View Full Version : How long and how did you become a Spurs fan?

I pretty much just turned on the TV one day back in 08 and they were playing the Celtics. Doc was talking about how the Spurs were the defending champs and that they'd be a tough out in the playoffs. Never really followed sports before that day but something about the Spurs just drew me in.

Been a fan since I've been in this city. Too young for the 99 championship but was able to enjoy 2003 onwards.

1999. Somewhere during their title run, before the Memorial Day Miracle but I don't remember exactly when. I was 9 years old living in SA. After that first title I followed them every year. My parents were die hard fans, it was only a matter of time before it filtered down to me.

Started following watching since I was 8 in 95'. Remembered watching Robinson getting punked by Hakeem and Horry bombing 3's in Houston. Mr Duncan came into the league and have been spoiled with success ever since.

When I was in Junior high My Dad took me to a Spurs game against the Bucks the season before the Admiral joined the Spurs. Growing up in Austin I would go to 10 to 12 games per year. Now that I live up North in Minnesota I still try to go to several of the road games within driving distance and I also try to come to San Antonio once or twice a year for Spurs games.

I have been a spurs fan since the spring of '94 which was before Duncan. I became a spurs fan after watching an NBC game way back in '94 which was Magic vs Spurs. Back then Michael had retired so just like every other kid in elementary school I was looking for a new team to root for. For some odd reason even as a kid I hated Shaq. I remember watching David Robinson dominate him in that game and make him look silly. I also liked Rodman's hair colors as a kid along with the way he played the game. Robinson and Rodman got me hooked on being a spurs fan. Ever since that game I have been a fan.

Early 2000's. I saw a David Robinson post game interview and thought he seemed like an amazing person. Decided to start rooting for them at that moment. Before that I had just rooted for Jordan as a kid.

This one time I won tickets at a poker game to the 2002 playoffs. Alamodome.

That was back when there were battle blogs and legit posts.
Back when Duff was jewing JimCS out of 1000's of dollars on a weekly basis and that one older blonde chick was blowing dudes at GTGs

good times.

really young, somethin like 5 years old, family was watching a basketball game (lakers) and being the Philo i am, i decided i didn't want to root for them. i asked my dad what basketball team is most like the raiders and he told me the spurs wear black jerseys, and that was enough of a selling point for me. a couple of months later the spurs drafted duncan and my dad was telling me how my favorite team got this really good college player

obviously at that age i didnt really watch that many games, but i do recall much of the 98-99 playoff run, we always had playoff games on in the house. we didnt really get any spurs games outside of national TV, but i would get the paper every day as a kid and read the sports section cover to cover

I can't pinpoint it because I was about 6-7 years old. It was around 1991-92 and I remember some of the Spurs players visiting my elementary school. I remember seeing how tall they were and cool they looked.

I then began watching them on tv, but I remember being an MJ fan as well. But little by little, my devotion was only to the Spurs.

I remember the first real heartbreak i felt was when they lost to the Rockets in 1995. I couldn't believe the Spurs had lost 2 games at home.

I really got into it in 99. I took a break for a while then picked back up in 2003. Traveled in 2004 so didn't watch any games, but settled back into Texas in 2005 where I really started studying the game. Was in a bad accident in 2006 that had me in the hospital for nearly a year, but when I got out in 2007 I made it a big deal to appreciate life and went to a lot of games.

Had a lot going on in my life after that and unfortunately didn't really truly start being a fan again until 2014.

Mid 90s, we moved to Central Texas and started spending more time back in San Antonio for family. This also coincided with the Admiral, who was already one of my favorite players, so I just started really digging the Spurs.

i was a Lakerfan growing up, Magic is still a top 3 favorite, but when the trifecta of assholes took over, I couldn't root for them even though they started winning more. Especially after the 2002 debacle.

So something about the Spurs and the culture resonated for me and been a fan since then.

2003. the playoffs were right around the corner. figured it'd be a good enough time to start watching.

we were the #1 seed going up against an 8th seeded suns team. game 1 came down to the wire. we lost because marbury got a rebound from a missed free throw... ran down the court and made a buzzer beating three.

i remember being so confused. i was like, 'is this... a thing that happens?'

since then i'd say it's a really safe bet to say i've seen at least... 85% of regular season games and about 95% of playoff games.

Sometime between 1991-93. I was watching NBA Inside stuff and they did a segment on David Robinson. I decided right then and there that he was going to be my favorite player and being really young I figured whatever team my favorite player was on should be my fave team. It was really random since I was born & raised in Miami.

In 1999. I was 6 years old and that was the first finals I had ever watched. Basically some of the first basketball I really remember even seeing on TV. Spurs won the championship and I just stuck with them ever since. I really enjoyed watching them win and celebrate in that series. That's when I really got into basketball and started playing in youth leagues myself.

I get it. My grandfather is a Red Sox fan, and somewhere in my adolescence I started following them.

There are are home videos of me as a baby crawling into my mother's lap during a Spurs game, where she picks me up - her newborn - and moves me aside without taking her eyes off the TV.

Game 3 vs Nuggets in 2005 Playoffs. Ran into the game accidentally while channel surfing, had never seen a game before that and I literally knew nothing about the league. Decided to stick with it cuz there was nothing else on. Ended up being completely mesmerized by everything Manu did on the court, been a Spurs fan since that day.

Mid 90's tbh... could not watch much but I was playing BB and NBA started to be hyped in France with Canal + and some magazines. I was hooked totally from the beginning of the twin towers... followed and root for them since tbh...

i wanna say it was 91 when i became a fan. i must have been 14 or 15 at the time. i have no idea how i became a fan though. when i was little, i remember my uncles having iceman posters. but that was the only influence i can remember. i think i was just channel surfing one night, settled in on a spurs game, and just really enjoyed it. i had never been into pro sports at all at that point, and then kind of overnight i was a huge spurs and cowboys fan.

1980 or 1981. When my father was assigned here. (Military)

I've been through the George Gervin, Johnny Moore, Mike Mitchell, Artis Gilmore and Gene Banks days. It was a tough 18 years until Tim showed up. He changed everything. Top 6 Spurs of all time for me:

1. Tim Duncan
2. David Robinson
3. Manu Ginobili
4. Kawhi Leonard
5. George Gervin
6. Alvin Robertson

I only casually watched basketball until 89-90 when the Magic came into the league as I lived in Orlando. Started watching it a lot more and David Robinson in his rookie year became one of my favorite players. Over the next few years I became a fan of the Spurs and not just DRob. My sister moved to Austin in the early 90s and I went to a game at Hemisfair in 1993. I moved to Austin in 1998 and been following fanatically since then.

Moved to San Antonio in 1994. Had been a casual bb fan before that, but got my first partial season tickets in the 95-96 season, then full season tickets in '96-97. So my first full season was watching DRob get a broken foot, then a hernia, then etc. etc., but loving watching Dominique Wilkins play such spectacular ball. He was the only reason to go to games that first year (he may have been 95-96...I really can't remember). Then we got Tim, and we kept our season tickets for another 12 years. Then my husband got sick of driving down to the AT&T center from northwest SA so we sold our charter seats and starting watching from our couches.

Have not missed watching a regular season game or a playoff game, either in person or on TV since 1996.

I am afraid that tomorrow night will be the last time I see Tim and Many in Spurs uniforms, and it won't be in our house. That makes me very sad.

Bullets fan from 1963 till 1994 (Unseld's last year as coach and I had no longer considered NoVa home since 1983),
but for one year as a primary Capitals fan in 1970 (only year in Washington), Bullets #2.

Spurs became my loose #2 team in 1974 when my sister went to UTSA, which became a solid #2 in 1983 when my parents moved to Bexar County. My sister and brother-in-law had season tickets and my father used one of those tickets for most games. I followed the Spurs as a safe talking point with my father. Spurs became #1 after dropping the Bullets in 1995. And I became a solid Spurs fan when I had season tickets at Wake Forest 1991-1997 and my favorite Demon Deacon was drafted by the Spurs. As my father is still in Bexar County, I suspect I will remain a Spurs fan even if the Deacon's wheels may have fallen off.

Hawks as my current local team are my new #2.

Chronologically, by favorite players have been Gus Johnson, Wes Unseld, B.J. Armstrong, and Tim Duncan.

I pretty much just turned on the TV one day back in 08 and they were playing the Celtics. Doc was talking about how the Spurs were the defending champs and that they'd be a tough out in the playoffs. Never really followed sports before that day but something about the Spurs just drew me in.
Good thread and I will be opening up a bit here.
My dad had an accident in '78. Alive, but... not a human.
My ma... she did what she could to raise three kids all of a sudden with no education. She was very pretty though and had men around her all the time.

She was dedicated to me, (my brother and sis were 11/10 years older and took off ASAP) but needed help which wasn't a reliable thing so while she turned to the guys that wanted to do things for her, I turned to other things to replace the void I had.
It was 1989: I had never watched basketball in my life, living in Austin, Texas, but my mother was working her bartending position at the Driskoll and I had nowhere to go, but watch TV.

A station was showing the San Antonio Spurs and I was sitting there thinking: This shit is GREAT! I forgot about my worries. I forgot about all of it.
I watched the Dave Rob era where his teams just couldn't get it done, year after year.

I was one of the few fans, at the time, that fully supported Pop taking the team fully from Bob Hill because I knew he didn't have the defensive chops.
I learned that much already, by the time it happened.

This team is now my family.
When Duncan goes, I'm going to cry.
Ginobili too. It will be a true loss in the Family.

But here we go, we got Kawhi leading the way with some unbelievable play and a supporting cast we hope can be improved upon, but even if they can't- I'm going to be there, brother.

Basically from birth, father was a big fan since the Gervin era. His story of reserving home Courtside seats for the finals after we were up 3-1 in the conference finals and then blowing it was an often told story. Also gave me a taste of that seemingly ever present choke spectre we have.

Good post and story bud, cheers :toast

It was way back in 1992 that I started dating the woman who would later become my wife. She had gone to high school with David Robinson and was a huge Spurs fan. The rest, as they say, is history.

BTW, we celebrate our 20th Wedding Anniversary next month. :toast
You are lucky mate, no wonder she a keeper. Having a wife thats a hardcore spurs fan. I think most male spurs fans would love that in their partner. At the least if they loved the game.

Thankfully my wife doesnt waste any of her time on the spurs so she wont be reading this. Lol

Congrats for next month :toast

I remember David Robinsons bad ass and playing him in Sega NBA game in the 90s. Then I remember watching highlights of a 19 year old French PG going coast to coast in the playoffs, and the analysts being impressed at his cold bloodedness. Then I remember rookie Manu and that year I fully became a spurs fan. Yes I used to like Evita back then :lol

2011 - A benevolent Spurs VIP season ticket holder sold me a pair of $400 baseline tix for $300. So we made the trip to SA to see our beloved rookie Kawhi Leonard. We fell in love with your city and the fans gave me a thumbs up when they saw my Aztec T. You guys knew he was going to be great before I did. It was so exciting to see him on the floor with HOF TD, Manu & TP. I will support the Spurs through thick and thin, ups and downs. I know Kawhi isn't a born leader, as few of us are, but he sure can play hoops and has the heart of a lion.

I'm so grateful to SA for filling my otherwise boring days waiting for the next Spurs game. Sports bars here in San Diego are especially grateful.

This subject comes up every couple of years.

1979 - the Spurs got blatantly screwed by the refs in the Finals. I had no particular attachment to the Spurs, but I was pretty indignant at watching a team get a championship taken away from them by the damn zebras.

Doug Moe was the Spurs' coach, and he made some comments about the refs screw-job. The league fined him $3K. I heard on the radio that Spurs fans were taking up a collection to pay his fine - in pennies. And I said, "Hell, yeah. These are my kind of fans." I collected up a few big jars of pennies and drove from Victoria to donate them to the cause.

I'd donate again if Pop would just get himself a fine.

Thanks man. She passed: March 14, 2014. She was a full blown fan with me by then. I would drive an hour and a half to her place with my wonderful, supportive wife and we would go hog wild on game nights and it was a real (but irrational, obviously) feeling that they were going to kill Miami, because she wanted it so.

Silliness, but hell- aren't we all at times?

I used to watch a lot of basketball when I was little mostly just because it was on the TV. During that time Tracy McGrady was my favorite player, but I stopped watching completely in like the 6th grade. I only started paying attention to basketball again when Kobe (and the refs) were trying to will the Lakers into the playoffs in 2012-13. After a crazy comeback win from Kobe, I started looking up some comebacks by individual players. I stumbled across McGrady's 13 points in 33 seconds which I had never seen before and decided to look into how he was doin. As the playoffs were getting started the Spurs picked up McGrady so I started watching the Spurs games to see him play. Me being completely out of the loop, I didn't know McGrady was washed up (especially after watching Kobe and them being close in age). I was watching the games from the beginning thinking he was gonna start (only at first) and when I saw he wasn't even playing I started watching who was starting instead; Kawhi.

After the playoffs ended, I decided I was gonna keep watching basketball, but I didn't consider myself a Spurs fan yet. I picked a few of teams to keep track of to see if I even wanted to keep watching basketball. Those teams were The Spurs(I liked Kawhi), Blazers(I liked LMA and Lillard), and Kings(I like Isaiah Thomas). Kawhi quickly became my favorite out of the 4 so I payed more attention to the Spurs. There was just something about Kawhi that made me think he could be really good and the way Pop talked about him made me more confident in those beliefs. I watch the whole 2013-14 season and tried not to overreact from the Championship and Kawhi winning FMVP. I told myself I wouldn't decide if I was a Spurs fan until the end of the 2014-15 season. If I cared about the outcome then I would call myself a Spurs fan. Even though I'm a calm person, the lost to the Clippers really bothered me so that was that.

tl;dr: I was a player fan of Kawhi after the 2012-13 playoffs and grown to care about the Spurs since then.

I began to watch the NBA in 1.997 but I didnt like Michael Jordan so i rooted for the Utah Jazz in the finals in 97 and 98. I continued rooting for the Jazz until 2.000 so I hated Shaq and Kobe. One day at the TV Spurs was playing against Dallas in 2.001 playoffs. That day Tim was a beast. It was maybe game four but i couldnt remember exactly. Commentators said that this kid could stop Shaq and Kobe some day, so I began to pay atention to Spurs games. I was disappointend with the WCF this year, but I liked Tim game and I knew some day he will kick Shaq and Kobe in the a**. In Colombia it wasnt easy watch the games in this time but normally in the playoffs ESPN showed various games. So again we lost against LA in 2.002 until finally in 2.003 we could destroy them. I was so happy seeing Kobe and Fischer crying.

I thank my one horse home town for my lifelong fanhood, but I didnt start watching 70+ games a season til Tim was drafted. After the then historic 99 run i was hooked for life.

2001 was the toughest beatdown I ever experienced as a fan. It was the one time i questioned whether being a fan at all was worth it. 0.4 was the most difficult play i ever experienced, nothing holds a candle to the way i felt after it. These OKC losses hurt but they cant cut me as deep as 2001 or 2004 did.

It was actually a funny story. I lived in the Philippines for most of my life. My uncle was from California and a die-hard Lakers fan. Anyway, back in '01, all I knew about NBA or basketball in general were two (or three) things: Michael Jordan, and Shaq/Kobe. I come into my grandparents' room and see my uncle watching a basketball game. It was the Spurs against the Lakers. My uncle was like "Hey, I'll give you 20 pesos if the other team wins. If the Lakers win, you shine my shoes". We agreed on that principle. And I was watching basketball, watching this 7-foot behemoth of a Tim Duncan guide his team to winning, through great defense and great offense. I thought Shaq/Kobe was invincible, but Timmy proved me wrong. Since then, I have the 20 pesos, and I'm a Spurs fan.

What I mean by that is, one Saturday afternoon when I was like 10 or 11 I happened upon an NCAA BB game featuring Wake Forest and I feel in love with the post game of their sophomore Center named Tim Duncan. I was a Duncan fan since that moment. Followed him through out his college career and then became a Spurs fan the moment he was drafted. Now I am a loyal Spurs fan and will bleed silver and black long after Timmy is gone.

But, he isn't gone yet, and tonight isn't going to be his last game. Lets get game 6!

I played some college ball and went to NBA games in NYC back in the 50s. Went to the very first game with the Conquistadors in Oct. of 73 when the Spurs came to SA as a rent-a-team. As soon as the team was purchased by Drossos and Mccombs, I talked some non-basketball fans among my friends into going to games. Somewhere along the way in 1973- 1974 season, the Spurs started offering half-season tickets. After the announcement at a game, my best friend and I (we were drunk and having a ball at the game) went down and bought season tickets at floor level right behind the Spurs bench for $5.00 per ticket. Kept those seats for decades and have been a fan through good times and bad.

I claim the title of oldest Spurs fan on SpursTalk.

Well, i graduated in 1961 so I only had a couple of years in the 50s.:toast The NBA was such a small-time thing in those days. The coaches could get us seats at Madison Square Garden for any game we wanted to go to. I loved to watch Bob Cousy of the Celtics and worked on the behind the back dribble on a fast break and behind the back passes--but the coach wouldn't let us "showboat". Then my roommate started telling me about a guy from his hometown who was playing for the U. of Cincinnati (then for the Royals) and we'd drive all the way out there to see Oscar Robertson on a weekend.

I guess you could say I'm a hardcore basketball fan.

I remember one time shooting hoops in elementary school when we were old enough to finally reach the basket. This one kid kept yelling "Gervin" every time one of us made one. Didn't know what he was talking about but I eventually found out about the Ice Man and thought it was cool as shit that we had a professional team in SA. So I've been a fan since the late 70's. Although we could be eliminated tonight I can't help but think "we have FIVE championships"! FIVE motherfuckers!! Most teams can't say that. Got to see them hoist the trophy twice in '05 and '14. Always been a basketball fan. I was already a fan of the Admiral from the Dream Team and playing him in video games, but living in Europe I didn't have any way to watch the NBA.
Finally in 1999 I found a way to watch it on an encrypted French channel that was airing the games at night, and I watched every game of the Finals against NY at 2 or 3 am. I had heard about Tim Duncan before, but I really fell in love with the Twin Towers and was a fan ever since.

So yeah, I'm French, but no, I did not become a fan with Tony Parker.

Interesting I had become a spurs fan at the age of 10 because of David Robinson. At the age of 11 my family moved to NC and one of the biggest differences living in NC versus where I lived in Boston was the obsession of college sports. I remember one day flipping the local channels and seeing the pre-game show for a Wake Forest vs Alaska game I think it was. Keep in mind this was at the start of Duncan's sophomore year so he was still pretty much relatively unknown. I remember my dad telling me to change the channel since he thought both teams were crap. I remember replying to my dad at the time by saying "Wake Forest could be good they have this guy by the name of Tim Duncan whose 7ft he has to be good since he's really tall". My dad laughed and responded by saying "This Duncan guy is garbage since he doesn't play for a traditional power house school like UNC,Duke,Georgetown. If he was so great he would be playing at one of those schools" After that moment not knowing how great Duncan would be I immediately became a fan of his simply because I wanted to see him turn out great just so I could rub it in my dad's face. I started following him that year which was great because that was the year he broke out to super stardom. It was awesome just to see his rise at the time. Years later I still rub it in my dad's face about how wrong he was about Duncan.

I remember during the Spring of Duncan's junior year reading a local news paper in which they were speculating about whether or not Duncan would go to the NBA. Duncan was on the front cover of the news paper. I was sitting in a room with my younger brother and we both started speculating where Duncan would play in the NBA. My brother jokingly said "Duncan is going to play with the Spurs. He's going to team up with Robinson. Wouldn't it be cool to see 2 7fters play at the same time they would easily dominate." I laughed and put the newspaper down and said "Too bad it will never happen." A year later my brother and I both watched the lottery and there was a great moment of silence and shock when the Spurs got the number 1 pick. We both looked at each other and then laughed remembering what he said a year earlier about Duncan ending up as a Spur. The funny thing about it now is my brother was and still is a hardcore Knicks fan and at times he will tell me jokingly "I wish I never made that stupid prediction had I known what was going to happen in '99. I really jinxed myself by doing that."

:lol That's awesome. :lol

Haha awesome! It was destiny for Duncan to play with DRob, Pop, and the Spurs.

My first memories of being a Spurs fan were watching as a kid when we had Strickland and Robinson.. the days of holy water being thrown on our console TV to help get us past the Blazers.. Didn't work too well. I started to really follow the team after the lockout in 97 or whatever, when they stopped putting games on PPV. That was fucking bullshit, 50 bucks to watch the premier matchups SMH
