Seahawks' missed FG sends Redskins into OT, win
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) -- Josh Brown raised both hands in victory after his kick on the last play of regulation -- until the ball hit the left upright. :lol
In overtime, Nick Novak ran toward the bench and pumped his right fist after his kick was on the way, but his celebration wasn't premature. The rookie's 39-yard field goal 5:31 into overtime gave the Washington Redskins a 20-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. :elephant It was over when ...
rookie Nick Novak kicked a 39-yard field goal 5:31 into overtime.
Game ball goes to ...
Novak, playing because of an injury to John Hall. His first NFL attempt Sunday was blocked, but made a 40-yarder late in the third quarter. He actually had to kick the overtime winner twice because the Redskins were called for delay of game on the first try.
The Redskins are 3-0 for the first time since 1991, the season they won their last Super Bowl. :smokin Mark Brunell hit unlikely targets Robert Royal and Mike Sellers for touchdowns, and Washington survived Seattle's late rally -- including the kick that came inches from winning it.
The Seahawks (2-2) tied the game on Darrell Jackson's 6-yard catch with 1:23 remaining. They got the ball back on Kelly Herndon's interception on a pass deflected off the outstretched fingertips of Clinton Portis, the only turnover of the game. Three plays later, Brown hit the upright from 47 yards.
The Redskins won the toss at the start of overtime and drove 55 yards. Santana Moss, who caught the two touchdown passes in the fourth-quarter comeback victory over Dallas two weeks ago, snagged a 30-yard reception that put Washington into position for Novak, who had never attempted a field goal in the NFL until Sunday. The Redskins converted three third-and-long situations in their winning drive, including an 18-yard scramble by Brunell on third-and-9.
Novak, playing because of an injury to John Hall, didn't try a field goal in his first game against Dallas. His first NFL attempt Sunday was blocked. He also made a 40-yarder late in the third quarter to give the Redskins a 17-10 lead. He actually had to kick the winner twice because the Redskins were called for delay of game on the first try.
Brunell completed 20 of 36 passes for 226 yards. Moss caught six passes for 87 yards, and Portis ran 25 times for 90 yards.
Hasselbeck was 26-for-38 for 242 yards for the Seahawks. Bobby Engram caught nine passes for 106 yards, and Shaun Alexander, throttled for most of the game, came alive late to run for 98 yards on 20 carries, including a 3-yard touchdown run that cut the Redskins' lead to 14-10 in the third quarter.
Trailing 17-10, the Seahawks started a drive at their 9 with 7:42 remaining. They converted a fourth-and-1 at their 35 when Hasselbeck scrambled 10 yards for the first down. Hasselbeck later scrambled 6 yards to the 6, then hit Jackson for the touchdown to tie the game.
The Redskins had drives of 15, 12 and 16 plays in the first half. They scored only seven points, but the 21:57-to-8:03 domination in time of possession wore down the Seahawks' defense and kept Alexander and the rest of the Seattle offense watching from the sideline.
Leading 7-3 at halftime, the Redskins opened the second half with a 62-yard drive, aided by a 29-yard pass interference penalty on Michael Boulware that was heavily disputed by the Seahawks. Brunell hit Sellers for a 4-yard touchdown on the next play, giving the former CFL player his first NFL touchdown since 2001.

Well done Jimbo. Enjoy this.
Worst 3-0 team in NFL history. They look terrible in all three games, but have a few lucky breaks.
Two desperation passes against Dallas. Field goal off the uprights against Seattle. Three straight false start penalties against Chicago. They should be 0-3.
But, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good - which is good for Washington, because they're awful.

Yow. Can't say any of the wins were impressive, but gotta take them.
The only difference between this year and last is that the offense has a bare minimum level of competency.
The next two games (@Denver, @KC) should say a lot about how real they are.

Joe Gibbs is lame.
It's still 3-0, and they're still leading the division - they're just such a bad 3-0 team. I'm not saying this as a Cowboys homer, because the Cowboys are sucking too. Washington's record is so much better than they are, though.
Regardless, like you said - 3-0 is 3-0.

The 52 points scored by the Skins is the most points scored since, dare I say, Nove 1991.
What is so special about 1991, you ask?
That is the last year the Redskins won the Super Bowl.
I am thinking Joe Thiesman was right now, when he picked the Redskins to win the Super Bowl in the preseason. I thought he was crazy and just being a homer, but this team is looking better every week, and they look just as good as any NFC team IMO..
They have a huge test this week at the Giants.

The AFC West is pretty strong too. Isn't it ironic that the two toughest divisions play interconference this year? All the WildCards would probably come from both divisions if the interconference play was different.
For the Skins to make it to the playoffs, they will need to go at least 5-3 the second half. I am hoping they go 6-2.

The Redskins' opponents thus far, have a record of 37-25. :smokin That is the toughest schedule in the league by far. They have played 4 division leaders, and are 2-2 in those games.
I see at worst a 5-3 record to finish out the season, which will net them a playoff berth.
The key game will be against Dallas at home. If Wash wins that, they will be almost assured a spot.
Washington's remaining games are against teams with a 34-31 record...slightly easier than the 1st half of the season.

lol
the "refs" will be at fault this week Im sure.
Hell of a game by Chris Simms
And By the way, thanks to Clinton Portis for finally living up to the FANTASY hype.
Also, wtf is up with Ladell Betts getting all the carries damn near in the 4th over Portis?
Isn't Portis the 8 million dollar man thats supposed to do that Gibbs??!?!? It is was the Skins fault for not playing defense and being offsides to begin with, but there is no way in hell that conversion was good when his elbow was down way before the line.

why even have replay if they do not even look at it?????
It was not even close to a 2 pt conversion....the elbow was down and the ball was 1 ft from the goal....
FUCK THIS SHIT!!!

Head lineman made the initial call. He was right there! You weren't. Not enough evidence to overturn it. Put it in the books! :lol

You couldn't see the BALL, Jim. No vision, no overturn. It's the 'Skins own fault anyway, for going offsides on the kick attempt. If not for that, we'd be running to get our OT beverages.

You were looking at his left elbow Manny. Ball was in the right hand. Head lineman saw it and made the call. Good call!

Hook, the endzone camera showed his right elbow being down well before the line. The ball was behind that elbow, so there was no way it could have crossed the plain. It was a bad call anyway you spin it, and I understand why the refs upstairs didn't overturn it, but it was a bad call none the less.

What camera were you looking at Manny?????? It clearly showed his left elbow down. Not his right elbow. You couldn't even see the ball in the replay. The ball was in his right hand. You're wrong......take off the homer glasses!

Chris Simms? Seriously... CHRIS SIMMS? Looks like the 'Skins honeymoon is over... 6-10, here comes the Redskins!
He was on his back, and the left elbow was facing the camera. There is no way you overturn that call. You couldn't tell a single thing from it.

Dude you guys not see the RIGHT elbow from the ENDZONE camerra? Even the guys in the booth agreed that it wasn't an actual score!
Everything I saw was not enough to overturn it. Not saying he did or didn't get in - just saying it has to be indisputable. If he had been called down outside, there wouldn't have been enough evidence to turn it the other way.

Alstott's elbow was down.
But I was more disappointed with the last series. There was plenty of time to get a first down and move the chains. I thought Brunell pressed a little on 3rd and 4th down.

Dan Patrick and Michael Irvin both said that Washington won the game and got screwed...anyone with a brain saw that it was a HORRIBLE call.
But fuckit...on to Oakland this week.

Does an elbow even count as someone being down?
Horry For 3!

If the elbow was down or not, they didn't overturn it. Game over. Who cares, move along to the next game. That game is over with.

Yes, the Redskins got FUCKED...
but do you know how BIG the balls would have had to been on the ref to overturn that call in tampa?
it wasn't gonna happen.
we had a minute to go down the field. the Skins failed.
Tampa was the better team on Sunday.
But the Skins are for real, cuz I know tampa is damn good, and that was without our starting DT Griffin or starting SS Taylor.
Be afraid NFL.
The REDSKINS are coming...
i'm still thinking 9-7 or hopefully, 10-6...we shall see...
and in the playoffs?
i just want a shot at either Tampa or Carolina...those are the two best teams in the NFC.
AFC is pittsburgh vs indy...

Let see, two out of three against Philly, the Pokes, and NY. Take three out of four against Ari, Stl, Oak, and SD. And that would be 10-6.
Just had to share something. I love the Redskins and I thought I loved the "Hail to the Redskins" song but after my experience at Hollywood Billiards Sunday, I'm not so sure anymore. It was my first time there for NFL games and needless to say, it gets rowdy. Everytime the Skins would score a touchdown, the Washington corner of the Sports Bar would sing "Hail to the Redskins." I can't say I joined in. I mean, maybe once it's cool. Twice is a little much. The third and fourth renditions are irritating as hell.
There was this one Jets Fan, who happened to be pissed off because the Jets just got their azz whupped, was the most irritated by the song. He was a pretty big dude, kinda looked South American.
He came over and shouted, "The Redskins have a chinamen's chance of making it the Bowl. You guys are going to be watching the game from the same place I'll be watching, at home."
There was this one Redskins fan wearing a Theismann Jersey who didn't appreciate the smack and yelled, "Aren't you watching the wrong t.v?"
Then the Jets Fan started getting pissed and fired back with, "You better watch it or I'll go L.T. on your azz. :lol"
After the L.T. crack, the whole Redskins corner got quiet. Anyway, I found the whole incident amusing as hell. I will have to go back next week and see how it is early in the morning.
Bottom line, the indoor version of "Hail to the Redskins" should not be sung more than twice a game, imo.

i can wholeheartedly agree with this.
once, after a victory, is more than sufficient if not at the actual game. :tu
