I watch as Goddess waves to the last child leaving for the day. She turns to go back into her home or maybe it’s just a house to her now. She pauses and looks my way but I know she can’t see me through the fence and bushes. I’ve ventured out of my hideaway which I’ve started calling, “Rusty Bucket”. It’s my home. At least for the days and even sometimes the nights.
Today I’ve crept up to the back of the fence…as close to her as I’ve ever been. In my hand…a paper cutout I’ve created. It’s my best work yet. A silhouette of Goddess and myself. She’s standing over me and holding what I hope looks like a troll mace.
She goes inside. I take my chance. Reaching through the small space between the slats, I secure my devotion to her on the inside of the fence. Using my pocketknife as a makeshift thumbtack.
Tomorrow…she will see. Tomorrow…she will realize there is someone out there. Out here for her.
I think of stealing a hot air balloon so I can see her from above.
