View Full Version : Warriors: Who was the better player: 2004-2006 Nash or 2014-2016 Curry?

These were their peak years IMO. Over these seasons, here's how they stacked up:

Nash: 15.9ppg 10.3apg 3.5rpg 50.4% 42.5%3ptrs 90.8%FTs (2x MVP)
Curry: 26.1ppg 7.5apg 4.6rpg 49.0% 44.3%3ptrs 90.1%FTs (2x MVP, FMVP)

The way he's been lighting it up this year, most would say Curry has had the best run when comparing peaks. Nash was a beast though. I think if 2004-2006 Nash were on this Dubs team, they'd still be the favorites to win it all. Steph is the best shooter I've ever seen, but Prime Nash had a wet jumper too. Plus Nash was a better passer. I think I'd take Nash.

Thoughts?

Nash could never finish, Dallas, up the street, or, with 12.

Curry curried favor by finishing.

It does mean something, Mitch. It brings the Spurs into control again.

Nash could never be counted on for 40ppg, you don't change the most important part of the dubs and expect a positive result. I figure they'll be below spur-level

They're shooting is a wash. Difference? Steph chucked more - not really Nash’s game. He turned Amare into a stone cold Duncan killa. Imagine what Nash could do with all the weapons Curry has.

They're that good because Curry guts the defense by being on the court, his range is basically at your hometown of Guadalajara, jorje

Jalen Rose, Reggie Miller, Austin Croshere, A.I., Rip Hamilton, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Juan Carlos Navarro, Rudy Fernandez, and some unknown Argentine named P. Quineros have all gotten the best of Kirby over a series/in an important game. I don't think the GOAT shooter would have any problem. Steph would have Kirby on skates. In Kirb's limited defense, Steph would be hidden on Fisher and not be tasked with guarding Kobe since Steph is a PG. My only criticism toward Wardell is that he carries zero defensive load.

IF the Spurs do not blow that game 4 at home they were on their way to being up 3-1 basically and in total control of that series. Series was only tied 2-2 and heads act like the Spurs stole a series when they were in control of most of it SMH...

Game 7 Detroit, Game 7 Dallas in 014 and Game 7 in 2008 at NO says otherwise...... Sure they lost a few too.

They came back the next year and beat PHX 4-1 to kill all that talk too, they never could beat the Spurs it seemed.

I'm curious why you're crediting Kobe for Nash's lack of title when "Kobe's Lakers" were trash when Nash was at his peak in PHX and the Lakers never knocked them out during that span. It was the Spurs who forced him and his Suns into bitch status.

04-05: Loses to that year's champion Spurs in WCF.
05-06: Beats Lakers in first rounds, loses to Mavs in WCF, avoided Spurs since Mavs beat them.
06-07: Loses to that year's champion Spurs again, this time in the 2nd round.
07-08:Loses to Spurs YET AGAIN.

Nice revisionist history there Lakerfan. Even in Nash's 4 years before leaving Dallas for Phoenix, he lost to the Kings twice and the Spurs twice. So 01-09, he was knocked out by Spurs 5x, early 00's Kings twice, and Mavs once. He was 1-0 vs the Lakers in the playoffs in that span.

Did Nash deserve the back to back MVPs in your opinion?

jacobdrj
03-19-2016, 10:57 PM
This is a very good question. I have been contemplating questions like this all year. The first question I'd counter with is: 04 rules or 16 rules? I submit that LOTS of old time players who were role players or borderline stars with 04 rules (or 90's rules) would have been stars and borderline superstars, respectively, with '16 rules... Dell Curry, Steve Kerr, Sam Perkins, all would have benefitted from current defenses... Peja Stojakavic, Ray Allen and Reggie Miller would have been tier 1 superstars... I think Nash is in that same boat... But if Steph Curry played in 04, he might have become a star, but he more likely would have been relegated to spot up shooter duty or situational 3 point specialist sub...

I mean, we have seen the evolution of other guys like Kyle Korver who played in parts of both eras, and he went from role player to All Star due to the rule changes...

Probably Garnett or dirk in 05, and dirk or Lebron in 06.

Curry deserves his as well. All four years are pretty weak from an individual contributor perspective.

I will take peak curry over Nash. While currys defense isn't awesome, he looks like Gary Payton compared to Nash.

Yea, but KG and Dirk had won MVPs; and the media had a Steve Nash fetish that year. I think they may have given either of them (Kg, Dirk) the MVP in 05 if they knew Nash would be better the next year. I think Lebron was just stat stuffing in 06 whereas Nash was truly brilliant.

I had originally asked because in Open Court Shaq had it in his head that he was somehow robbed out of MVPs those years.

Dirk didn't win till 07.

Garnett won in 04 and I guess people thought he didn't deserve it when the wolves weren't progressing people expected them to in 05.

Lebron helped the cavs a lot in 06, that roster was horrible.

Shaq felt he had a case because the heat improved a lot that year after getting him, but he dismissed wades improvement.
