Rocky opening for GOP convention as Cruz forces clash with team Trump

The Republican convention appears to be facing a rocky opening both inside and outside the arena – inside, from forces loyal to Ted Cruz mulling a procedural fight and outside, from anti-Trump protesters testing the demonstration rules set by the city.

Party Chairman Reince Priebus formally kicked off the convention Monday afternoon, setting in motion a packed day of speeches and official party business including the platform itself.

But on the sidelines, multiple high-level GOP sources in Cleveland told Fox News that officials loyal to Cruz – led by former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and Sen. Mike Lee of Utah – have been bargaining with the Republican National Committee and Donald Trump campaign over procedural changes they failed to secure in last week’s Rules Committee sessions.

Coming as some anti-Trump delegates still are trying to mount a rebellion on the floor, the Cruz camp is seeking its own changes.

Those forces want to revise the rules that will reward states with closed primaries -- and for the RNC and Trump camp to allow Cruz’s name to be placed in nomination from the convention floor.

For the latter to occur requires certain numbers of delegates from eight states, written signatures and more – and the Trump campaign can move to frustrate that effort if they wish.

Even if that is the case they are likely to de in the convention rather than kept outside. There are more people outside protesting Trump then there are inside the building right now.

He was touting it as being a showbiz convention. Seems like the release for The Last Airbender.

Chaos erupts on GOP convention floor after voice vote shuts down Never Trump forces

CLEVELAND — Chaos broke out at the Republican National Convention after Republican leaders blocked a full floor vote on the convention rules.
Critics of Donald Trump had attempted to force the vote and submitted the signatures they believed were necessary to do so, but after holding a voice vote on the rules, Rep. Steve Womack declared the rules approved and moved on.

Womack left the stage amid an uproar, only to return to the stage moments later for a second voice vote. He again declared that the 'ayes' had won, again to protests from the crowd.

Forcing a roll call vote requires support from the majorities of seven delegations. Anti-Trump delegates submitted what they said were a majority of signatures from at least 9: Colorado, Washington state, Utah, Minnesota, Wyoming, Maine, Iowa, Virginia and Washington, D.C. The also claimed that Alaska had provided signatures as well.
But Womack, after the second quote, claimed three states had withdrawn, against blocking a roll call vote.

The anti-Trump delegates opposed the rules and hoped to vote them down in the roll call vote. Their ultimate goal is to get a new set of rules that allow delegates to vote against Trump even if they are pledged to him based on the results of their state's primary or caucus rules, though they appear unlikely to have the votes to do either.

Forcing a vote on the rules would have temporarily thrown the convention into a lobbying frenzy, with delegates hoping to deny Trump the nomination work to convince a majority of the convention’s 2,472 delegates to reject the party’s rules and adopt new language that would help them sideline Trump.

Even if they'd likely have lost, the Never Trump delegates wanted a vote to display the lingering anti-Trump sentiment in the party — likely from hundreds of delegates — at a time GOP leaders and the Trump campaign are struggling to project unity.

Meanwhile,

CLEVELAND — Donald Trump’s team came to Ohio and declared war on Gov. John Kasich — an approach top-ranking state GOP officials say hurts Trump's chances of beating Hillary Clinton in this crucial swing state in November.

Kasich, a Republican and Trump’s former presidential rival, has steadfastly refused to endorse the real estate mogul, even as the Republican National Convention kicks off in his state. Monday morning, Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort accused Kasich of “embarrassing his state” for declining to get behind Trump, making that charge on MSNBC and reiterating his criticism on several other morning shows.

In an interview with POLITICO, Ohio GOP Chairman Matt Borges sharply rebuked Manafort, suggesting that such comments make it less likely that Trump will carry Ohio, a critical swing state where Trump's contest with Clinton is very tight so far, according to the polling averages.

“He’ll need to do better if we’re going to carry Ohio in the fall,” Borges said.

Ohio is one of the few bright spots for Trump on the battleground map, and Trump is heavily reliant on the Kasich-aligned state GOP for a ground game operation here, making an open war between the two camps even more problematic.

But on Monday, tensions boiled over into the open.

“All along, we’ve been looking for a more unifying message coming from the Trump campaign," said Borges, a close ally of Kasich’s. "And then he came to Cleveland this morning as we’re lifting the curtain on one of the crown jewels of the Republican Party and the effort we had in Ohio to bring this convention here, he decided to go in a direction that was obviously calculated — he did it on all the shows — and he’s factually incorrect.”

The insurgents had the states to roll call the vote but Priebus and co lobbied a few states to get them to withdraw.

The dems superdelegates system is certainly undemocratic but GOP leadership has a stranglehold. They cannot even get rid of Priebus and he's been chair for decades at this point.

When the Republican National Convention officially gavels into order Monday, some major GOP leaders will be conspicuously absent.

The remaining former GOP presidents and the party's past two Republican nominees are not coming to Cleveland. Neither are some former 2016 GOP presidential candidates. More than 20 senators and several House members, along with a half-dozen Republican governors, won't be here either.

There are various excuses and reasons politicians have given. Many do legitimately need to worry about their own re-election prospects in a year when control of the Senate also hangs in the balance. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is recovering from major burns after an accident.

But many have been blatant about the reason they won't be in Ohio: They still do not support Donald Trump, who will become the party's official nominee this week.

"Sen. [Ben] Sasse will not be attending the convention and will instead take his kids to watch some dumpster fires across the state, all of which enjoy more popularity than the current front-runners," a spokesman for the Nebraska Republican and frequent Trump critic told The Hill.

Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, who clashed with Trump in his attempt to mend fences with congressional Republicans earlier this month, has said he will be "mowing my lawn," according to the New York Times. Montana Sen. Steve Daines also told the paper he'll literally be gone fishing (fly fishing, that is).

Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a former Trump rival who hasn't endorsed him yet, will not even attend the RNC in his home state. He will be in Cleveland, but attending breakfasts for several state delegations and speaking to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Some lawmakers have planned foreign trips in lieu of the trek to Cleveland.

Perhaps most noticeably, past Republican presidents and nominees are taking a hard pass. Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush will not attend and are not supporting Trump — not surprising since Trump viciously attacked Jeb, their son and brother respectively, during the primary.

Mitt Romney, the 2012 nominee, isn't coming either. He has been vocally opposed to Trump, blasting him in a speech earlier this year as a "fraud" and a "phony." Arizona Sen. John McCain, who was the party's 2008 nominee, is skipping as well. He has endorsed Trump but needs to focus on his own competitive re-election — one that's been made more difficult by some of Trump's incendiary comments about Hispanics in the heavily Latino state.

The only living GOP nominee who will be attending is Bob Dole, who failed to defeat President Bill Clinton in 1996. The 92-year-old former Senate majority leader is not listed as a speaker.

The smartest people I know never have to tell anyone how smart they are -- and how dumb others are. You've always struck me as highly insecure, but I could be wrong.

Bertrand Russell used to do it all the time as did Einstein. Where do you think his quote about people repeating themselves was getting at?

“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.”
― Albert Einstein

“Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.”
― Albert Einstein

Here's one that reminds me of you and WC quite often:

A stupid man's report of what a clever man says can never be accurate, because he unconsciously translates what he hears into something he can understand.
-Bertrand Russell

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so.
-Bertrand Russell

Here's another one I take to heart:

“I speak to everyone in the same way, whether he is the garbage man or the president of the university.”
― Albert Einstein

I don't comment on how smart I am either. People take multisyllables to mean that but that doesn't make it true.

It's been noted that you just dropped your rank hypocrisy about coming in here and calling people only to whine about being called out in your own right.

First noticed by Jarrett Hill (https://twitter.com/JarrettHill/status/755242423991709697), here is the relevant segment of Melania Trump's remarks:

From a young age my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life. That your work is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise. That you treat people with respect. They taught and showed me values and morals in their daily life. That is a lesson that I continue to pass along to our son, and we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them. I am fortunate for my heritage but also for where it brought me today.

And here's an excerpt of Michelle Obama's "One Nation" speech from 2008:

And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you're going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don't know them, and even if you don't agree with them. And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and to pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children — and all children in this nation — to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.

Steve King (Iowa! :lol ) goes full, explicit Euro-white Christian supremacy.

Steve King raises eyebrows with racially charged comments

Steve King of Iowa on Monday questioned where “any other subgroup of people” contributed more to society than in Western civilization.

“This ‘old, white people’ business does get a little tired,” King said on MSNBC Monday, hours before the first speaker would take the stage at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

“I’d ask you to go back through history and figure out, where are these contributions that have been made by these other categories of people that you’re talking about – where did any other subgroup of people contribute more to civilization?”

he believes the greatest contributions of civilization have come from “Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the Unites States of America and every place where the footprint of Christianity settled the world.”

the Republican Party has a demographic problem: in a country of increasing racial and ethnic diversity, the GOP relies overwhelmingly on older, white voters. Asked to reflect on his party’s challenge, Steve King told a national television audience that white people are awesome.

GOP presidential candidates, eager to do well in the first caucus state, treated the far-right lawmaker as a perfectly credible figure, worthy of respect.

And this goes beyond just the campaign trail. As recently as two years ago, House Republican leaders, unable to govern themselves, effectively handed King control (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/gop-poised-let-steve-king-win) over the congressional GOP’s immigration policy.

Poll: AMERICANS WORRIED ABOUT KEEPING FAMILIES SAFE FROM RUDY GIULIANI

http://www.newyorker.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Borowitz-Giuliani-1200.jpg

CLEVELAND — In what promises to be a key issue in the 2016 general election, a majority of Americans now say that they want a President who can keep their families safe from Rudy Giuliani, a new poll finds.

According to the poll, which was conducted on Monday night by the University of Minnesota’s Opinion Research Institute, an unprovoked attack by Giuliani now rivals immigration, terrorism, and the economy as a top concern of likely voters.

In interviews across the country, voters expressed dismay that neither of the major political parties’ presumptive nominees had offered a coherent plan to prevent the former mayor of New York from harming them or their families in a sudden fit of rage.

“He clearly could go off at any moment, and no one is talking about how to stop him,”

Carol Foyler, a mother of two from suburban San Jose, said.

“I feel less safe from Rudy Giuliani than I did one night ago.”

Harland Dorrinson, a father of three in Toledo, shared her concerns.

“When I put my kids to bed last night, I told them, ‘Don’t worry, the bad man on TV can’t hurt you,’ ” he said. “I wish I could believe that. I really do.”

RNC manipulates the pain of a grieving mother for partisan gain

http://www.msnbc.com/sites/msnbc/files/styles/ratio--3-2--1_5x-1245x830/public/fullsizerender55.jpeg?itok=Cx-CesMd

This (http://www.nbcnews.com/card/mother-benghazi-victim-blames-clinton-sons-death-n612051) was probably the lowest point a party has reached in my lifetime.

The mother of an American killed in the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, said she personally blames Hillary Clinton for her son’s death.

“She deserves to be in stripes,” [Pat] Smith said of Clinton…. “I personally blame Hillary Clinton for the death of my son,” Smith said while fighting back tears.

The convention soon after turned over the stage to two veterans who proceeded to blatantly lie about assorted Benghazi conspiracy theories – each of which contradicted the findings of the Republicans’ own investigations.

How can it be plagiarism if the the speech writer who helped Trump Jr. write it used his own words?

But Buckley quickly responded: "Except it wasn't stealing ... "

He then told CNN: "I was a principal speechwriter for the speech. So it's not an issue."

Breaking: Plagiarized Parts of Melania Trump’s Speech Not in Speechwriter’s Draft

Hallie Jackson of NBC News just revealed (http://www.salon.com/2016/07/19/breaking_plagiarized_portions_of_melania_trumps_rn c_speech_not_in_speechwriters_draft_nbc_reports/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=socialflow) that the plagiarized bits of Melania Trump’s keynote speech last night were not written by the Trump campaign’s professional speechwriter, Matt Scully.

Jackson reported that the stolen parts were added after Scully had handed in his draft. The New York Times reported (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/20/us/politics/melania-trump-speech.html)that Scully sent his version to the campaign about a month ago, and that he was unaware of the changes until he himself watched Trump deliver the speech last night.

"probably an unfortunate oversight,” :lol

RNC Chief Strategist Sean Spicer was clumsier with his defense of Mrs. Trump, attempting to use portions of children’s TV show “My Little Pony” (http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/19/politics/sean-spicer-melania-trump-my-little-pony/) to explain the similarities while speaking with Wolf Blitzer on CNN.

Ben Carson brings ‘Lucifer’ into the political conversation

http://www.msnbc.com/sites/msnbc/files/styles/ratio--3-2--1_5x-1245x830/public/afp_8h4qy_0.jpg?itok=AfCcJDgu

Inviting Ben Carson to give a high-profile speech at the Republican National Convention may have seemed like a good idea to party officials and organizers. The retired physician may have failed badly as a presidential candidate, but he remains popular with the GOP base, and his speeches tend to be well received.

Sure, Carson has struggled badly (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/friends-ben-carson-who-needs-enemies) at times as a surrogate for Donald Trump’s campaign, but how bad could he be in Cleveland? After all, the party would review his prepared remarks in advance.

Of course, that only works out when Carson actually sticks to the script. Last night, he didn’t (http://www.nbcnews.com/card/ben-carson-goes-way-script-n612936).

Ben Carson went off script during his convention address Tuesday night, linking frequent conservative target Saul Alinsky – and Lucifer – to Hillary Clinton.

“One of the things I have learned about Hillary Clinton is that one of her heroes is Saul Alinsky,” Carson said.

Alinsky has been a popular target for the right and his ideas have been tied to President Obama and Clinton. Carson said Alinsky acknowledged Lucifer in one of his books.

Straying from his prepared text, Carson posed a hypothetical question to his audience: “This is a nation where every coin in our pocket and every bill in our wallet says in ‘In God We Trust.’ So are we willing to elect someone as president who has as their role model somebody who acknowledges Lucifer?”

Chris Christie turns convention into Kangaroo Court

http://www.msnbc.com/sites/msnbc/files/styles/ratio--3-2--1_5x-1245x830/public/ap_491748095945.jpg?itok=k5H_xUlx

By any fair measure, no major-party presidential nominee has ever gone quite this far in offering public praise for dictatorships, and it’s one of the more unsettling elements of Trash’s candidacy.

But this dynamic is made vastly more serious when the signature phrase of Trump’s nominating convention is “Lock her up! (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/rnc-lock-her-up_us_578ed8a4e4b0f180da6397a7)” being chanted by an arena full of enraged Republicans.

The toxicity of the combination matters. As we talked about (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/the-gops-preoccupation-imprisoning-clinton-isnt-normal) yesterday, the United States is not some banana republic, where one party vows to lock up the leaders of the other. And yet, against the backdrop of a GOP nominee who has a creepy affinity for authoritarian politics, we’re witnessing a national convention in which Republicans appear eager to grab some pitchforks and make a citizens’ arrest.

And as of last night, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) positioned himself as the mob’s ringleader.Slate’s Michelle Goldberg captured the scene (http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2016/07/chris_christie_and_his_hateful_lock_her_up_mob.htm l):

Christie began by criticizing the Obama administration for failing to hold Clinton accountable for her “dismal record” as secretary of state.

“Tonight, as a former federal prosecutor, I welcome the opportunity to hold Hillary Rodham Clinton accountable for her performance and her character,” said Christie.

The crowd erupted in chants of “LOCK HER UP! LOCK HER UP!” while Christie smiled and nodded.

“Give me a few more minutes, we’ll get there,” he continued.

“Here’s what we’re going to do. We’re gonna present the facts to you, you, tonight, sitting as a jury of her peers, both in this hall and in your living rooms around our nation.”

A series of charges followed. Some, like Clinton’s mishandling of Libya, were at least partly legitimate. Others were bizarre.

At one point, Christie faulted Clinton’s response to the mass kidnapping of schoolgirls in Nigeria, which happened after she left office.

After each accusation, he asked, “Is she guilty or not guilty?” Each time, the crowd roared, “Guilty!”

July 19, 2016: the day the Republican National Convention became a Kangaroo Court.

Republican convention forgets its economic focus

Last night, however, offered the party an opportunity to share its economic message – which as Vox’s Matt Yglesias explained (http://www.vox.com/2016/7/19/12232428/make-america-work-again), also doesn’t exist.

On their “Make America Work Again” evening dedicated to jobs and the economy, Republicans needed to connect with Americans’ still-very-real economic pain without falling into the trap of painting an excessively dark and unrecognizable situation.

Instead of rising to that challenge, they talked about Benghazi. ( convicting Hillary to jail! :lol )

On the economic troubles afflicting the American middle class, they have nothing to say.

Who cares about job creation when there are Benghazi conspiracy theories to share?

The broader problem, of course, extends beyond convention rhetoric.

Republicans have controlled Congress for a year and a half, but they’ve demonstrated no real interest in economic policy.

GOP lawmakers have controlled the House since early 2011, and while they’ve prioritized “Obamacare” repeal votes, debt-ceiling crises, and government-shutdown gambits, they haven’t gotten around to creating a jobs plan.

Republicans no longer seem especially interested in the economy or making it better.

This may be a consequence of circumstance –

with the unemployment rate dropping from 10% to under 5% under President Obama, “Make America Work Again” was going to be a tough sell

– but for voters who still care about economic growth, the Republican Party’s indifference to the issue should matter on Election Day.
