View Full Version : Reminder: defensive specialists at pg are a myth

Not exactly a myth, they exist, but they're not good enough to win at the highest level. Why? Because the importance of a offensive threat at pg is way too important unless you have a highly effective two guard like harden.

The effect of a guard who can drive, shoot, and run pick and roll, is to create for the entire team, disrupt the defense, and tire out the opposing guard. A defensive pg can at best lower the shooting of one position and disrupt a few plays. It's a classic comparative analysis problem....your defence specialist will be useless against teams that don't have elite guards, whereas the chucker will be at least half useful against all teams.

A defensive 2 guard can usually guard both sg+pg. A defensive pg usually can't guard sg.

Now if your argument is you want a 6'6'' pg, well that's not your average pg and you should mention specific players. I mean sure iggy would be great. There are easily 30 guards I'd take over Parker and at best two or three are defensive specialists.

This is not a Parker thread, as he sucks on both sides.

If we tank,, and trade kawhi for picks, an offensive pg is way more easier to build around.

A defensive pg likely requires the benching or trading of Danny. Or requires a point forward (effectively creating greater burden on Kawhi, who is an average ball handler at best)

A back up level defensive specialist is a great idea to give opponents different looks during a game.

Tldr: you seriously suck if you'd rather take cojo over Lillard.

All that for a bad take at the end. Lillard is about to make four times as much as Joseph. I'll take Cory because he isn't about to be the highest-paid player ever.

A defensive minded PG is a damn good useful tool to have to buy a few minutes of respite for the rest of your team bc guys like Mills are either on or off and when they don't give you scoring they are surrendering leads and there are bench guards like Austin Rivers that just flat out own them. Cojo was great in that role. There are others, role players mostly like Ronnie Price. There are the Mario Chalmers of the world too, who had more of a defensive burden at PG for Miami, even though we saw that he could drive and be more aggressive like he was for the Grizz. There are others like the Marcus Smart, whose calling card is defense, though he's young enough to diversify and get better offensively too.

You don't need to start your defensive PG and some of them are good enough to guard a SG for a few minutes bc they ideally have size and strength to survive a few possessions.

Rondo is a cancer with no offensive game.

Elite two way PGs like Gary Payton don't come around too often anymore, though. If we did somehow land Durant, I'd say he could be our PG... the small guys are too easy to pick on on the other end.

I meant regardless of money. The fact that one is a max salary and the other is backup shows that NBA FO agree with what skils are important in a team.

Rondo is a nice player. But one championship on the backs of 3 HOF is like giving parker full credit for 2007. The fact that rondo has done shit since is pretty good evidence that a point guard who can't shoot is a big liability?

I mean at least throw Gary payton at me for fucks sake.

We need the reincarnation of Dennis Johnson

Will be interesting to see what, if anything, changes over the summer and by the trade deadline next season

It's that because my point was stunningly obvious? Do you disagree? Or is there an internal contradiction in my post? You were chosen as "best new poster" multiple times, act like it!

I agree with the premise that a defensive specialist at PG starting next to Danny isn't a good idea. As bad as Parker was, he was still enough of an offensive threat to keep things running most of the time. Cory Joseph in particular seems to stall out the offense when he has the ball, though that might be coach's orders. A lineup of Joseph/Green/Kawhi/LMA/Duncan would have a very hard time scoring.

So yes, an offense-first PG would complement the rest of the starting lineup better. Prime Parker would actually be ideal but he's lost too many steps to be relied upon in that role.

Rondo averaged like 3ppg 4rpg and 4apg on 32% shooting in 2008 :lol

Nando De Culo could've won a championship on that team as starting PG

Ronda stopped playing defense 5 years ago.

So that leaves: CP3, Wall, Conley, Rubio, Dellevedova, Hill, Beverley, & Joseph

If by 'like', you mean 11 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals on 49% shooting. He went up to 7 assists per game in the playoffs.

Get a defensive PG that can hit 3's. It will open up the court for LMA and Kawhi.

Heck, it may be sacrilegious to say it around here but I'd rather pay Parker $12.5 to be a PG off the bench and have another $17.5 to spend than paying Lillard around the $30 he's going to make once he's All NBA, even though he's a traffic cone defensively ... tries more than he used to.
