Should the Patriots field be 60 yards wide and the Niners 50?

Should the Packers put a flagpole in the middle of Lambeau to make things interesting?

:lmao the floptrot crew can no longer denigrate the superior athleticism of baseball players, so now they shift into talking about "rule changes."

Anyhow, all sports do it.

FIBA rules are different from NBA rules.

Euro hockey rules are different from the NHL, and Euro hockey rinks are larger.

Floptrot has different shootout rules in the MLS vs. EPL.

Really streeeetching for a burn here, my man.

Just deal with the fact that baseball players are faster, stronger, and can jump higher than floptrot players. Don't fret, you got that stamina thing that even 102 year olds can do :lol

Why are you bringing football into this? My examples were basketball and American football.

Your examples are all between completely different leagues on different continents.

The only game, other than fatbol, that I can think of that does this is golf.

I don't even give a shit about this. I love that each stadium is unique, and GMs have to figure out how to best design a roster that can excel at home.

You don't see that dynamic in any sport, but Splits want a monoculture where we all enjoy watching twinks jog around a field for 90 minutes as the match ends in yet another tie. I don't think Splits really likes basketball all that much. To each his own, but I thought the European mentality was all about being open minded and "tolerant?"

Highly relevant picture.

Floptrot has way less relevant action.

If we're lucky, we might get one goal, three or four saves, and five corner kicks.

"Jogging around" is not "action."

Meanwhile, in a better sport:

http://espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=360723102

Don't you wish floptrot had a back-and-forth like that?

Take the most common final score, for example. In 188,060 league games, the final tally was most often 1-0, proof, for Curley, that soccer was as low-scoring as he suspected. This result has occurred in more than 30,000 games — 16 percent of the total. Other common scores: 2-1 (about 27,000 games), 2-0 (about 22,000) and 1-1 (about 22,000).

In 85,694 games — dangerously close to half the total — at least one of the teams forgot to score at all. That led Curley to an answer for one of his questions: “Soccer is a bit dull,” he told me.

It's the chanting that you love, isn't it?

I mean, most sporting events last from 3 hours to 8 hours per day in test cricket. Golf round is about 6 hours. Men's tennis match is 3-4 hours. Motorsports can last from 2 to 24 hours (LeMans). NBA games average about 2 hours and 45 minutes.

How do you figure that when most of those games (because there is never any scoring) go into extra time/shootout and last about 2 and half hours, which is only 30 minutes less than the average baseball game?

Fair enough. But that is exactly my problem with floptrot. They're so strict about their time constraints, you never feel the true winner is determined for any match, even in the EPL where they have to arbitrarily create stupid fuckin' shit like away goals difference. God forbid a game going into overtime! It's not like those hooligans have anything better to do anyway. So what if they're late to the pub by 30 minutes?

And then Mario Party to decide a winner ::vomit:

The sport just feels contrived.

Wut?

Only during elimination rounds will a match go past 90 minutes.

Yeah, shootouts suck, but at least I don't have to potentially waste 4:25 to watch a 2-1 "pitching matchup" only to receive 1 point out of 162.

Every football game means something. No fatball game means anything when you play 162.

Also, how the fuck can you play 162 games and have a 1-game playoff? :lmao

I'm talking about elimination games. The only games worth watching in povertyball (bringing this back until you stop with fatball, a nonsensical description considering the far superior athletes the MLB has to povertyball). That said, the league rules in most povertyball leagues are stuck on stupid.

Originally, the away goal rule was introduced in football as an expedited way of doing away with playoffs or tie breakers on neutral grounds to resolve a logistical, physical and calendar problem when two teams were so closely matched the final score over the two legs remained in absolute parity, which could remain even after a third game tie breaker. Now, the away goals rule is intended to encourage the away team to be more aggressive.

Translation: "Our sport is so poorly designed, we need to incentivize "aggressive play" so we can get some scoring and action in this dull game."

Every football game means something. No fatball game means anything when you play 162.

Every game always means something. Or teams wouldn't routinely miss the playoffs by 1 or 2 games. Perception doesn't equal reality in this case.

I don't like the Wildcard. So we agree there.

I "get it," though. In and out in 2 hours and time for the pub and fish and chips! Sports be damned!

Not the NFL

The modern NFL is terrible, and this country's obsession with it puzzles me as much as the worldwide obsession with soccer.

I really think the NFL rose to prominence because of gambling (much easier to handicap 16 games than 82 or 162) and fantasy, not because it's this intrinsically awesome sports league. It also helps that the low amount of regular season games makes each game feel like a playoff game.

I like football the sport, but hate the NFL's presentation of it over the past decade or so. Having a commercial after the kickoff WHEN YOU JUST GOT BACK FROM A 4 MINUTE COMMERCIAL. It's absurd.

75 minutes of commercials in every NFL broadcast, compared to 42 for baseball and 45 for basketball:

To the bold, it is very simple: VIOLENCE. This country is obsessed with mass violence. Some relish it. Some condemn it. They all revel in it.

To your table, ummmm, yeah. Basically everything I have said the past year about clock duration and committed-time-to-value (%action), although I've never watched a football match with 38 30sec commercials unless you include half-time.

I think they mean aggregate time, so that figure includes half-time.

What I hate about the "action" definition in these analyses is that they only consider "ball in play" as action. I disagree with that reduction. Take a one run situation in baseball. Two men on. Two outs. Pitcher and batter are dueling. That whole sequence is tense, and even moments where the ball isn't "in play" are entertaining as you watch the pitcher mentally reset after every fouled off pitch and wonder who is going to win the confrontation.

Just like a basketball FT during a crucial time. The ball isn't in play, but the situation isn't boring because of the tension.

Not puzzled how they can watch it, I'm puzzled by the frothing-at-the-mouth obsession the US has with the league, especially in its current bastardized form.

I speak as a life-long NFL fan, but the game has changed over the past 10 or so years, everything from Goodell's rules to the absurd amount of commercials.

The NFL is only still popular because Goodell has turned it into the Call of Duty/Nickelback/Marvel superhero movies of sports. It's less a sport nowadays and more a generic Big Event that is watered down for the lowest common denominator. In other words, they're taking the floptrot approach now.

Hell, I only still watch the shit because of tradition and inertia. As a product, though, it pales in comparison to college football now - let alone the NBA, NHL or MLB.

Why should I have to pay extra for something to get away from the NFL's excessive commercialization? I don't even care that Redzone is only 5.00 per month. It's the principal of the thing. Also, Redzone won't alleviate the problem during the playoffs.

I'll leave soccer out of the comparison, since I never played at an organized level (will also leave out ice hockey), but baseball is by far the hardest sport to learn skillset wise compared to basketball and football.

See how the average guy off the street can't even CATCH a major league fastball.

I'm okay with the ban on launching head first. It's the excessive QB protection I'm against. Defenders have to now basically be walking on eggshells every time they break into the backfield to attempt a sack, because if the hit is a fraction of a second late, *flag* roughing the passer.

I'll leave soccer out of the comparison, since I never played at an organized level (will also leave out ice hockey), but baseball is by far the hardest sport to learn skillset wise compared to basketball and football.

See how the average guy off the street can't even CATCH a major league fastball.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-4xZkja634I didn't think about how hard t is to catch a fastball, and going by the video it seems hard imo
