View Full Version : Patty, Danny and Manu to the 3 point line on the last play. Why?

This is an indictment of today's NBA, and to a lesser extent, a criticism of the aforementioned players:
The Spurs were only down one point. So why did Patty run to the three point line?
And worse, why did Danny camp out at three point line during Patty's shot?
And worst of all, why did Manu run to the three point line after passing the ball to Patty instead of staying down low to help with the rebound?
This was poor situational awareness by the Spurs. But mostly, it's an indictment of how the NBA has become a low percentage 3 point shooting league. I think as recently as a decade ago, everyone would have crashed the boards and worked for a putback instead of hoping that someone else would secure the rebound and pass to them for a low percentage, high pressure 3 pointer.
Bottom line, we're viewing an inferior product. Today's NBA had corrupted everyone, Spurs included.

Patty: caught the lob from Danny and thought, perhaps correctly so that attempting a layup would have gotten blocked by Adams Family. After Patty passed to Manu, running to the trey line helped clear space. Patty was getting out of the way and trying to draw someone out on him. My regret is that Patty did not fake the shot. Adams Family had wayyy overcommitted on the block attempt. Would have barreled right into Patty.
Green: I am assuming with Green it is complete force of habit. When he circled around Durant, I thought Manu could have passed him the ball. But I think we all agree a Manu teardrop seemed the best option. At any rate, I think it's simply to your OP that the arc is the only place Green is comfortable. On most in between shots he looks very awkward.
Manu. Manus running to the 3 point line was indeed retarded and served no purpose whatsoever.

That's what's so maddening. He's too cerebral and seasoned to make such a bonehead move.
But again, I think even a legend like Manu has fallen prey to today's NBA mentality that says a 3 pointer is always the best option, even if you're only down one.
