Ive watched his highlight reels, and all I see is a shoot first PG. I didnt see any passing skills nor setting up teammates with assists. Todays NBA :depressed

Which is why he was one of only two freshmen last year to put up the scoring rebounding and ASSIST numbers he did - other being Simmons.

Also, he was a freshman. A very malleable game and has the size to boot.

And maybe the highlight reels had a bias towards scoring and not assists?

Funny thing about highlight reels, isn't it?

He averaged more rebounds than his lottery pick big teammate. He had the 3RE highest floater percentage I believe.. and he works best in the open court, very creative instinctual player. He isn't afraid to shoot, but he's more of an attacker and would probably be the best passer on the team if he played.

This scouting video lists a strength as "Playmaking Potential." The segment on his passing starts at about 4:10.

Of all of our youngest guys the only true passer is Kyle, like Bobo. But Dejonte is probably fine for a 6th man role at least.
His game was compare to Jamal Crawford. He's more of a SG. But he's so young still. Definitely the scoring is more instinctual than the passing.

After watching some video's of Dejounte....he likes to go to the rim a lot....that's a good thing but how is his outside jumper?

Needs work. The good thing is that the Spurs are stacked at that coach position.

hes a shitty traditional pg. he's a westbrook with a broke ft game. Only in the nba could you be a "pg" averaging 4A/3TO a game shooting 66%FT and 28%3. He's a project.

Freshman year.

The stocktons and Kidds of the NBA are gone. Accept it.

The only pass first players in the league are bums that can't score like Rondo, Rubio, and fathead. All three of them are cancers.

His method of getting to the rim reminds me of that unbalanced guy with the Grizzlies. The one that blew loving caresses into Lebron's ear.
Forward then fluid shifts laterally. Dangerous stuff... You can't teach that.

If you had to choose between a PG who is a great scorer with average passing skills or a great passer with no scoring instincts, you definitely take the former. The Spurs need a penetrating threat at the PG position. Parker didn't have a jump shot when he first started but his penetration skills made up for a lot of those deficiencies. If he can get to the rim then he has an opportunity to create for others. A jump shot can be coached but scoring instincts can't be coached no matter how hard you try.

Exactly. He has unique instincts on getting to the rim like a leftie, like Manu, but without the direct Eurostep. He's more fluidly shifty in his lateral movements and they're more compact.
He has tools that could make him pretty special in a few years, should he work hard enough to do it.

By that, I mean adding a reliable jump shot to the repertoire.

Pass-first PGs are probably the most overrated players in basketball, stylistically, tbh:lol..only "scoring SF" is worse..

In modern NBA history, PGs that play a top 2-3 role on championship teams are always big-time scorers with a shooting mentality, other than Magic..

-Kyrie Irving
-Steph Curry
-Tony Parker
-Chauncey Billups
-Isiah Thomas (good passer, but always led is team in FGAs IIRC)

You want an old-school PG? Here's one that didn't get drafted. I don't know if he's quick/athletic enough to play in the NBA, but he can flat-ass run the PnR. I started watching him in the NCAA Tourney his freshman year, and he was tough as nails. He would have taken a partially-guaranteed deal, so it wouldn't have cost the Spurs much to have a look at him. He just signed a deal to play summer ball for Toronto, but I think that means he's still fair game for the season. I don't think he'll turn out like Isiah Thomas did at the last pick of the draft, but I do think he could be a damned good backup PG. If this kid doesn't have a place in today's NBA, maybe the old-school PG is a thing of the past anyway.

If you didn't see him play last year, this is from his Draft Express file, and it's pretty accurate:
"A steady hand at the point guard position, VanVleet has shown he can be a coach on the floor by being the conductor of an efficient offense, while averaging a solid 16.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 7.6 assists per 40 minutes. He never gets sped up with the ball and doesn't get fazed by ball pressure or double teams. He keeps the offense flowing and his 7.03 pure point rating is fourth best among all prospects in our top 100. He doesn't turn the ball over by trying to make highlight reel passes, but he takes care of the ball and has displayed great vision and feel for the game as a creator for his teammates.

VanVleet is a pick and roll maestro, with 58% of his total possessions logged by Synergy Sports Technology derived from him running the pick and roll. He's an expert at using the ball-screen to create space to get inside the arc to make play, often by looking to get his teammates into space to shoot by delivering accurate, on point passes to the roll man, cutters or spot-up shooters. He turns the ball over on just 5.9% of pick and roll possessions and is never rattled no matter what level of pressure the defense throws at him. With the NBA being such a ball-screen heavy offense, VanVleet certainly has the chops to create some points from this play type while he is on the floor."

You're right. But they can make good backups. You need a guy who can just be steady and not lose ground, and who won't collapse under pressure coming off the bench. A lot of bench PG's are flashy, when everything is going their way, but they go to shit under pressure. That's why they're backups. But what good are they, if you can't depend on them when you need them most?

LOL... the guy whose name you can't remember? And who you remember best for blowing in Bron's ear? He's Lance Stephenson, and he has his moments. He had one good season - "coincidentally" in a contract year. I know you're just talking about the way he handles the ball, but it's hard for me to see a comparison to Lance Stephenson as a good thing.

Lol- yeah. I agree, but I just speak on the way he moves in traffic. It's very fluidly shifty, like Stephenson (TY). It's those kind of movements that cannot be taught. You either got that, or you don't and he does. Now he needs more tools in the shed to be developed.

I think a lot of people are missing the immediate importance of just having a defensive PG. I am fine if that is all he provides his first season. Love his potential offensively and all but just having some length to put on the Westbrooks and Currys is enough for year one. Just like when Kawhi came in you do the D first and maybe hit some 3s with Chip's coaching and we're all good.

agree on the premise, but his defense doesn't seem that great when you watch his DraftExpress "weaknesses" video

Well, length and quickness are key tools in defense (especially length) and I see those. He can be a good defender from what I see.

i wouldn't read to much into his offence, it is about to get rewritten from scratch. What matters is that he has all the physical tools to become great. He is also advertised as a good worker, so that's also great.

If he doesn't play with LeBron he doesn't win that championship. Noteworthy that the last championship team's have featured heavily playmaking forwards. LeBron is a freak of nature and HoF talent, but Draymond as a playmaker is super important to the GSW and the last time we won it, Bobo was basically our distributor. I guess the point is If you don't have a PG that does a good job getting the ball to others, you better have a forward who is a good damn playmaker and accumulates those assists distributing the basketball.

What's wrong with a scoring SF? Carmelo and Durant come to mind.

In the Spurs case, I would think you'd want a passing specialist who won't "freeze out" Kawhi...
