We actually won the war against the then-recognized state of Iraq (i.e., Saddam's regime). What we "lost" was the occupation of the post-Saddam Iraq because you can't win a civil war when you're the third-party stuck in the middle... that's a war lost before it has begun.

So Assad gives a rah-rah speech and you come with this shit. Palmyra is the last stop to Damascus and it took them years and the Russian military to get it back. This is pretty ignorant and dumbed down. Ostensibly it was about getting to the Panamanian banks that were being used to launder the Andean cartels money. The whole drug was was about US capital going south. We got the it back too.
