And lost to the Kentucky Derby. What's your point?

In fairness...the MLB all-star game actually means something. It decides home field advantage in the WS (I think that's stupid btw). NBA and NFL all star games are glorified scoring exhibitions with 0 defense played. Everybody already knows this...that's why the don't watch IMO. And the baseball all-star game almost lost to the NFL draft. That's pathetic. Only beat it by 380,000 viewers. AND the all star game was on FOX. The draft was on ESPN/NFL network.

I've said it many times...If I have to decide baseball or soccer....I'm going baseball 10 times outta 10. I don't like either one though.

BTW...do you realize the shit storm that would have came down your way if women's gymnastics would have beat the all-star game? It was close. Only 130,000 viewers difference.

Nothing in any other sport beats fooooooooooobawww unless it's a semi-final/championship game.

The NFL draft (6.2 million) viewers handedly beat the Spurs-Thunder Game 6 (5.5 million).

Is that "pathetic?"

So :lol basketball now?

Not really. It just illustrates what I've been saying for years about the US's sporting taste. "We" only tune in when there's a superstar to watch, a storyline to watch, or a nation to support. Fooobaw is really the only sport that "captivates" the country anymore, and can draw no matter who is playing and doesn't need storylines or stars to carry it.

And I find that somewhat sad.

You make the NFL and NBA all star games determine who gets home field/court in the Finals/Super Bowl and they blow the MLB's all star game's rating outta the water. You'll agree with that, right?

They sure as fuck wouldn't be close to women's gymnastics.

The MLB All star beat the NBA AS Game in the ratings even prior to that rule.

Basketball isn't as relevant in the US as you think it is. Lebron is relevant. Jordan was/is relevant. Curry somewhat. Lakers somewhat. We saw how ratings dip below "Women's Gymnastics levels" when the Spurs play a non-Lebron team in the Finals (2007 Cavs aside).

What gets higher ratings?

Week 1 Alabama vs. USC college football or the highest rated World Series game?

The highest regular season rated college football ever on Fox drew 7.5 million viewers. SEC games average about a 3.4 rating on CBS (5.5 million viewers).

Highest rated World Series Game of the past few years was the Game 7 Giants/Royals at 24 million, which is only 6 million below this year's NBA Finals Game 7 featuring Lebron, Curry, a 3-1 comeback vs. a 73 win team, and the curse story line.

The NBA needs a perfect storm to really draw, which is why the powers-that-be love nothing more when the Spurs are kept out of the Finals, and they love when Lebron is in the Finals. The Giants vs. Royals is pretty much the equivalent of Spurs vs. the Pacers. Spurs vs. the Pacers would be lucky to average more than 7 million.

I'm not shitting on the NBA, but it just shows how the typical US sports fan doesn't care about sports unless there's something "flashy" (a star, storyline) involved.

What does appeal to popularity prove? Billions of people chant like idiots and are seemingly entertained by a sport that ends in a 0-0 tie more than any sport reasonably should, but you nor I "don't get" the fascination.

Baseball ratings are fine. It crushes it regionally. Appealing to World Series ratings to demonstrate "baseball is dying" makes as much sense as someone appealing to NBA Finals ratings when the Spurs and Pistons or Nets were drawing 6-8 million viewers.

If the MLB gets its dream "Curry vs, Lebron matchup," which would be the Cubs vs. the Red Sox (Ortiz's last season), it should easily beat the NBA Finals.

Spurs vs Pistons/Nets is not the norm. I can understand dips/lows in the ratings when "Small market" franchises are involved.

This is the norm for the world series. A steady decline over the past 30 years....1/2 the viewers today than in the mid 80s. I don't know off the top of my head who played in those "spikes" like in 04 or 09. I'd guess the Yankees or Red Sox though. A team with a huge market.

Checking the runner is an important move. If the Yankees did it better, Dave Roberts doesn't steal that base, which eventually lead to the 0-3 Yankee collapse. Pitching changes are as well.

I don't have ADD, so I don't need "stuff moving around" to be entertained. But I won't suffer excessive commercials and over bearing referee influence, and no sports league on Earth is "better" in those areas than the National FOOOOBAAAWWW League.

WP’s Fred Bowen counted the ads in a 2014 NFL game and had seen an astounding 152 advertisements during the game. 152; that was more ads than plays from scrimmage. Update for 2015: the early returns on the first few weeks of the season show a huge up-tick in penalties

For comparison, MLB broadcast has 85 commercials and an NBA broadcast has 90 commercials.

You can't compare 80's to today. Less channels in the 80's. Less entertainment options. Only football has been immune.

Yes, the uptick in '09 was due the Yankees.

There isn't a "Perfect Sport". All these "sports" have problems. NFL has too many commercials, MLB has too many pitching changes, Soccer has 0-0 tie games. And that's just scratching the surface of the things wrong with those sports.

Even with all those commercial breaks in the NFL...that sport still DOMINATES the ratings. Why is that? Obviously they're doing something right. Why does a Seahawks/Raiders/Buccaneers/Jaguars fan(s) watch a Cowboys vs. Giants game early in the season?

I think it was the draw of something "free" and "American" in a time when (a lot) of people lost everything/job, money, home.

Because the NFL has a small supply of games, so every game is meaningful and is basically a playoff game.

The NFL are also brilliant marketers and have figured out how to promote each game as an "event." Fantasy football also plays a huge role here, as people watch to see how their fantasy players do instead of actually watching the game.

Like I said, I have no problem with football the sport. I don't have ADD, as I said, and one common complaint from people (usually soccer fans) trying to get into the NFL is that there are too many stoppages in play and they become bored because there's not "enough running around." Football is a slower paced sport, nothing wrong with that. I just despise the commercials and how so many penalties come down to judgement calls that are inconsistently called.

Totally agree. When you've got single elimination games like in the NFL that makes a huge difference. It's the reason why Game 7s get such a high rating. You know who will win based on that one game.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: today's NFL is to sports what Nickelback is to music, what Call of Duty is to video games, what Game of Thrones is to TV shows, and what Marvel is to movies. It's a generic watered-down product marketed as a Big Event towards the lowest common denominator. It's basically a giant advertisement.

Case in point: defense isn't allowed anymore because it doesn't jive with all the fantasy football leagues being shoved down our throats. Furthermore, the sheer amount of calls and no-calls that teams like the Patriots, Steelers and Broncos have received for decades would make David Stern blush at how obvious the rigging is.

I still watch the shit out of habit at this point, but nobody can tell me with a straight face that college football isn't the superior product. It's not even close, actually. Thanks to Goodell and Media, football is now the only sport where watching amateurs play is better than watching the pros.

Because Americans have a diseased gene pool that enamors them with violence. If the "attraction" were inherent to the "sport", then it would have spread to other populations. The Aussies and Euros would have mandated helmets in their equivalents by now. But it is uniquely American to crave "someone might be paralyzed or die" in 11 minutes of action that they waste 3+ hours waiting for the violence to play out on live TV.

It's not something knuckledraggers from Mississippi can understand.

Well, we're halfway there.

It feels like we've only just begun, but with the MLB All-Star game (read: Chicago Cubs-American League throwdown) on Tuesday night, the MLB is in mid-season form with the fall looming on the horizon.

And now, of all times, is the right time for a brief retrospective on this season's most inconsistent but entertaining happenings: bench-clearing brawls. We've had a few potential all-timers so far this year, and I think it's high time the hierarchy of face-punching and chest-shovery is set in stone.

Let's get started.

5. Osich goes back-to-back
Two nights in a row, Joey Osich zipped in high, inside fastballs at David Peralta, tagging him in the left arm.

Neither seemed to be intentional, but two's the limit, and after the second plunking, Peralta flipped his batter in a very "I'm about to beat your insides out" manner.

But no such beatdown came to pass, and after some mild, hubbub, the ensuing bench-clearing ended without incident. Womp womp.

Grade: C- for starting strong but ending with zero fireworks.

4. Jeff Francoeur enters his feelings
This was a weird one.

For whatever reason, Jeff Francoeur took exception to a pitch winged belt-high and inside by Hector Rondon late in a tilt against the Chicago Cubs this July.

There was likely no intent, as the game hung in the balance and hitting Francoeur would've put the go-ahead run on base.

But Francoeur didn't appreciate having the tower buzzed and, according to Cubs catch Willson Contreras, started talking after the pitch.

"I call a fastball in, and he doesn't appreciate that," Contreras said. "We're just trying to go in on him, and after that he starts talking to me."

Grade: C for a pitcher walking to protect his catcher, for a change.

3. The Bat Man Cometh
Back in May, Jose Abreu did a thing you don't often see during a bench-clearing situation: continue holding the bat as you walk at the pitcher.

Yeah, that's not, uh, ideal. And commentators quickly noted that Abreu probably should've dropped the lumber after Twins pitcher Trevor May nailed him with 97-mph heat during a White Sox blowout in May.

But Abreu held the bat, perhaps unconsciously, and while nothing came of the incident, he later said it was one of the more uncharacteristic moments of his career.

"I was out of character," Abreu said. "It was something in the game."

Grade: B- for speaking softly and carrying a big stick.

2. Manny at the mound
He's calmed down a bit from 2015's bean-a-palooza, but Yordano Ventura continues to exhibit historically low levels of chill when the mood so strikes him.

Back in June, the Royals pitcher provoked his most ridiculous bench-clearing to date, tagging Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado in the leg at Camden Yard.

The result was Machado rushing the mound and doing a rare thing: actually throwing a punch in a baseball brawl.

Grade: A- for vintage Yordano petulance and this guy's "I'm just here for the shrimp" fighting face.

"I don't know what to do with my hands."

1. Joey Bashed
This is it. The Mother of All Pearls. The Hope diamond of baseball brawls.

We may never witness a more perfect baseball punch than the Hammer of Thor Rougned Odor dropped onto Jose Bautista's jaw after a hard, low slide in May.

Bautista came in hot looking to break up a double play, and Odor wasn't having none of it, throwing a punch that was felt throughout the collective citizenry of Canada. The meme-ry that followed should be ensconced in a museum.

Honestly, baseball should be an egalitarian like Splits's favorite game, since it's the sport most consistent with that philosophy.

- It's the most racially diverse sport in the world relative to success. Yes, soccer is the most racially diverse sport in the world, but the only countries to really have success at the International level are white European countries and Latino countries. Meanwhile, the Dominicans (who are primarily of African descent) won a WBC, and Japan has won two. Venezuelans, who are light skinned Latinos, finished 3rd and produce some of the best players in the world.

- Height isn't a strict barrier to entry to becoming an elite player. The 5'5" Jose Altuve is the best American League player right now, and the 6'5" Kris Bryant is the best National League player (soccer is diverse in this aspect as well).

- All players will get a similar amount of chances to shine. Yes there's a batting order, but there's not a strict hierarchy (and egalitarians hate hierarchies) of roles that players are forced into. For example, you'll never see an offensive guard be the hero save for a few ultra rare cases. You'll never see a Bruce Bowen type player get 25 shots per game in an important playoff game. A soccer offense won't be built around a defensive back. But each player will get about 4 or 5 at bats, star player or not. You can't give all the at bats to Mike Trout.

- Player contracts are guaranteed!

- One of the safest sports.

Come home, Splits.

The Giants are one of the most historic franchises in a large and influential market. Giants-Royals is more like Rockets-Cavs, perhaps minus the star power. Maybe it's Sixers-Jazz/Blazers/Thunder/Spurs/Kings as an alternative.

And since you know that "solution" will never happen, you'll be able to keep complaining indefinitely.

And same with the chargers except your solution there is the owner leaving, knowing it's not happening. Congrats, you can continue to whine about them after every win and after every loss. Politically, you do the same shit by claiming to be in a 3rd party knowing damn well it's not happening. So you can bitch, whine, and moan no matter what happens.

Tbh I used to think ur bitter, whining persona is a shtick but I know it's your true nature. I don't have a reddit account, but I browse occasionally during the NFL season to see highlight gifs, and I stumbled upon your account making a typical whining comment. And of course, when I looked at your user history for a couple of minutes it was incessant whining again. About politics. Sports. And even :lol video games and how modern games have :cry alienated you :cry

You need help.

Clipper Nation (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=28500) you aren't a crochety old man because you think the NFL has gone down. Your a crochety old man because you're fucking miserable regarding virtually any topicYou are in a perpetual state of whining and you make sure you stay that way by clinging to impossible "solutions"...

Do we really need to get into baseball's problems? That's a long list too my friend.

:lol Bring in a pitcher to face a right handed batter
:lol Commercial break
:lol Bring in a pitcher to face the next left handed batter
:lol Commercial break
:lol Pitcher throws the ball to 1st base to check the runner
:lol Pitcher doesn't like the catcher's pitch selection
:lol Catcher goes out to the mound to talk about it
:lol Pitcher throws the ball back to 1st base
:lol Pitcher throws the ball back to 1st base again
:lol Manager comes out to the mound
:lol Commercial break
:lol Pitcher throws the ball back to 1st base again

15 minutes and absolutely nothing happened.

Yeah ur right. Watching constant backfield passes is way more fun. In fact, NBA needs to start allowing that as well. Let's also get rid of the shot clock while we are at it.

Adam Jones: no anthem protests in MLB because baseball is 'a white man’s sport'

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones says baseball players haven’t joined 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/colin-kaepernick) in his national anthem protest because they are concerned about losing their jobs.

In an interview with USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2016/09/12/adam-jones-orioles-colin-kaepernick-white-mans-sport/90260326/), Jones said: “Baseball is a white man’s sport.”

“We already have two strikes against us,” Jones told the newspaper, which noted that black players made up just 8% of major league rosters compared to 68% in the NFL (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/nfl). “So you might as well not kick yourself out of the game. In football, you can’t kick them out. You need those players. In baseball, they don’t need us.”
