Terribly sad obviously. But it was time...

Thank you Timmy for the last 19 years and for being the face of the greatest organization in sports. You've changed the Spurs organization forever, and we're forever grateful for that. You embodied what it meant to be a selfless leader and a consummate professional, and I'm looking forward to seeing your statue go up this Fall. Enjoy your retirement Legend, you deserve it. Cheers.

Typical Tim way to go out. He's a thinker and took his time and really thought about what this might mean. Sounds like he knew he could no longer contribute like he wanted to and I"m happy for him.

Thanks for being pretty much the team that I have loved since I really got into basketball.

Remember that? A few years ago it looked like all three of Tim, Manu and Pop were about to leave any time. We would be left with an aging Tony and some role players. Since then Kawhi happened, we got Aldridge, Pop decided to stay, and Manu is giving us one more year. I thought I would be devastated, but I'm just thankful. He not only made this franchise, but he left it in a great state.

Though he'll likely never read it, Tim has my heartfelt thanks for his nineteen years of absolute greatness and unparalleled leadership.

Spurs culture exists as much because of Tim as anything (no slight to Pop) and that culture should sustain fans for a while.

Don't sit around asking when the Spurs will find a Duncan replacement, though. They'll never find a Duncan replacement. Nobody will for a very long time because guys like that are, by definition, not replaceable.

We've been blessed to watch and root for one of the top 10 players in the history of the game; a man who earned the genuine respect of all of his peers and many who played before him. He did it with a quiet dignity and sportsmanship that few of his actual peers in accomplishment have ever mustered. No controversies, no embarrassments, no strife, and no selfishness.

He is a standard-bearer for the quality of an NBA career, but he is THE standard bearer for the quality of a star teammate.

It's a sad day for us and for the NBA as a whole, but it's been an absolute thrill to have a seat for the ride over the last 19 years.

Even though we all had an idea today was going to come it still hurts...#21 has meant so much to me throughout my life. I've literally been watching him since I was 10yrs old and my love of the game is solely because of him. #21 was truly a one of a kind player. He holds records that will never be broken and NEVER have any incidents off the court. The perfect athlete and role model. He sacrificed and did things not many athletes have done in order to allow the franchise and other teammates thrive. Whatever is best for the team. The Spurs organization is considered one of the best if not the best organizations in the nation if not the world..it's because of #21. He created the legacy and brought 5 banners to a small market and contended EVERY year he laced them up..There's nobody better than him in my eyes. Goodbye #21 the city of San Antonio will always love you.

None were more consistent and clutch than Tim.
Quiet but fiery leader.

I said this many times downstairs but back in 1999 I was telling ANYONE who would listen I would trade Shaq form him straight up. Everyone in L.A. said I was crazy ... but I knew his game would age better than O'neal.

One thing I always tell people about Tim is that he's one of the most clutch big men of all time. Most of them were chokers with the game on the line.

Not Shaq, Not Hakeem, Not D-Rob, Not Karl Malone, none of them were great in crunch time. I'd be interested to hear other people's thoughts on big men that were clutch.

I wont say that Hakeem was not clutch.
But he definitely was more clutch than Shaq/drob/Malone.
duncan wasnt even a 3 point shooter but could hit them in the clutch.
Or when he sucked at FT's he (unlike shaq) made them when they counted ....because shaq played hot potato with it late in games.

Thank you Tim. I have been a Spurs fan for 31 years and these were the 19 best by far. It's unbelievable rooting for a team that has a real shot at a title every single year for 19 years. I can't imagine that ever happening in the NBA again. Fifty wins every year except in 1999 when the team won at a 61 win pace. I know it has to kill Tim to walk away from the game that he worked at like no other and I hope he is involved in the league (and especially the Spurs) somehow in the future. Godspeed Tim, you're the greatest. :toast

Tim was like the WIRE.
It was tactical, at times methodical.
YOu had to pay attention to get his greatness.
some of it went over the common fan's heads.
But the true hoopers we all know how great he was.
HE didnt have the flashy moves of Hakeem or personality of Shaq.
He had that bank shot, the flip shots the positional blocks not the Dwight howard volley ball spikes.

Best career for a big since Kareem.

Thanks for an amazing ride #21: Timmy GOAT Duncan. I did not become a spurs fan because of you but man did you win over me. Your teachings on and off the court have trascended my life: your heart, passion for the game, unselfishness, leadership, intelligence, sportsmanship and whatnot other qualities most athletes will never have. As someone here said, you were truly THE whole package. Spurs fans will miss you and it really pains me not being able to watch you anymore.

As much as I prepared for this for a couple of years now it hurts. Numbing. Being a native San Antonian and following the Spurs since I was a kid with Gervin, what he did to elevate this franchise is immeasurable beyond any other Spur ever. SA better throw a big celebration for him!
