I was excited to see what they were going to do with it at the movies as opposed to having to tone it down for TV. But now I'm wondering if it's just going to be some tricked up modernization. On a story that doesn't need all of that shit.

Good point about the freedom of a theater release.. If they are smart they will follow the book and go more into detail because the movie cut a TON of shit vs the book.. Start the movie with the killing of that gay kid where Pennywise first reveals himself under the bridge vs Maryanne getting killed after riding her bike..

I agree. To me, the first section of the book was the scariest. I still remember the narration of the boy going down into the basement. Not that they can capture his writing on film. But they just need to try to tell the damn story and not go for just shock and sensory overload.

That's good to see the director has a creepy artistic vision for the movie based on those pics.. I don't recall 29 Neibolt St. being mentioned or shown in the movie, unless the one where the monster walks down the stairs and they took off on the bike was supposed to be it.

Nowhere to go up with this remake as far as I'm concerned. The original is one of the most godawful pieces of garbage I've ever seen. Literally everything about it besides Curry was horrible. 4 hours of your life you can never get back.
In this era of shitty remakes, I'm actually excited about IT because there's absolutely no way it can be worse the original and there's so much potential for a great movie.

That's the thing with most Stephen King movies. His books kick ass but most of the movies aren't that great. It's a shame because there is so much potential. I think, in the end, not enough money is put into them.

Yeah, I think Pet Cemetery, Green Mile, The Shining and Stand By Me are the exceptions. A lot of his stuff turned out pretty bad on screen. I think it's because for his longer books, the only suitable vehicle historically has been the TV mini series. They're just too long for a feature film (unless you're talking about the Shining which was totally altered for the movie, while the mini series was garbage, like you said). Outside of Lonesome Dove, most tv miniseries of decade past have been pretty bad. I think the time is right for some remakes of King's longer books. I would love to see Netflix, with all of its creative freedom and innovation, take on something like IT or The Stand. Could be what King fans have craved for years.
And yes, there's an infamous scene in the IT book in which the guys in Losers have a coming of age train with the one girl. We're all sitting here wondering if that scene will actually be included in the remake. lol

:lol coming of age train, yeah not sure how you film a girl saying "shoot it all over me" as Pennywise is preying on them.
Agree that Netflix and HBO should try to adapt his stuff, that seems like the best fit. Another issue is that King is great at putting you inside the mind or psyche of a character and that's hard to translate to cinema. Things like internal dialogue get lost, so that's why his short stories are more successful imo, because they tend to have broader strokes so the director can fill in the rest.

At that point King was drinking a case of Budweiser and snorting about a gram of cocaine every day. IIRC he barely remembers writing "The Tommyknockers." It isn't his worst book (it's better than "Firestarter" for example) but not his best, no.

IMO part of the issue with some of the movie adaptations is that the supernatural elements don't really translate that well to the screen. The best adaptations (Stand By Me, Shawshank, The Green Mile) seem to be the stories that are more reality/character based without vampires, homicidal clowns, etc. That's why I think some of the Bachman books would make really good films in the right hands; they're more reality-based for the most part.

How weird would it be to see "From a Buick 8" made into a movie. I want to see it done just to see the weird bat thing.

But then I said to myself, "Hey...can the silly bullshit guy. Ok?".

Really? Not sure why I haven't seen that one yet.
I think I've gotten it confused with "77 Shadow Street" in the past. Which is Koontz and not King.

Now that I've really thought about it, I think there's been more good than bad movies that came out of King stories.

Strathairn leads the cast there. Bates, almost beautiful (younger mother sequence) before the discovery, then the murder. The murder is not treated as an aside, or, a comeuppance, or, an end. There is no end here.
Yes, it's stocked with King's obsession with locking man to bed post and beating him for being man, but, at least in "DC" it's not said that way, not aloud for hours on end. We're shown instead of verbally harangued. We're given credit for having half-a-brain.
When Leigh confronts herself in the mirror and can only see the back of her head it's a decimating jolt. There is no end.
& from "outside" we're pumped & primed by the local magistrate, played finely by Plummer. He really stokes the fire.

It's got that swell cuck scene when Depp gets the motel room key and bargs in their room so he can see.

I need to watch it again. It's been years. One thing I do remember quite well is the sense of foreboding that was built starting with the boat ride.

I'm confused now. I was thinking Timothy Hutton was the star but it's Johnny Depp. But Timothy Hutton was in it. But Timothy Hutton was the lead of the Dark Half which seems to be the same story.

Depp went corny in the last 30 minutes or so, it was hilarious and kinda didn't jive with the rest of the movie from what i remember

Yep, the young girl actress did a swell job there. As did Strathairn. It edges on normalcy (hot chocolate for father & daughter) even though we know where it is intended & headed.
& even though Bates & this fellow have had a rocky time of marriage Bates strives to make the best of it, perhaps even find a shred---the place where once they loved one another. That's important to the center of the film. The production knew it and Bates delivers it. So, as you're watching it, even though you know the truth, the viewer can go along with it as long & as far as "Dolores" takes us.

Yep, you can tell Depp had his heavy hands all over this movie, but, yet it has something that endures, that appeals.

I take it back about him making any movie watchable. I just skimmed through his filmography. I'll scale it back and say he almost always does a great job.

Way better than the made for tv crap like tommyknockers or langoliers

Yep, Michael Constantine as the old Gypsy keeps the movie strong---and the ending is complex for this type of film.
I like this movie. The young Gypsy girl is attractive as is Billy's wife.
The Gypsies are unrelenting from beginning to end.
(A) weak spot is the Joe Montegna character. It/he just comes off as ill placed.

Remakes of Carrie, Poltergeist, Friday the 13th, and Nightmare on Elm Street have all sucked, so I'd go in with very low expectations on this. I have enjoyed the Halloween reboot though.

Idgaf about the trend of shitty remakes, I'll pay to watch this opening night at the theater. If it sucks, fine, but IT is one of my favorite movies growing up and I still watch it regularly to this day. I'm not a fan of Pennywise's new look, but it's cool I'll get over it if the acting is on point, and the movie stays true to the book (as it looks to so far)

King did that shit a lot in his books. Some deux ex machina that often involved some out of the blue supernatural monster or something. I hated the endings to a lot of his books. I think he was way better at writing the story and building the tension than executing the climax.

I'm convinced that he doesn't plan his stories completely. It's like after 1000 pages he just decides "alright I'm tired of this shit" and craps out an ending.
