron...but you can never underestimate mainstream writers bro. They can be very dependant on repuation. Many of them dont even watch games or really follow the NBA. Judt check some of the hilarious votes last year.

Yeah I know but with the hype Kawhi's been getting lately. What, 3 covers in 2 months? That's big shit. The mighty might fall and Lebron is going to the 2nd team imho. Durant has been killing it at least...

He will need to outplay Curry in the head-to-head matchups, tbh..those statement games always resonate with MVP voters..

Kawhi has no chance for MVP. He's a nice little player but hardly someone that can take over on both sides of the court. I don't even think opposing teams really game plan because his offensive game is so limited.

I mentioned a couple months ago, the only way Kawhi has a chance (not win but get a couple of 1st place votes) is if the Spurs gets the #1 seed (that would require sweeping the remaining H2Hs w/ the Worriers) ala the 2007-08 Lakers when Kobe wrestled away the MVP from CP3 in the final week of the season. If the tables were turned then Curry could have finished strong & snatched the MVP from Kawhi but in the context of this season Kawhi is basically 2008 KG except he will finish 2nd instead of 3rd.

Never said he has a chance, I've said that since prime Tim Duncan the Spurs don't have a player who can dominate on both ends. Doesn't matter if he wins it or not, just having Kawhi as candidate in the MVP race it's a great thing.
