View Full Version : Gary Johnson Has a Plan

It was June 22, and Gary Johnson was on a roll. Four years earlier, following a calamitous bid for the Republican nomination, the former New Mexico governor had garnered 1 percent of the national vote against Barack Obama and Mitt Romney as the Libertarian candidate. Now, facing the two most unpopular nominees in the history of polling, he was already cracking double digits—and the media was starting to notice. In the three weeks since wrapping up his party’s nomination, Johnson had taken his limited-government gospel to Meet the Press, Anderson Cooper 360, and several other top news shows. The irreverent triathlete, whose most recent job was CEO of a cannabis-products company, was also getting a chance to showcase his goofier side. On TBS’s Full Frontal, he went rock climbing with host Samantha Bee and surprised her mid-climb with a peck on the cheek. On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Johnson—flanked by his running mate and fellow onetime Republican, former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld—strode on stage wearing a dark suit and black Nikes. “Governor,” Colbert said, “I am legally required to ask you the following question: Are you high?” The candidate was all smiles. “Being on this show, yes.”

Johnson, whose previous on-screen performances ranged from the mediocre to the horrific, seemed finally to be finding his groove. And today in New York, as the candidate rode the subway with Weld to the CNN headquarters, he was getting his biggest chance yet—an hourlong town hall event, in prime time. As Johnson stood backstage waiting for his cue, he took a deep breath. Everything was going according to plan.

Until now.

From the moment Johnson took his seat on the stage, those who knew him best realized something was off. The candidate appeared uncomfortable, exhibiting all telltale signs of nervous energy—the fidgeting, the inconsistent eye contact, the ill-timed smiles. Perhaps the first bad omen was that Johnson was not wearing his lucky Nikes. Host Chris Cuomo pointed out his black leather shoes. Johnson winced. “I always have sneakers on,” he said. “And I just—you know, everybody in my campaign is just, ‘Don’t blow it with the shoes.’” Whatever it was—the formalwear, the high stakes of the event, the mounting sleep deprivation—it became clear over the next hour that Johnson was lost in his head. In response to a question from the distraught mother of a heroin addict, who railed against Johnson’s support for drug legalization, the candidate talked up the virtues of needle exchanges. In response to an Orlando woman who’d witnessed the Pulse nightclub mass shooting and wanted to know why Johnson would want to make gun access easier, he launched into a scripted response without pausing to acknowledge the woman’s trauma. At several moments, Johnson also appeared wildly out of step with Weld, as the two performed their best impersonation of the two-headed monster from Sesame Street.

Good read, Fuzzy. :tu

Denying the 270 might be feasible, but the next step seems nearly impossible swinging enough house of Representatives.....but if something unlikely were to happen, this is the election cycle for it to happen.

Why not? And what is a real conservative in your definition. Second question is a bit tricky, but just wanted your opinion.

Aleppo is not a "refugee issue". It's the murder, gassing of non-combattants, collateral damage of the non-refugees.

Aleppo has been in the press for weeks now, for anybody, like a wannabe President, who is up to date.

It's been the hot point of Syria for 4 years now. The government sieged it and the rebels broke through in the past months. If you are going to be CiC and the leader of the western world you need to know that. It is a huge indictment of his readiness to take on that role.

I think Johnson is a dufus but in his defense the word Syria should have been included in the question. He's taking questions from a group of people about social issues and Barnacle out of the blue asks "What about Aleppo?". Just because he didn't instantly make the connection doesn't mean he doesn't know what's happening in Syria or Aleppo.

GARY JOHNSON VOWS TO GET TOUGH ON EAST KOREA

http://www.newyorker.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Borowitz-Gary-Johnson-Vows-to-Get-Tough-On-East-Korea-1200.jpg

NEW YORK — In an appearance Friday on CNN, Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Presidential nominee, promised that as President he would get tough on East Korea.

“This behavior is unacceptable,” he said. “The East Koreans are making us look like idiots.”

While stressing that he remained, for the most part, an isolationist, he said, “I will do everything in my power as President to support our allies in West Korea.”

He also blasted the Obama Administration for its “lack of transparency” in conducting foreign policy. “I think it’s unconscionable that I just found out about these countries today,” he said.

GARY JOHNSON SAYS HIS FAVORITE FOREIGN LEADER IS OBI-WAN KENOBI

DURHAM, N.H. — Asked at a town-hall meeting on Wednesday to name his favorite foreign leader, the Libertarian Presidential candidate

Gary Johnson seemed stumped at first before finally responding, “Obi-Wan Kenobi.”

The host of the town hall, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, appeared initially taken aback by Johnson’s answer, but the former New Mexico governor went on to defend it vigorously.

“Obi-Wan Kenobi is a Jedi Master, Chris,” Johnson said. “More than anyone else, he taught me that the Force is already strong with me.”
“We’re on the same page about this, aren’t we, Bill?” he asked his running mate, the former Massachusetts Governor William Weld, who smiled weakly and shifted awkwardly in his chair.

As the town-hall audience murmured nervously, Matthews reframed the question for Johnson. “What I meant was,

Governor, could you name your favorite world leader on this planet?” he asked.

Again, Johnson seemed perplexed, before eventually replying, “Frodo.”

The Libertarian Party announced on Thursday that Johnson would participate in no additional town halls.

Gary Johnson Does Not Embrace Millennials' Interests

Aside from the legalization of marijuana, the Libertarian Party candidate opposes nearly everything young voters care about.

Johnson supports the legalization of marijuana—way cool. Less cool is his position on climate change. Although he acknowledges that it is both real and at least partly man-made, he believes government should take no action against it, leaving the solution, in the classic libertarian manner, to the market and the private sector.

As if it weren’t the private sector, in response to the market’s incentives, that created global warming in the first place.

Then there’s Johnson’s position on what government can do to make college more affordable and enable students to matriculate without piling up mountains of debt. Or, more accurately, the absence of a position. He doesn’t have one, since the very idea of such government interference runs counter to the libertarian creed.

Or consider Johnson’s tax plan, which calls for eliminating the income tax and substituting a national sales tax—a massive shift of the tax burden away from the wealthy to the 90 percent, a group that includes the overwhelming majority of 20-somethings.
