GOP Lawmaker Comes Out Against His Party Publicly, Refuses To ‘Suppress Votes’ Anymore



After the voting debacle in Arizona March 22, there has been renewed attention on the Supreme Court’s decision to gut the 1965 Voting Rights Act (VRA) in 2013, which would have likely prevented the election disaster in the state.

See, Arizona was one of 16 states which were once required to send their decisions for elections to the federal government for review because of their history of discrimination against Latinos and Native Americans. After the Supreme Court gutted the VRA , Arizona no longer had to get pre-clearance for how they planned on holding their elections. Ultimately, the most populous county in the state drastically reduced the number of polling stations in Maricopa County which led to long lines and wait times of up to six hours in some areas. In central Phoenix, an area with a high concentration of minority voters, there were 108k registered voters per one polling place. Had the state handed their decision to reduce the number of polling places from 400 to 60 to the Department of Justice, the DOJ would have laughed at them and denied their request. Whether it was the state’s intention or not, this was clearly voter suppression.

And one GOP lawmaker has had enough.

In a New York Times op-ed , Republican Representative Jim Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin wrote that he would rather lose his job than suppress votes.

Sensenbrenner wrote:


“Ensuring that every eligible voter can cast a ballot without fear, deterrence and prejudice is a basic American right. I would rather lose my job than suppress votes to keep it.”


In 2015, Sensenbrenner wrote a bill that would renew many elements of the VRA, including pre-clearance for states who engage in voter discrimination. The bill also requires all states to enforce bilingual elections and dings states who have a low minority turnout. All states must also be as transparent as possible in providing voters information on voting requirements, polling locations, and procedures. Sounds sensible if you believe in equal and fair democracy, right?

Arizona Governor Signs Bill Restricting Access to Medication Abortion

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey (R) signed a measure into law late last night which would restrict women’s access to medication abortion by forcing them to use a method of administering the medications that appears on the outdated, inferior, and less effective drug label originally approved by the FDA over 15 years ago in 2000.

Remarkably, today’s action comes only two days after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced (http://www.reproductiverights.org/press-room/updated-fda-label-better-reflects-evidence-based-medicine-could-expand-access-to-medicati) it approved a change to the label for medication abortion--sold under the label Mifeprex® in the United States--in order to better reflect current medical practice and knowledge gained from scientific evidence accumulated over recent years.

Flying in the face of advances in medicine and science, Arizona’s law would require women to follow the outdated protocol, which was based on data from the 1990s.

Said David Brown, Staff Attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights:

“This bill doubles down on Arizona’s politically motivated crusade to force bad medicine on women. A law requiring women to receive twentieth-century medical care in the twenty-first century is mean-spirited and offensive.

“Politicians have no business playing doctor by passing regulations that forbid patients from benefitting from decades of accumulated scientific evidence and restrict their ability to access abortion in the earliest weeks of pregnancy.”

The Center for Reproductive Rights—along with Planned Parenthood Federation of America—successfully challenged an Arizona law enacted before the FDA’s recent label change which had forced women who made the decision to end a pregnancy using medication abortion to follow the outdated FDA label. Arizona Republicans have instituted a new policy to protect themselves from potentially dangerous American reporters. Now, by order of the House speaker, reporters seeking access to the House floor will have to submit to background checks so that Speaker David Gowan can be sure they're not hardened criminals in disguise. Which is quite the coincidence, given that Speaker David Gowan has had a particular issue with a particular reporter recently (http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2016/04/08/3767777/david-gowan-bans-hank-stephenson-arizona/).

The new policy goes as far as to list specific offenses, including misdemeanor ones like trespassing, which automatically disqualify a reporter from being on the House floor for up to 10 years.

That’s significant because misdemeanor trespass is an offense that Arizona Capitol Times reporter Hank Stephenson was convicted of following a bar fight a couple years ago.

Early this year, Stephenson wrote a piece scrutinizing Gowan’s use of a state vehicle during a 19-day period last October during which he logged nearly 4,800 miles of windshield time.

Some of the events he traveled to were related to his congressional campaign, and using a state vehicle for that purpose is unlawful.

Gowan has since reimbursed the state more than $12,000, and his is office is now under investigation by Arizona’s Attorney General for misuse of public resources.


Yes, what are the odds that the only House reporter who seems to be disqualified by these new, very specific rules is the one whose reporting cost David Gowan $12,000 worth of free state vehicle time. It is uncanny, and so forth, and so on.
