It is a disaster...its what I been saying for years now. Something has to change in the FO right now...I pray to God Buss family sells the Lakers or something changes dramatically. We are going down the Oakland Raider road of a team that was once glorious and dog shit now.

It's one thing if you dont wanna sign with them but to not grant an interview?

Look, I have been saying this for years. Between the Kobe factor and inept management from the Buss family and flat out bad GM'ng from Mitch, LA has gone through rock bottom.

They are refusing to realize the NBA landscape has changed. The Kobe excuse is gone now; yet, the keep whiffing and getting embarrassed because they want to puff out their chest and act like player will just choose LA.

You not only never had FA turn LA down before (especially when LA had money) but FA left LA and left money on the table to get out (Dwight & Pau). That was on Kobe.

But with the globalisation of the NBA, massive TV exposure & a very punitive luxury tax, the playing field is now even. LMA choose SA over LA. KD got famous in OKC. It doesn't matter where you play if you are a star; you will get rich and famous if you want to.

It's now about how good is your roster and can you compete today and money. LA has the money, but they have no real proven talent, have missed the playoffs for 4 years in a row (and will again for another 2-4 years probably) and have an ownership group that is bickering and embarrassing themselves when they do get an audience in FA.

They have to adjust and embrace the fact they aren't LA of old. It's not just LA either; big markets only win out if all else is equal (money and talent on roster).

But if they keep promising the world and putting themselves out there with no self-awareness, they will continue to be embarrassed. They need to just smartly rebuild. There's nothing wrong with doing due diligence on KD, etc..that is their job. But don't spout off about being LA essentially - it no longer matters.

Like I told Laker fans for years now, they don't have a choice :lol. LA is going to luck into doing the right thing (sucking for years - playoff drought spanning 6-8 years including this current streak). They are going to suck for a few more years but not because they planned to.

They might mess it up though by maxing out guys like Parson's too, but most guys will turn them down until the young talent shows they are good. They need to nail the development and sign only smart FA's (unless they get a star somehow). Possibly make sound trades too.

Actually best case scenario is tank and get their top-3 in 2017. They do have to give up their 2018 pick, but not their next first. If they finish out of the top-3 in 2017, they have to give up their first in both '17 and '19.

Which is a long-winded way of saying...

Jim "Mr. Fucking Know-it-all" Buss, is useless as an owner. Instead of being like his dad, and surrounding himself with intelligent basketball minds, he tries to call all the shots, while alienating the very people his dad built a legacy around. I hate the Lakers organization with a passion, but I do have respect for the greatness over the years.

I will enjoy this downturn while it lasts, which might be a while if Buss refuses to sell.......but then again, it is kind of hard to sign away your franchise while your head is stuck deep up your own ass.

He's probably going to command $14 mil a year, 3-4 yrs and the Lakers aren't done spending those dollars on non impact players. I'd rather have them use it on pieces that can actually make an impact and help bring a winning culture. There's no rush to win even talk playoffs, but damn I hope they bring a semblance of leadership in this team.

Welp, 4 year 65M for a guy who rode the bench last year. I mean, that is what is going on in this market.

It's still a good thing for next season and then still reasonable trade piece if he does well. But 4 years is rough. If he doesn't perform and does not prove to be a starter, that will suck.

But I get the logic. If he can play well a starting C for 15-17M is not terrible moving forward.

Back in 2012, I wrote about Lakers exceptionalism, the idea that the rules of the NBA don't apply to the most famous basketball team in the world. I wrote that as the Lakers sat teetering on the edge of the cliff of irrelevance. They'd fired Mike Brown five games into the season, abandoning an offensive system he just installed. They'd snubbed Phil Jackson after dangling the job in front of his nose. They'd bought into the idea that Dwight Howard (coming off back surgery) and Steve Nash (almost 40 years old) would team with Kobe Bryant to lead the Lakers back to the NBA Finals.

Instead, Nash's career quickly unraveled, Howard bolted and Bryant got old. The Lakers have had the worst three-year stretch in the franchise's history since then.

Under Jim Buss, the Lakers shoot airball after airball in free agency. The Jim Buss regime failed to keep Howard, failed to lure LeBron James, failed to lure Carmelo Anthony. Kevin Ding reports that recently Buss claimed the Lakers would get Kevin Durant this summer and Russell Westbrook in a year. Durant refused to even take a meeting with the Lakers this week.

It wasn't just Durant: DeMar DeRozan, who grew up in L.A. idolizing Kobe, quickly inked a hefty deal to stay in Toronto. He told Bruce Arthur of the Toronto Star why he didn't consider the Lakers.

"And for me, to be second all-time scoring, the most wins as a Raptor, that's something — you might not see it now, but that's a legacy. Unless you go there and win seven championships, there's no overshadowing who played (with the Lakers) for 20 years. That's that. My whole mindset has always been, what can I do here that'll separate me from others? And maybe someday, somebody will say, I want to try to pass DeMar. I want to do what DeMar did."

There's no glory in being a Laker right now. In Los Angeles you compete against the ghosts of the past. In their current state, the Lakers are in no position to contend for titles. So, as DeMar indicates, what's the point? You'll be a hero to no one. There's no upside for a young star -- even one with deep L.A. roots -- to join the Lakers.

Buss claimed the Lakers would land Durant and Westbrook just a few months ago. Yet in the first hours of July 1, one of the first major deals reported was the Lakers handing Timofey Mozgov some $64 million over four years. The same Mozgov who played just 17 minutes per game last season. The same Mozgov who was pushed out of the Cavaliers' rotation in favor of Channing Frye and Tristan Thompson. Mozgov, who played just 76 minutes in the entire 21-game Cleveland postseason run and who turns 30 this month (he's eight months younger than Dwight). The same Mozgov who was not among SBNation.com's top-50 free agents or our top-10 free agent centers.

Timofey Mozgov. $16 million per season. Seventeen percent of the salary cap for a 30-year-old career backup center.

This is not the behavior of a team that considers itself exceptional.

The Lakers considered themselves exceptional for so long that, for a time, they seemed to forget that horrible teams don't get LeBrons, Melos or Durants. They get Mozgovs, and they pay through the nose for the opportunity. The Lakers know now. The Lakers have found their footing, and they are getting comfortable. They are making the moves of a losing franchise, a derelict and moribund team just hoping to graduate from god-awful to mediocre.

The Lakers have made the most New York Knicks move possible -- well, the most New York Knicks move since the Lakers traded multiple firsts for Nash (they still owe a pick on that), or since the Knicks traded picks for Andrea Bargnani -- at a time in which the Lakers' leader himself thought the brain trust would be preparing to pepper Kevin Durant with talk of Hollywood and courtside celebrities and warm winters.

Reports suggest the Lakers didn't even reach out to Al Horford or Hassan Whiteside when the clock struck midnight because L.A. considered landing those higher-tier centers unlikely. And so, Mozgov. This is wholly rational for a team in the Lakers' position, coming off a 17-win season that followed a 21-win season that followed a 27-win season. Teams that win 26 percent of their games over three full seasons sure as hell don't get LeBrons, Melos or Durants. They don't even get Horfords or Whitesides. They get Mozgovs.

Make fun of this deal all you want, but the Lakers have finally reached the last stage of grief after mourning the death of their exceptionalism for so long. With Mozgov, the Lakers have accepted their fate. Applaud them on their progress. Only now can the Lakers come back as strong as ever. Only now can the Lakers be great again.

Durbeta is meeting with the Spurs, Clippers and Celtics, yet he snubbed the Lakers. :downspin: it all you want, Fernando, but that shit has to sting. :lol

:lol

No, it doesn't sting in the least. Let me put it into perspective as I see it. I'm an already rich NBA player. I can get the most money from my current team. If I leave, I don't get the 5th year, costing me millions. What's my incentives to leave? Well, for one I want to goto a team that can win. If I go there, now they are contenders. I don't necessarily need the 5th year, I'm a veteran, I want to goto the best place I can to win. Why would I sign with a non playoff team? At best, I make them a 1 and done playoff team...maybe?

It made no sense for KD or any other big name to consider the Lakers as currently constructed. Unlike most Laker fans, I'm cool with it. I want to see kids grow and see us slowly build the roster.
