View Full Version : Fraud or no fraud?

Yesterday I saw a person renting videos at a local video rental place using one of the Red Cross disaster relief cards to pay for their purchase. Personally, I believe they have no business renting videos or using that money for any kind of entertainment. To me, that money should only be used for the basics, like food, water, clothes, and medical supplies.

Is this right?

To each his/her own I guess.

I know some of these people have spent this cash on worse things. Some people need/like to watch movies and thats gets them by.

Who knows. It don't matter to me.

But no fraud, it was given to them to them. I guess they could do whatever they want with it.

Can you buy/rent videos with the Lonestar card?

I don't know but this wasn't the Lonestar card though.

I'm not saying it was right or wrong, or that I would do or wouldn't do the same....

When you've been through what they have been through, I don't think wanting to watch some movies is a horrible thing. The Red Cross covers the basics of life (food, shelter, cloting etc etc) and this card was a supplement.

I don't think they were out of line to rent some movies at all.

I agree with that also Manny. But, my question is....where were they planning on watching the video?

Probably on the new big screen plasma tv they were going to pick up on their next stop. :lol

Who knows? A lot of the people have ended up with family. They had some TVs set up for everybody to use at the shelters.

One of the nights I volunteered down there, I worked in the computer lab. Half the computers in there were being used by kids to look at music videos. Technically, the computers in that room were only supposed to be used for FEMA documents and searching for loved ones. Official business in other words.

We all figured that if there were no adults who needed to use the computers, the rules didn't matter.

I guess I kind of feel the same about this situation. Whether it is some timeon a computer, some time spent out doing something fun, or a couple of DVDs from Blockbuster I completely understand.

Your life is shitty enough without taking away any possible outlets a person may have.

Maybe some of these people had the common sense to leave early and brought some things..like a small tv/DVD player...etc.

If i were in their shoes, I would have taken my small TV/ small DVD player along with more important things.

One thing that is simillar to this that does piss me off...

When I have worked Elf Louise in the past, it seems as though one out of every 3 or so houses - and I use the term house loosley here. Many of those places where worse than a backyard shed - had a huge big screen TV in them! Sure, these people couldn't afford to move out of the worst neighborhoods in town and couldn't afford Christmas gifts for their kids, but they had big screen TVs. Fucking stupid.

btw, it's not really fraud unless that person obtained that card in a fraudulant (sp??) way.. and believe me I've seen it plenty of times so I guess I don't doubt it could have happened. If they did get that card rightfully, then I don't really see a problem with them renting a movie with the card, it's not like they're spending hundreds of dollars on it.. renting a movie is not a big deal as far as how much cash is involved.

I think they are already being ostracized enough why make it worse. What's the big deal about wanting some normalcy in their lives. The last couple of week at mass there has a been a family that is being sponsored by another family at our church. They wear these stupid wristbands, like the ones in the hospital. I am sure they have to wear them in order to get their benefits or something, but it bugs the crap out me. It makes them stand out and feel uncomfortable. They just want to blend in. It makes me think of people in the internment camps. You keep seeing people stare and point at them and you catch yourself doing the same.
They are adults, let them decide how to spend their own money.

oh yeah.. "the bands".. they are all over her. even me being a worker, I have to wear one, but of a different color. I don't like them either. But they do have to have some control or else things would be crazier than they already are. One day that I was volunteering this lady came wanting to get her Red Cross card and she was crying and very upset because she had just got out of the hospital and they had cut off her band. They weren't letting her get any services at Reliant then cause she had no band. man i felt so sorry for her. i did get her help though (i hope. i sent her off to someone with more authoritah)
