Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys Remain Nation’s Favorite NFL Teams, According to Harris Poll
U.S. adults who follow pro football pick the New England Patriots to win the Super Bowl in January

Once again this year, the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys remain no.1 and no. 2 respectively in the annual Harris Poll of the nation’s favorite professional football teams, among US adults who follow pro football. Support for the Cowboys remains the same, while the Packers support has slipped a bit from last year. Rounding out the top five teams are the New England Patriots and both Pennsylvania teams: the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles.

These are the results of a nationwide survey conducted online by Harris Interactive® between September 6 and 12, 2005 among 2,242 U.S. adults, of whom 1,135 follow professional football.

Other results from this year’s poll include:

The team making the biggest move up the list from last year to this year is the Pittsburgh Steelers (up seven percentage points from 2004). Moving in the opposite direction, the New York Giants dropped four percentage points from last year’s list.
There are also strong regional favorites. For the East, the Pittsburgh Steelers are no. 1 while Green Bay tops the list for those in the Midwest. For the South, the Cowboys come out on top and in the West, the San Francisco 49ers are the favorite team.
The percentage of those who have said they follow professional football over the years has remained stable at about half of adults overall (49% this year),
Men (61%) may be more likely to follow professional football than women (38%).
There is an interesting age break in those who follow professional football, as well. Echo Boomers (aged 18 to 27) are less likely to follow the game (40%) when compared to Generation Xers (aged 28 to 39) (50%), Baby Boomers (aged 40 to 58) (52%) and Matures (aged 59 and over) (51%).
This year Harris Interactive also asked, regardless of their favorite team, which team they think will win the Super Bowl in January. One-third (33%) of those who follow professional football believe the New England Patriots will do it again, while 13 percent say the Colts will win the Super Bowl; and 12 percent believe the Eagles will win. When looking at the nation’s two favorite teams, only four percent say the Green Bay Packers will win the Super Bowl while three percent say the Dallas Cowboys will win. And there are always die-hard fans, as each of the 32 NFL teams is named as a potential Super Bowl winner.
