No reason for the beautiful game tbh. Any ball movement should stop as soon as Aldridge is looking at an open 15 foot shot. No extra passes necessary.

this team could potentially even be better than the 2014 iteration.....

but of course, im getting excited, this is just one game after all.....we shall see..........

People forget what The Beautiful Game was about. Being aesthetically pleasing was a byproduct--the goal was efficiency. Efficiency in bodies moving, efficiency in conversion of looks, etc.

Aldridge with an open midrange shot is efficient. That isn't Tiago out there. Kawhi in an iso is efficient as well.

Damn...They're destroying people in the playoffs.

But we still need the Beautiful Game with the 2nd unit. When Kawhi/LMA, both are on the bench, the Spurs need ball-movement to create good looks.

I would argue that this is the closest the Spurs have come to emulating TBG since 2014.

Rather than dribble dribble dribble, this is the first time all year I saw them play inside out, and find open looks.

Assist numbers tell the story.

But also we have now, two elite ISO/mid-range shooters, and that has changed the offense. But agree with you that the dribble-dribble-dribble don't generate favorable shooting situations anymore.

39 assists IIRC... Wow.

This is the biggest resemblance to the beautiful game I've seen since 2014... Everything changes when Danny hits his threes. LMA was torching them 1 on 1 instead of being doubled like he always is, Kawhi got multiple open lanes to the rim because they were sticking to Danny in the corner etc.

Donovan's anwser for game 2? Pressuring/double teaming LMA while Kawhi is feasting on 1-on-1 matchups.

The Spurs made an effort to move the ball and score in the paint, which is the big difference IMO. That's what opens up Danny's shooting. Aldridge and Danny could have had average shooting nights and the Spurs still blow them out. They didn't just throw the ball into the post and stand around like they did in the first round.

And since they're behind in the series, I'm expecting Durant and Westbrook to try and DO MORE, which means even less involvement for their teammates.

All good signs.

If the game is competitive one of them will always be on the court with the rotations.

Maybe this was the start of them playing to their potential offensively (obviously not the unsustainable percentages, but how smoothly it ran) or maybe it was just one game. If it's the latter, they have virtually no chance to win the championship.

Yeah, the extended rest seems to have done the Spurs a world of good. They had an obvious spring in their step last night...plenty of energy.

And what is even better? Neither Kawhi or LMA went over 30 minutes.

Aldridge with 38 in less than 30 minutes. Kawhi with 25-5-5.

They came to play.

It was the beautiful game last night

pop started emphasising space and pace once the playoff started. All year long they were playing slow, not pushing the ball and many were taking contested jumpshots

hopefully the spurs offense continue to go in the right direction, its the only way they can get past the thunder and have a shot vs gsw

I'm not worried about the Spurs having a let-down in the least. They may lose a game (I posted Spurs in 5) or two in this series but it won't be due to them being the inferior team. Sometimes shots don't go in. They certainly won't be out-coached or out-executed. I'm looking forward to seeing how many different ways the Spurs can beat the Thunder. We've already had the beat-down where a shell-shocked Thunder team didn't look like they belonged on the same floor.

What's next? A slow start with a comeback to win? Overcoming foul trouble to Kawhi or LMA and still winning? Seeing Manu or Patty have a huge game on the road? Good times.

Let's not overreact to one game.

That said, I'm really looking forward to seeing some consistency on the flow, discipline and focus they showed.

For some reason the Warriors keep on having games like they're playing 6 on 5. Spurs need to be ready.

And if this is the kind of execution they can sustain, it should get pretty exciting.

It gets annoying the obsession people have with the TBG. Like I said earlier about TBG it was a once in a lifetime moment for the Spurs that can't be replicated. It's on the same level the '01 Lakers playoff run was on when it comes to being able to replicate. I remember Manu saying after '14 finals that it would be impossible to replicate TBG.

Warriors are the current keepers of the beautiful game-tier offense. It's probably 85-90% of the 2014 Spurs level. They more than make up for that 15% deficit with curry being superhuman.

Don't forget the Warriors run TBG with their best players (i.e. the Starting Lineup and the Death Lineup) while the Spurs mainly run it with the bench players. The Warriors maintain their defensive pressure while there's a drop-off when Pop trots out Patty, Fatty and Fat Head.

GS has the best player in the league. It helps that Klay and Curry are GOAT shooters along with having several players who are above average 3 point shooters. Spurs don't have that type of personnel.

I think you are missing the point. People are not asking for TBG. They are saying move the damn ball. No level will ever match that 2014 team, but the offense this year completely centered around ISOs. Get it?
