Isn't this something we always knew about Gasol? As long as he's ready to play by March, tbh.

That's true. I thought I read someone say Pau doesn't believe in working out. So he uses international play as sort of a warm up. It's worked out for him so far.

Pau Gasol admitted to the Spanish media in the training camp of the Spanish national team that he is not in the best shape for the upcoming Olympic Games, however he and theteam have to work to get “in the best possible shape” for Rio.

As he explained: “We would have liked to have all our players in every preparation game preparation, but for one reason or other we couldn’t. On Thursday we play against the Ivory Coast and that will be the first time that all the players have been practicing together for the past four days. This is a significant disadvantage, however we will try to do our best and use the opportunities to get into a pace and shape for the championship”.

Gasol even spoke about himself, saying that he is physically “not at 100%” but he expects to improve: “I hope this game helps me to continue to improve and be ready for the Games. My challenge is to help the team win and finish as high as possible. It is my challenge in every championship to do it right, lead the team as best as I can and reach the top positions”.

Well it's July. Now is a good time to start. In his case international play will help him get ready for next season.

LOL

So, that is supposed to be an "out of shape" Pau Gasol? I would love to be in that sort of shape myself, although Pau has never been very muscular, he has most people beat by a long shot.

Maybe the context of the quote is misunderstood and he means the team (as a whole) is in "bad shape" and not Pau alone. Not sure how that is him being in poor shape or maybe he meant poor conditioning.

You heard that from me, he stated that during an NBATV interview about how he has been able to play at an all-star level in his mid 30s.

well he sure doesn't look fucking fat. can't tell from the highlights if he got winded or something. But he looks like he's at a good playing weight.

SA people really arent all that fat. I'm 6'0" 160lbs at 8% BF. My coworkers at whataburger (well, all the men) are very in shape. The women on the other hand...

Big men shouldn't work out like normal humans. Duncan was amazing for a reason..... Genetic and mental strength.

Basketball is a big stress on your body.

This was my thinking, as well. After reading the whole article/posting, I think it was a "lost in translation" issue.
