View Full Version : Using the cap space on top FAs won't make sense unless PATFO dumps Porker's contract

In order to free up cap space to sign any of the top FAs would require gutting the bench like last summer: dumping Patty/Diaw without anything in return ala Tiago. (Maybe get a pick for Patty)

Pop emphasized during his last interview that when the team won championships, they usually had a strong bench which wasn't the case against OKC. Thus, gutting the team for anyone not name Durant wouldn't make sense since the bench will be a bunch of minimim salary players.

I'm all for dumping Porker's contract to clear cap space for someone like Horford or Conley & dumping Patty/Diaw to upgrade the bench but Porky isn't going anywhere as long as Pop is at the helms.:rolleyes

One player I could see PATFO pursing is Marvin Williams who lost a lot of money in the postseason by shooting 27%(:lol) after having a solid regular season. He would be the perfect Diaw replacement & can play either forward positions which would give Pop flexiability when it comes to small-ball lineups. He is essentially a poor man's Paul Millsap which means he plays defense unlike D-Worst/Diaw.

Supposedly, PATFO were interested in his services back in 2014: http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/234131/Marvin-Williams-Receiving-Interest-From-Spurs-Heat-Wizards-Others

Maybe, his buddy Danny can get him to sign for 12 mill per or somewhere in that neighborhood.:toast

EDIT: Actually, after dumping Diaw the Spurs would have about 19 mill so they can also go after some like Courtney Lee for 7 mill per.

As far as the Room Exception, Pau has to be the #1 priority even if he isn't the perfect fit next to LMA b/c he would be worth close to 15 mill per if he wanted to get paid. Considering Marvin would get a good chunk of the minutes against small-ball lineups, I wouldn't mind Hibbert for the minimum to be the backup center. If D-Worst opts-in to eat regular season minutes w/ his buddy Hibbert then you have your 5 man rotation.

So we can now turn our focus to the backcourt/wings where there wiil be a lack of playmakers following Manu's departure. Trading Patty/Simmons for Darren Collison would give the bench a playmaker who can run the second unit.

Bertan+1st rd pick (3rd string PG) along w/ a couple of minimum guy would round out the roster.

Pau/Hibbert
LMA/Marvin/West
Kawhi/Kyle/Bertan
Danny/Lee
Porker/Collison/2016 pick

D-Worst hopefully is gone, and Fat Albert Hibbert is useless. Anyway to get rid of GluTony Porker would be a huge plus but that isn't happening.

21 million for the 2 frenchies is a killer. Diaw, Parker and Mills have to GTFO, too expensive for what they bring. And West simply sucks even though he's cheap, gotta get rid of those 4 at least.

Speaking of Frenchies...isnt Evan Fournier gonna be a FA?
I could see him playing for the Spurs
Young 6'7-8" 2 guard with respectable shooting numbers & he can handle the ball
Already turned down Orlandos extension offer & they dont currently have a coach

So pass up signing Al Horford because Parked is on the team?

More brilliance from the basement crew.
