He has more room to get better than say Arcidiacono. Arci has much better skills today but he's only 6'3". Forbes doesn't have Arci's dribbling skill but is a better shooter. However, he's also only 6'3".

If Spurs can make Leonard lead the league in 3point shooting percentage, then perhaps they can make another 6'7" player shoot that well.

Speaking about defense, he does seem to play the kind of defense the Spurs play. You know, the kind that doesn't really try to block a shot.

Not a fan of this thread, Garino is from Argentina not Mexico.
Everytime i look at this thread it reminds me of how ignorant some people are in here for confusing argentineans with mexicans.
I can understand some people confusing Italian and Argentinean lastnames as they are similar sometimes. But this.
Plus, you have to understand that it is an honor for us that an Argentinean player is continuing Manuīs Legacy on the Spurs, it is, to me, an insult in that matter.
I now here the moderation is almost none, and that racist and homophobic comments are said without consequence, yet i prefer to let my opinion on this matter be known.

Originally church threads were made to highlight marginal players who needed a prayer to make the team. Garino fits this. But anyway, these threads are meant to be ironic. This one is ironic in the way you mentioned.

The bigger issue is that we don't need two threads for each player: one for signing the other a church thread.

Well church threads tend to last longer (years, even). I think they just end up being for general talk and link dumps. They're the main board analog to the "Current Spur" treads in the TT, but people actually use these.

My wife and I spent 3+ weeks in the southern cone in January and February, 2014. After a couple of days in Rio, we went to Iguazú Falls, then B.A., then Bariloche, then Montivideo, Colonia, Punta del Este. We probably met more Argentinos in Punta than the rest of the trip combined. For the most part, we were treated very well. Argentines are not the definition of simpatico, but we were treated cordially by the great majority. We spent one day at Iguazu with a much younger couple from B.A. who were, indeed, muy simpatico. After another day at the falls, another young lady invited us to share mate with her. That was an honor and very gratifying. I actually acquired a taste for mate. We would definitely go back. :toast

Several interviews in Spanish by Garino. He's a very likeable interesting dude.
770946737636798464
770946236773986304
770945672992395264
In parts of the interview he mentions how he started to commit to the defensive end when he realized he needed to be more impactful defensively if he wanted to attend a good university in the U.S. and how defense has been emphasized to him since an early stage bc he wasn't a greatly impactful offensive player. It really took a mental commitment to defense to improve, which he has now.
He talks about what it was like to play with the Golden Generation in Argentina among other local Argentinean topics.

In the only part of the interview when he mentions the Spurs he states that his confidence is really high after the Olympic games but at the same time he will not be disappointed if he doesn't make the San Antonio Spurs NBA team because he's realistic and he's aware that his game is not currently at the NBA level. He will still be satisfied being assigned to Austin because he looks forward to learning and benefitting from the quality of their trainers. He also said that the Spurs as an organization really follow up on the development of their players, so no matter which one of the two teams he ends up playing in he will still benefit and continue to improve.

Also, Garino's agent came out and said he'd play in the dleague. I doubt things are that settled up ahead of training camp, but maybe he has been advised that is a very high probability:
770602991363710976
Interview again is in Spanish. This is what his agent said:

He basically signed a dleague contract where he will play during preseason in San Antonio but will then be assigned to their dleague team. The Spurs have the option of picking him up to play in the NBA team his second season, but it is a team option... its a rough translation, but I imagine there is a chance he could still make the team. The Spurs obligation though is limited to the dleague team assignment.

Except you lumped all Mexicans with the "I don't like them" qualifier which puts you in the same group as Hitler.

Really, not liking a nations ideoscincrazy is the same as thinking you are superior than everyone else?
Please open a new thread to talk about it and iīll gladly take your point.

Anywayīs this is a forumīs, opinon should not be taken so seriously, you are always allowed to do it if what happens here determines your how your life will develop, but otherwise, you should know that opinions said here are "general" if you want.
Of course i have not met "all mexicans" and i lived there a while and had friends, who were, by the way mexicans, but as this is a forum and my intention was not to make a complete observation on the case of how i donīt like "in general" the way they conduct in social life (because thatīs were i knew most and thatīs were they dissapointed me) in my particular experience i found that the way they manage some social mandates, like friendship in particular, is very, very different, from the way we argentines do it, and how we conceive our interrelations with one and other.
Thatīs why, and i didnīt mean to be rude, "i just donīt like them".
We can also discuss, if you will, if i am "in the same group as Hitler", which as a political psycologist i would strongly disagree as Hitlerīs thoughts were based mainly on hate, while mines are based on... in donīt know, bad experience maybe or just not meeting the right people, i for sure, donīt care much about Mexicans and for sure i donīt hate them, i still root for them everytime they play an european team or the usa.
So if you will, we can talk about that too.
But the important hing you can also rethink, is that, whether if i am really "in the same group as Hitler" as you said, or you just misunderstood some of my posts because you failed to put them into this forumīs context and you are not really familiar with my opinions.
If you want to chat about this or any other subject, iīll be pleased as i usually donīt find the political opinions on this forum to be particulary interesting and will be glad on sharing about the subject.
Sory if i misspelled or made any writing mistakes as english is not my mother tounge.

That's ok... no need to discuss further.

I'm Mexican, and YET Lionel Messi is still my favorite soccer player and Manu Ginóbili is my favorite basketball player. In my mind, people are more important than their nationality.

Doesn't have the point forward skills that Ingles has. I'm sure it wasn't an option but wish the Spurs could have somehow got him in the Diaw trade.

Hopefully one day he (Ingles) will be on the Spurs roster.

I'm still amazed that Ingles has become a rotation player in the NBA. The guy was a really average Euroleague player before he made the jump.

Bigger than not taking Eddie Lucas with the 57th pick of the 1999 draft?

Interesting... he's last in that list, so not a priority target but a remote possibility, since he's fallen out of Pops rotation. Vogel is a defensive minded coach and Kyle is a plus player on defense. Chad Forcier (Magic Asst Coach) knows him well too.

They have been trying to get better defensively and not doing well at it.

Kyle could get traded if he's not in the Spurs plans long term for sure . Hard to say right now bc Spurs have so many FA to take care of this summer and he's still in that rook deal but if he won't be reupped or earn a regular rotation spot a trade would not be that bad of an idea. Also, he's deserving of playing time. Might be good for him too.

I agree; Spurs won't trade either player. Just wouldn't bring enough in return on their rookie contracts.

I wonder if ORL would give up on Elfrid Payton? He's obviously not great, but young and has flashes every now and again.

Orlando and Detroit are going to be open to moving anybody. After making a bunch of moves that didn't pan out, I expect both teams to blow it up.

He won't have much value. PG position is so damn saturated that there's hardly a demand.

Also, he only has 1 yr left on his rookie deal then he'll be due for a hefty raise that's hard to justify for other teams based on his inconsistency.

As for the Spurs, I doubt they'd want to give up significant assets for 1 yr of Payton before they have to make a big decision. Especially when they have Murray waiting in the wings, who's on a very cheap contract for another 3-4 yrs, who's just salivating for an opportunity.

Well as a means of getting a cheap audition at a major position of need, I can see a Kyle for Payton type deal greatly interesting the Spurs. If he sucks you let him walk and you are no worse for the wear

I think Kyle for hezonja is more likely. He's been terrible in Orlando but, has good athleticism and has a longer rookie contract. He the kind of guy that either doesn't make it in the NBA or could benefit from a change of scenery and culture. It might be worth a gamble..

The Magic are clearly tanking hard, that's why they signed Pato and the other dleague player but still it's an opportunity for him to be seen in some NBA games against better competition. His 3 pt shooting made him intriguing for a Magic team that lacks in 3 pt shooting. He also has a non guaranteed deal for next season and will play in their Summer League with an opportunity in training camp to make the team for next season. It's as good of an opportunity as he can hope for. Again good luck to him.

Both Payton and Hezonja are talented, young players. It just seems like a matter of development.

Payton could use some refinement, specially his shooting and cutting that hair so it doesn't block his FTs :lol
