I think the media and ownership used that as leverage to get a new arena.

No. The ownership group threatened it; it is what ownership groups always do to leverage the powers-that-be into giving them a new arena. Your friend is misinformed as to the origin of the potential threat.

Well this is pretty topical
I remember, years ago, having to wait at a Barnes & Noble for a couple of hours before hitting a business meeting.
Something weird I used to do to calm the nerves...

I would go to a random section, choose a random book and read until it was time to go.
This one particular time I chose a nonfiction book documenting the history of Black Metal by a brilliant writer: Dayal Patterson.
I can't remember the name of the book now, but it's probably just "Black Metal".

It was amazing. I learned so much about that subculture and it's music and the controversies in the 90's, but it went beyond that and so much further.
I almost finished the entire book (and it was pretty big) before I had to leave and I was reluctant to do so.

I did finish reading it. It even caused me to delve into it, starting with the oldies like Bathory, Mercyful Fate and Venom.
Some good stuff. The genre has gone all over the place in it's life and most of the artists are hit, or miss to me, but there's some good stuff in there.

I'm sorry, were we talking about the Spurs up in here?

Actually, he didn't. What he did was get excited after we won in 1999, and want to re-sign, but the veterans told him it would be better if he waited until after the arena vote that fall. If the team, AND Timmy were hanging in the balance, the vote was more likely to pass. It did.

The funny thing was, Tim almost left right after the new area vote passed.
