People talk about San Antonio selling 58,000 plus seats and that was ok but not a sell out. Other teams have a whole year to market for there teams. San Antonio had to do it in 2 weeks.

Baton Rouge according to new orleans news station. Only 20,000 tickets have been sold. Thats the fact that the Saints are from New Orleans.

1. san antonio IS the 8th largest city in the US.
Just for informational purposes. Dallas is the 9th largest city in the US, right behind San Antonio. Here's the difference: The Dallas TV market is 7th in the US while San Antonio's is 37th. The Dallas market is three times the size of San Antonio, so the 8th largest thing might be misleading, since the NFL refers to San Antonio as a "small market" not a "small city".

That said, the New Orleans TV market was ranked 43rd, nearly a hundred thousand TV homes behind San Antonio, and SA does have a track record of enthusiastically supporting their team. The problems that New Orleans had before the hurricane won't actually help San Antonio's case.

that is exactly why tags does not want a team in San Antonio. The leauge already gets phenomanal support from San antonio for the cowboys. The average ratings of 22-25 on TV, that is really high.

I really believe our biggest problem is that the cowboys are so well supported in this area. if we hated the cowboys and everyone in this town was not in to football then it might be easier to convince Tags to move the team.

Dallas is combimed with Ft. Worth to creat a very large CMSA.

If San Antonio were given a CMSA, it'd be about 4.5 million and in the teens for tv market.

Take away Fort Worth and its metro area and metro Dallas is barely bigger than Metro San Antonio.

I think it all comes down to San Antonio's ability to sell Lux Boxes. I don't think we'll have problems finding the money to renovate the Dome to NFL standards, but we will have to find corporate sponsors to fill those Boxes. We have a couple of big players HQed here in SA (Valero, USAA, SBC, Clear Channel, Tesoro) and some others with a big presence (World Savings, Citi, soon to be WAMU and Toyota) - but it will take some of the smaller players (like a ScooterStore, which has/had a box at the SBC) to step up and buy their fare share of boxes.

IF SA had been thinking, then SA could have run a big, hyped sale of tickets and had droves of SA fan base go to the games in the Bayou...IN BIG NUMBERS annoncing they would be there to support "THEIR" team (whether temporary or not). More importantly the TV market, IMHO, is corporate base (which would in turn beget a larger TV market).

San Antonio has a growing corporate base (including the 15th largest in the US and 3rd largest in Texas if you combine Valero with their recent acquisition of Premcor), but it still doesn't compare with the two existing NFL markets in Texas.

San Antonio boasts five Fortune 500 companies HQed here, whereas Dallas claims 18 (including the 2nd largest in the country) and Houston has 21 (including the 7th largest in the US). For those interested: http://www.bidc.state.tx.us/Fortune500Texas.pdf

We certainly aren't the most attractive market, but with a committment from our corporate leaders, we can get this thing done. Valero has been working with City Government, the Chamber of Commerce, and other businesses in the metro area to provide leadership to make this thing happen.

Yeah, an island that just so happens to be in the heart of Texas. Come up with something better that I can believe. San Antonio/Austin area ranks up there. Higher than most NFL cities. I believe if San Antonio ends up with an expansion team sometime in the future, we could rule all of south texas, and possibly fans as far away as El Paso and inside Mexico.

I know it's an eight hour drive, but there will be fans who will cheer on a San Antonio team from El Paso. There's Dallas fans here in San Antonio who make that eight hour round trip by car to watch a game. I'm a rabid Bills fan and I'm 30 hours from home by car one-way and a good six hours by plane. I try to go to a few games at home when my schedule allows. I don't know how long or how much the flight is from San Antonio to El Paso, but it's do-able for a fan from El Paso.

Your right about san Antonio/Austin will being a huge metroplex one day. I can see it happening within the next four or five years. When I make the trip up I35 to Austin it's becoming harder to tell where San Antonio (Bexar County) ends and Austin area begins and Vise-versa because of all the expansion that's going on along that route. It's going to be nice to see that happen.
