I'm not seeing guys coming off double screens, no elevator plays, the offense often looks pretty aimless and they get terrible shots out of it (Mikan shot 38% that season). Just throwing the ball around doesn't get good shots if there aren't good screens to force bad mismatches and/or the defense to collapse.

Oh, I know. I'm not suggesting basketball stagnated from the 60's until the Spurs "revived" team passing. Team basketball continued to evolve, especially the college and Euro game, and the 80's NBA featured some of the best team basketball in NBA history.

But then Jordan happened, Stern's marketing machine went into overdrive, and "hero ball" was born. For all the credit the Triangle gets as a sophisticated system, Big Chief didn't even run it that much and/or Jordan would often say fuck the Triangle and just iso. Same with the 3 peat Lakers. Force feed Shaq, have Kobe play off of him as a cutting threat, while Fisher, Fox, Shaw, etc stand around at the 3 point line waiting for secondary action.

I'm a Howard hater, so I tend to agree with you - but you'd be surprised the difference a reliable hook shot would make. Look at Kareem, who lived off a hook shot for 20 years and used it to score more points than everyone else in history. It's a great shot for big men because it's very difficult to block, as the shooter's body is between the ball and defender. It takes finesse, but if a 6'10 guy can hit it reliably, he can dominate with it.
