This is awesome.

The Natural Environment Research Council decided to allow the people to vote on the name of their new polar research ship.

The winning name?

Boaty McBoatface

But here's the thing. They made the poll to popularize their work and make the geeral public aware of the ship's mission. They are doing this because they think that popularity is going to help them raise funds for the different expeditions and general financing of the vessel.

So can anybody think of a better PR move to achieve that than to actually name the boat Boaty McBoatface? :rollin

I agree 100% Although, they'll end up naming it something else I suppose. Which is a shame. People need to lighten up.

By naming a whale, "Mr. Splashy Pants", to raise $ concerning awareness of the slaughter of the great Cetaceans by the Japanese apparently. Although we don't know how the dice settled in that particular public naming adventure.

It's one of those "have your cake and eat it too" things where holier than thou groups (and they are, be honest) want to dip into the church of public opinion for the sake of funding by lowering themselves for a moment but then pull back on the yoke at the last second before they actually touch down in commoner land by overruling public opinion.

So...they ended up giving the name to a sub instead. Lame.
