Yup, I have a Nikon D7000. This was shot with a 35mm prime lens. Probably going to go full frame at the end of this year.

Really nice set:toast I shot Nikon for years (D700 and D800e) Full frame is the way to go, perhaps try mirror less if you don't like lugging a DSLR. A used Sony RX1 are cheap nowadays. The sensor is amazing.

What the deal with mirror less Vs DSLR? I was set on buying a DSLR as I don't have a decent camera, but I keep seeing people mention these newer mirror less cameras? What's the advantage of them? Keep in mind, I don't know much about cameras, so I'm not sure what to get. Should I just get DSLR, or look into mirror less ones? Do you can any suggestions on models I can look at. Either DSLR or mirror less. Budget would be $400 - $600 USD. Can you get something that's pretty decent these days in that price range?

Mirrors less are compact and the quality is phenomenal all things considered. DSLRs on the other hand are bulky and heavy, but the quality is still slightly better. Bokeh and depth is still better on DSLRs. My brother has a mirror less and the quality is really good, especially in low light conditions. I shoot DSLRs and the quality is just slightly better.

Do keep in mind that no matter which way to go, you are tied to the system. Lens are what gets you so buy second hand. Look for signs of glass deterioration (mood, scratches, etc) and it the lens are in pristine condition, then go for them. Also consider what you normally use your camera for, if you are shooting landscape, then you can get bulkier gear as you can drag things around, if you are shooting wildlife then get one good tele lens, if street then get lighter gear.

Mirrorless are great because they are compact but they offer DSLR quality images. They are also interchangeable so youre not stuck with a fixed lens, meaning you can do all sorts of photography (macro, portrait, landscape etc)

With your budget, Ill suggest getting a used Fuji XT10 with a zoom lens for starters.

Just look at what this little thing can do

Think of a mirrorless camera as a sports car. It's sleek, it's beautiful, and it's going to get you from point A to point B faster than anything else on the market (because it's small and thus easy to handle).

A DSLR is not going to offer drastically better images all the time, but this is highly dependent upon what you shoot. ANY time you have a situation where the lighting quality is changing quickly (clouds to sun, sports where the players are motionless one minute and flying around the next), the DSLR is going to blow away the capability of a compact camera, because the dials and buttons on a DSLR give you instant access to anything you need to change in a blink of an eye to get the ideal image. It's the SUV of cameras -- rugged, heavy, but able to transverse any terrain you need it to. ML cameras are definitely getting better on this front but at the higher end of photography they are still miles away from competing with DSLRs in harsh/sub optimal conditions. DSLRs are not as user friendly at first because the learning curve is so steep, but once you know what you're doing you can shoot in basically any light if you have the right lens. I do a lot of low light dance photography and having a fast lens + controls that can adapt to the changing hues and speeds of the dancers is absolutely crucial to getting images that are print worthy.

Now for the bad news: Unfortunately for your budget it really doesn't leave you a lot of room for options. Keep in mind that both cameras need lenses to shoot with. A starter lens is going to be okay for you, but to get the images you want you're probably going to have to invest significantly in several lenses to give you the kind of flexibility you need.

The way I see it you have a couple of routes you could go:

1) Used (for either DSLR or ML). Find one on craigslist (ideally with a few lenses bundled) and see how much you enjoy shooting. The D7k I use is pretty affordable right now if you do some searching.

2) Get a cell phone with a really nice camera. Either the LG G5, the Samsung S7/S7 Edge, or the new iPhone 7. I can say with a high degree of certainty that if you love photography, and really enjoy shooting, a good cell phone is going to let you know whether or not you enjoy it enough to invest heavily in a camera.

Before anyone starts to say how ridiculous that is, here are some shots from my LG G4.

Taken in a club obviously, in extremely low light. The f1.8 sensor on the G4 is not a joke.

The above 3 shots were all from Ghost Ship SF. Obviously at night. Amazing how far cell phones have come.

Zoom in on this. Look at the freakin' detail on that bug. Obscene.

http://imgur.com/tMWvIFo

The fact that it can pull this kind of detail without a tripod is ridiculous. This would look really clean if I did any editing or stacked the photos on each other.

The downside to a cell phone is it's not going to give you much zoom if any at all. Digital zoom is just a crop of the original photo.
