Revealed today he has Parkinson's and some other bad stuff too. He said he went public because he didn't want anyone feeling sorry for him. I always respected the guy, he was a great coach and a noble foe. Coached the game with class and I am sure that is the way most Spurs fans will remember the guy as well.

Sad news indeed. I'm always blown away by how much Sloan was able to get out of players that never did shit elsewhere. E.g., Bryon Russell, Howard Eisley, Shandon Anderson, Chris Morris, Deron Williams

Hope he fights it off for a long while, fuck Parkinson's.

That is very sad, though people can live 10-20 years with that even from his age if they catch it early... a lot like prostate cancer or heart disease.

I never liked him, and some of his staff thought he spent time drinking with buddies that he should have spent preparing for games. (That came straight from the horse's mouth, but to be fair I understand that he outgrew some of that stuff.) But he was a damned good coach, and tough. His players tended to cross the line into dirty play. I think he coached them to be as close to the line as possible, so I guess that has to happen once in a while.

One thing I always admired about his coaching: his teams were the most disciplined I ever saw in the last minute of a game. If they were still close late in the fourth quarter, they were harder to put away than any other team. They could squeeze more good shot attempts into that last minute than seemed possible. I see poor clock management in the NBA all the time, but never any of those Jazz teams. That's all about coaching. As good as he was, it also helped that he had an owner that looked at the big picture, instead of playoff losses.

He had a rough time with his wife, and Parkinson's is something I wouldn't wish on anyone. It's just like him to hit it head on, and not want anyone to feel sorry for him.

Sloan was actually the real deal when it comes to no nonsense. Pop is a pretender in comparison.

Still better than pancreatic cancer or lupus, imo.

A coach in the NBA is so meaningless that his contributions usually only make an impact when he screws up. Jerry Sloan was the exception. He had Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer running as efficiently as John Stockton and Karl Malone. Think about what trash those players turned out to be. They were all-stars in Utah.

For me, quality of life will always trump quantity. A lot of these neurological diseases like Parkinsons, Alzheimers, Huntington's, it's a slow, downward spiral to your death. Cancer is all over the map, some you'll die quickly and others you can either survive or live with and have a decent quality of life. Who knows how Mcfly is still living. We don't know what his day to day life is like. He also has money to spend on whatever therapies or drugs out there.

cancer is like playing Russian roulette tbh

If we had a choice to play Russian roulette today or get parkinsons at 60+???

Imo most would pick the latter
