The main thing I like him is because he will be able to supplant the post scoring off the second unit we lost with Boris. Now the pnr defense leaves something to be desired.

the way things have been lately the further the bench is away from claiming social security checks the better. Might not know much about these guys but at least we have some athleticism and turned the clock back a little.

I've gone from totally not being too excited for the season to kind of excited lol. I don't have quite your enthusiasm yet but I'll get there.

It was mainly on the glass.

Dedmon has the size to compete. Lee is a better rebounder.

I haven't been able to see the games. He playing worth a shit?
The short version: he's played well but plays like a center offensively. The pairing with Dedmon is problematic bc neither man can shoot and thought Lee is a good passer, Dedmon doesn't have a good feel for the game. The bench is very cramped with the two of them. I think if Dedmon was better they could make it work but for now it's not looking good. Lee himself has played very well.

On defense, the problems were the same as they've always been (http://grantland.com/the-triangle/courtvision-david-lees-interior-defense-a-k-a-the-golden-gate/). Weak contests at the rim, late and non-instinctive rotations and a chronic case of slow feet. But it was on offense where the cracks really began to show. David Lee's (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/21909/david-lee) mid-range shot, which he perfected just before coming over from the New York Knicks (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/new-york-knicks), went from elite...to good...to dreadful in six years. At one time, Lee shot a spectacular 0.448% from beyond 16-feet (for comparison, LaMarcus Aldridge (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/21819/lamarcus-aldridge) has a career best of 0.442%).

In the last two years, that 16-foot shot accuracy fell (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/leeda02.html#shooting::none) to 0.357% in 2013-2014, and then a brutal 0.303% this year. Somehow, his percentages from 3-10 feet crashed even harder, all the way to a nauseating 0.314%. Tony Allen (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/4347/tony-allen) just finished up a FIRST TEAM DEFENSE season (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhQQbZRjecI) shooting 0.261% and 0.333% from those two zones, respectively.
As David Lee lost the ability to make a jump shot, he attempted a much greater share of his field goals from the restricted area. This sounds nice in theory, as any 6'10" professional basketball player will shoot well from that range. However, his inability to leave the area cramped the Warriors offense by rule, forcing Kerr to play Lee with four perimeter players to maximize floor spacing. However, this meant Lee playing rim protector center, further compounding his defensive deficiencies.

http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2015/7/3/8888067/2014-15-season-review-david-lee-golden-state-warriors

It's a concern that the player described there is the one the Spurs have this season. I think his lack of a jumpshot cramps the space in any Lee/Dedmon lineup and that twosome is unplayable as they are (with both wanting to hang around the basket and roll). Perimeter players who like to drive can't get a shot at doing that, and the units he plays in with Dedmon are easy to defend as defenders can play passing lanes easily with such cramped spacing. In general, Lee has been individually efective at doing what he does, but he affects his lineups negatively unless he's paired with other floor spacing big men. Unless he starts making a jumpshot I don't see him viable paired with Dedmon.

It is early in the preason though, and Pop experimenting with lineups still, but my concerns haven't been put to rest by what I have seen from Lee and Demon together.

Another article which highlights how having Lee on the floor increases TO and difficulties for his teams:
http://www.hashtagbasketball.com/dallas-mavericks/content/david-lees-real-on-court-impact

In the same vein of surprising impacts, Lee’s most highly complimented skill is his passing as a big man, but his presence increases turnovers, decreases assists, and depresses the Mavs spacing such that they shoot less three pointers and make a smaller percentage of them in dramatic fashion. With Lee on the floor, the Mavs shoot 8 less three pointers per 48 minutes and make only 26% of them, as opposed to the 40.3% they have made with Lee off the floor.

It doesn't surprise me bc we have seen this in a few games this preseason with Lee/Dedmon lineups.

This last one is a podcast that has as a guest John Karalis of Locked on Celtics. He talks about how Lee negatively impacted the Celtics to the point they had to bench him, and how much better they were with Evan Turner once Lee was gone as a playmaker.

Lee is the second/third center on team...not a pf anymore- that's basically 'cause the spacing problems he create with his playing.
The weird thing is that he looks like he give a negative impact to the team while at the same time it's undoubtable thet he is a decent player...
imho is necessary to find the right way to maximize the positive impact he can have...and the ideal player in that situation could be a player that can shoot from outside on offense and play a decent/good shot blocking help defense (Lee is a more than decent rebounder). imho, of the bench players we have, the ideal partner would be Bertans....while the worst (on offense) partner is Dedmon. Lee could work with La, Pau or KA given thet all three are more than decent shoothers...

Bertans IMO is going to end up being the bench 4, but he needs to earn it the hard way. I see Lee as Butler, the veteran who will eventually get supplanted by guys who fit better as they improve. Bertans just has a lot to work on defensively right now and is getting Pop's rook treatment.

I also tend to think based on observation, Pop will give a fair run to Dedmon/Lee, but if the team is losing, not cutting it and Lee a negative influence, then he's not worth it. The rebounding he brings is not going to be worth it if Dedmon improves like he has been doing.

It's remarkable that I cited above examples of GSW, Celtics and Mavs. All 3 teams he was a negative on the past couple of seasons. This is the player he is at this stage of his career. Pop also has some slashers in J.Simms and Murray who like to get to the rim, they can't play with Lee period. It's been a TO fest when that happens. Even Manu is shooting poorly and TO the ball a lot, nobody plays well with Lee as a PF and if he's a Center then he's the 3rd center period. Like I said, it's a cancerous style of play in today's NBA.

bklynspursfan
10-16-2016, 10:11 AM
I think regardless of what he's done on other teams, he will play here. Chip will work with him on his shot. He's a very good P &R player, and rebounds/hustles.

Manu and Patty are both capable 3 point shooters. They do need another reliable shooter off the bench, maybe that's Bertans, idk... its possible Lee subs in early for Pau and Pau plays more with the 2nd unit. I just doubt Pop told him before signing he had a specific role for him just to end up not playing him.

10-16-2016, 02:15 PM
I haven't been able to see the games. He playing worth a shit? He did alright and I'm glad we have him. Dedman had by far his best game and they had a couple moments together with Dedman rolling and Lee passing. I think the 4 spot on the bench will be musical chairs with Bertans and Lee depending on who we're playing.

His perimeter defense is shit particularly when paired with Gasol but between his post moves, ability to finish, board, screen and roll and general toughness he is a huge plus.

He is an interesting case. His stop start is not very good but his quickness is very good given his age.

Plus he seems like a cool kat. I would party with him.

his defense is beyond awful, but he makes up for it with his toughness and intensity on O and the boards. im pretty confident in saying if you replace West's bitch ass with this version of Lee vs. OKC we win that series, dude just has a knack for pulling down rebounds or tipping them out
