Republican politicians fall back in line behind Trump after defecting

The anti-Trashers were obviously threatened by RNC/VRWC to fall back in file like spineless chickenshit. And they fell in.

The defections never made any sense. White nationalists seem to make up the majority of their base and the GOP needs them for their congressional elections.

That's kind of a poor account of what those Republicans did. They didn't "backtrack" or "defect," they simply said Trump should drop himself from the ticket. They never said they wouldn't vote for him if he stayed on.

It was basically, "Please remove yourself from the ticket so I don't have to vote for you." Gutless.

I sat next to [Putin]. He’s an engaging and, you know, very interesting conversationalist,”

“In terms of interesting, Vladimir Putin is always interesting,” she said. “You’re never quite sure what he’s going to do or say next, and he’s always – he walks around with, you know, a redwood chip on his shoulder defending and promoting, you know, Mother Russia. So he and I have had our interesting moments.”

Clinton allies touted political boost from Wall Street taxes, fees
Hillary Clinton’s advisers tried to sell the idea of Wall Street transaction taxes and bank fees as useful to boosting the campaign amid the populist fervor among voters during the Democratic primaries, the latest batch of WikiLeaks e-mails shows.

In August 2015, well before Clinton rolled out her Wall Street regulation plan in October of that year, Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden sent Clinton an e-mail promoting a potential financial transaction tax.

"I'm wary of the growing economic populism on the center-left and I believe an FTT is the kind of bold proposal that both makes sense on policy grounds and achieves important political objectives,” Tanden said, according to an unverified message that WikiLeaks claims came from Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta’s e-mail account.

Clinton and her rivals in the Democratic primary — Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley — ultimately backed variations of the idea. Clinton’s approach was relatively narrow -- a targeted tax aimed at combating “harmful” high-frequency trading. She also backed a separate “risk fee” on the biggest financial institutions.

In February, the issue came up again in an e-mail exchange involving Tanden and former National Economic Council Director Gene Sperling.

Sperling said there might be “some real upside to going specific” on the risk fee. He said it would "lead to lots of estimates of how much it will cost the major banks that our fee focuses on."

"So with detail you could get discussion like will HRC's proposal mean [Goldman Sachs] and [JPMorgan Chase] owe $8 billion or $18 billion," Sperling added. "Worse things for us. Worth considering."

Revisiting a financial transaction tax proposal would also “clearly help” in the primary, he said, but “we may look like we are just copying Bernie."

In another window into the campaign's early moves around financial regulation, an e-mail from January 2015 describes former Rep. Barney Frank reaching out to ask if Clinton would engage on his namesake financial reform legislation, the 2010 Dodd-Frank law.

Frank's pitch followed an intense fight the month before over a Dodd-Frank rollback that was included in a year-end government funding bill.

"He made the obvious arguments, that it would be good for her and good for him as he is spending a lot of time making the case for why the GOP chipping away at it is such a travesty," Clinton aide Nick Merrill wrote.

Clinton responded with a tweet from her account: "Attacking financial reform is risky and wrong. Better for Congress to focus on jobs and wages for middle class families."

The Podesta emails
POLITICO's coverage of the latest WikiLeaks dump of emails from Clinton campaign chair John Podesta.
POLITICO Staff Pinned by POLITICO Staff Share Tweet
WikiLeaks dropped on Thursday the sixth installment of its trove of Hillary Clinton campaign manager John Podesta’s hacked emails.

The messages released so far — which Clinton's campaign has neither verified nor denied the authenticity of — have provided an unprecedented glimpse into the inner workings of the Clinton camp.

Clinton camp worried over carbon tax stance, hacked emails show
Hillary Clinton's campaign manager worried that supporting a carbon tax would be "lethal in the general" election, but proposed she avoid opposing one during her primary battle with Bernie Sanders, according to a batch of internal emails released Thursday by WikiLeaks.

Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon circulated a June 2015 POLITICO report that Sen. Charles Schumer said a deal on a bipartisan carbon tax would be achievable if Clinton wins the presidency. Fallon asked policy aides if the campaign would "go near such a proposal or can we nip this in the bud?"

Campaign manager Robby Mook replied that the best response was to avoid giving Sanders any opportunity for "contrast" with Clinton.

"I don't recall any polling to guide us, but I'd be a bit nervous about rushing to say we'd never support such a tax," Mook replied. "Bernie I assume DOES support such a tax and it could be fodder for him if we say unequivocally now that we don't support one.

"To be clear: it's lethal in the general, so I don't want to support one," he continued. "But don't want to give bernie contrast right now. So if there's a way to re-state principles and say she'll announce something in the next few weeks, that would be great."

While Clinton has promised to strengthen EPA's carbon regulations on power plants and vehicles, the question of whether she would specifically support a carbon tax proved tricky throughout the primary.

In April of this year, Clinton again declined to rule out pursuing a carbon tax during a debate with Sanders, but she was critical of his bill putting a price on greenhouse gas emissions. "I don’t take a back seat to your legislation that you’ve introduced that you haven’t been able to get passed," Clinton told Sanders. "I want to do what we can do to actually make progress in dealing with the crisis."

A carbon tax also was a point of contention this summer as Democrats assembled the party platform, which ultimately called for greenhouse gas emissions to be "priced." Clinton's campaign distanced her from that language, at the time, with a senior adviser calling it "not her language."

Clinton camp prepped email statement: ‘It’s all there and then some’
As the furor over Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server built last year, her top aides mulled a statement saying they were confident that she’d given “all” her work-related emails to the State Department, according to a hacked email published Thursday.

“We’ve turned over all of her work email, and taken the extraordinary step of asking the State Department to release them. When they do, which we hope to be soon, it will offer an unprecedented opportunity for the American people to see it for themselves, and we’re confident that it will be clear that it’s all there and then some,” Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill wrote in a March 20, 2015 email to Clinton lawyers David Kendall, communications adviser Philippe Reines and longtime aide and former State Department Chief of Staff Cheryl Mills.

Clinton’s public assurances that she’d turned over all her work-related messages have become one of the most contentious points in the email controversy. Republicans have challenged the process Clinton’s lawyers used to sift messages related to her work as secretary of state from those that were personal. The FBI wound up recovering thousands of messages from other sources and old computer equipment during their investigation. The State Department is still trying to determine how many of those are duplicates.

It appears some of Clinton’s messages were deleted from her BlackBerry when she was secretary. Others from a few months at the beginning of her service as secretary were apparently never archived. Still others may have been missorted during the review process. FBI Director James Comey has said Clinton’s lawyers did not read all the messages, but primarily relied on the addressees and subject lines.

It’s not clear whether the statement the aides were working on was ever released in that form. However, similar language appeared in a column Clinton backer Donna Brazile wrote about a week before the Merrill email, which apparently ended up in campaign chairman John Podesta’s email account. “According to sources, ‘Secretary Clinton is the only former secretary to turn hers over. People will be able to see for themselves that it's all there, and then some,” Brazile wrote.

Clinton camp wanted Obama admin. officials fired over HealthCare.gov failure
Hillary Clinton’s allies wanted high-profile Obama administration officials to be fired after the release of HealthCare.gov, according to new emails released by WikiLeaks on Thursday.

“I think it was a strategic error not to fire anyone in health care,” longtime Clinton advisor Neera Tanden wrote in an email to campaign chairman John Podesta on March 16, 2014.

“In real life people would have gotten fired.”

No high-level head rolled over the HealthCare.gov website mess, which was considered a huge embarrassment for President Barack Obama’s team of tech savants who revolutionized campaigning in the tech age.

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius left the administration in April 2014, but that was months after the website was repaired and after the first Obamacare sign-up period hit its enrollment targets.

Tanden called out New Hampshire Congresswoman Carol Shea Porter for expressing particular discomfort with the decision.

“Carol Shea porter yelled at me about this for 10 min the other day,” she wrote. “…We are going to make public our call for a CEO.”

“I'm trying to be artful here bc of the WH Conference but I do think in real life people would have gotten fired a long time ago,” she wrote. “And not just people in the agency no one cares about.

Podesta, for his part, replied with a casual nod of approval. “Yup. Denis is going to call Howard.”

Two lower-level officials left the administration in late 2013, as the website was under repair. But neither were high profile names.

Tony Trenkle, the chief information officer at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, announced his retirement during the HealthCare.gov rollout. But administration officials said he was not forced out.

Michelle Snyder, who was the chief operating officer and No. 2 official at CMS, retired in late 2013.

Podesta to Clinton: Make peace with Richardson, even if he 'can be a dick'
John Podesta thought Hillary and Bill Clinton needed to make peace with former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, even if he'd heard Hillary Clinton was upset that he'd tried to bury the hatchet, according to hacked emails released by WikiLeaks.
“I had heard that you were upset that I encouraged a call between [Bill Clinton] and Richardson to bury the hatchet,” Podesta wrote to Hillary Clinton in August, 2015.
In the email, Podesta encourages Clinton to call Richardson and ask for an endorsement. That would mean putting aside a beef from the 2008 Democratic primary when Richardson, despite having served as Energy Secretary and Ambassador to the United Nations for Bill Clinton, endorsed Barack Obama. (It was a senator he saw “something special in,” Richardson said.)

The Clintons were reportedly furious, and at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, Richardson told ABC News that their feud was “permanent.”

Podesta, however, said he'd pushed for a detente at the behest of Jose Villarreal, Bill Clinton’s 1992 deputy campaign manager. And he said there might be merit in bringing Richardson back into the fold.

“I did that at the request of Jose Villarreal who pushed me and made the point that Richardson is still on TV a lot, especially on Univision and Telemundo and not withstanding the fact that he can be a dick, it was worth getting him in a good place,” he wrote. "Probably worth a quick call to ask him to stay stout and publicly endorse, but if it's too galling, don't bother."

It's unclear whether Clinton called, but Richardson's support for her candidacy became public two days after Podesta allegedly sent the email.

And now, Richardson's camp is working hard to ensure that the hacked emails — and the revelation that Podesta said he can be "a dick" — doesn't bother him.

Before POLITICO reached out about writing an article on the email, Richardson's team emailed this statement:

"I strongly support Hillary Clinton for President. I do not care about any characterization of me made in an email. I have worked with John Podesta for many years and am neither concerned nor unhappy about this email repartee. I fully respect John and recognize the difficult job he has. I say this as someone who is neither seeking nor expecting any appointment or role in a Clinton White House, as evidenced by the emails."

Tanden saw Glass-Steagall fight as a loser for Clinton

As the Democratic primary campaign was just heating up, a longtime adviser to Hillary Clinton admitted she was at a loss to explain how the former Secretary of State would best Sen. Bernie Sanders in a debate over dismantling banks, according to the latest batch of WikiLeaks emails.

In an unverified July 18, 2015, email, Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden appears to flag for campaign chairman John Podesta comments the Vermont senator had made about the Glass-Steagall Act, which separated commercial and investment banking.

A day earlier, Sanders had made clear that he supported a proposal from Sen. Elizabeth Warren that would bring back the Depression-era law, which former President Bill Clinton helped repeal.

"I really don't know how she wins this point in the debate," Tanden said. "And he will clearly hit her and hit her hard. Has someone polled this issue. Is it actually unpopular?"

"People don't get it so it's not like sending people to jail, which people really love," Podesta said in response.

"They will get it once the two of them have fought over it in a debate. And Warren will be the water diviner on that dispute," Tanden then said.

Clinton navigated the Democratic primaries without endorsing a reinstatement of Glass-Steagall.

A separate email released Thursday further illustrates Warren's interactions with the Clinton campaign. A January 2015 email from Clinton aide Dan Schwerin describes outreach from Warren aide Dan Geldon, who was trying to clarify the intent of a speech his boss had made.

At issue was a Wall Street Journal story that described the speech as "loaded with not-terribly-veiled references to Hillary Clinton and attacks on Bill Clinton’s record as president." Clinton backer Lynn Forester de Rothschild had flagged the story for the campaign, saying, "We need to craft the economic message for Hillary so that Warren's common inaccurate conclusions are addressed."

But Schwerin said Geldon had already tried to clarify the meaning of the speech, saying the WSJ's write-up was "extraordinarily aggressive" and took liberties with the interpretation.

'Apologies are like her Achilles heel' top adviser said about Clinton

A longtime adviser to Hillary Clinton said “apologies are like her Achilles heel” in emails hacked from Clinton campaign chair John Podesta and released by WikiLeaks.

“Everyone wants her to apologize. And she should. Apologies are like her Achilles heel,” Neera Tanden said in a chain with Podesta originally unearthed by Vice News.

Earlier in the chain, Podesta complained about how the press was treating Clinton’s apology.

“No good deed goes unpunished. Press takeaway was the whine of but ‘she really didn't apologize to the American people,'" he said. “I am beginning to think Trump is on to something.”

Podesta and Tanden also discussed Clinton’s apparent struggle with a complete apology in a later email thread.

“This apology thing has become like a pathology,” Tanden wrote. “I can only imagine what's happening in the campaign.”

“Tell her to say it and move on, why get hung on this,” Podesta replied.

Americans who think they live in a democracy are hilarious. The majority of people are stupid, and many of those are ignorant as well. There's no democracy available, your choice for exit is a 3 sided box.

Assange in 2006:

In “Conspiracy as Governance (http://cryptome.org/0002/ja-conspiracies.pdf),” which Assange posted to his blog in December 2006, the leader of then-new WikiLeaks describes what he considered to be the most effective way to attack a conspiracy—including, as he puts it, that particular form of conspiracy known as a political party.

“Consider what would happen if one of these parties gave up their mobile phones, fax and email correspondence—let alone the computer systems which manage their [subscribers], donors, budgets, polling, call centres and direct mail campaigns. They would immediately fall into an organisational stupor and lose to the other.”

And how to induce that “organisational stupor?” Foment the fear that any correspondence could leak at any time.

“The more secretive or unjust an organization is, the more leaks induce fear and paranoia in its leadership and planning coterie. This must result in minimization of efficient internal communications mechanisms (an increase in cognitive ‘secrecy tax’) and consequent system-wide cognitive decline resulting in decreased ability to hold onto power as the environment demands adaptation.”

as Roy reminds us, this "civilized political establishment" has never existed. That Trump is an odious character does nothing to change this fact.

"Forget the genocide of American Indians,

forget slavery,

forget Hiroshima,

forget Cambodia,

forget Vietnam,"

Roy said to Cusack, lamenting the historical amnesia — both willful and not — of the powerful and the punditry.

"I can't understand those people who believe that the excesses are just aberrations."

Excesses, in Roy's view, are embedded in the very concept of empire.

"Isn't the greatness of great nations directly proportionate to their ability to be ruthless, genocidal?" Roy writes. "Doesn't the height of a country's 'success' usually also mark the depths of its moral failure?"

Clinton criticized staff for sending over "poll-tested" speech lines
Just days before her first major campaign rally, Hillary Clinton vented to her staff for feeding her "poll-tested lines that don't work," according to hacked emails posted by Wikileaks.

Clinton speechwriter Dan Schwerin described a call from the candidate in which she "expressed a fair amount of frustration with how things are going."

"She said we've given a series of very good policy speeches and in between we just keep giving her poll-tested lines that don't work, like make the middle class mean something," Schwerin said in the June 8, 2015 email with the subject line "HRC Reactions."

Schwerin appears to be referring to a speech Clinton would later deliver on Roosevelt Island in New York on June 13, when she held the first official rally of her presidential bid. Clinton, according to Schwerin, insisted on including in her theme "Four Fights," which she would then connect to Franklin Roosevelt's "Four Freedoms."

"[O]h, and by the way, she had to come up with it herself because we didn't give her anything better," he noted. "I can probably graft on a light "four fights" structure onto the second half without actually changing much at all. The front half is the challenge as was evident on the call last night when there was still so little consensus."

Clinton lawyer sought to cast doubt on Broaddrick's rape allegation
A tweet in January in which an Arkansas woman reiterated her claim that Bill Clinton raped her in 1978 prompted a longtime personal lawyer for the Clintons, David Kendall, to gather material casting doubt on the allegation, according to a hacked email released Saturday.

“I was 35 years old when Bill Clinton, Ark. Attorney General raped me and Hillary tried to silence me. I am now 73....it never goes away,” retired Arkansas nurse Juanita Broaddrick wrote on Twitter on January 6, 2016.

Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta apparently spoke with Kendall about the issue that night, with Kendall sending Podesta an email the following day entitled, “History of Juanita Broaddrick Allegations.”

Kendall attached several documents and said he was pulling his old files on the case to get more information. The memos he attached show that in 1998 Broaddrick signed an affidavit denying that the alleged rape ever took place. The affidavit was filed to try to head off a subpoena for Broaddrick’s testimony in connection with Paula Jones’ sexual harassment suit against Bill Clinton.

However, when Independent Counsel Ken Starr began looking into the episode, he offered Broaddrick immunity and she reversed course, saying that the rumors Clinton raped her were true. “Starr was seeking more evidence against the President, any way he could, and he immunized Broaddrick to protect her from any prosecution for perjury if she now changed her story. Voila! She did,” Kendall wrote.

Kendall also sent along a statement he issued in 1999, when NBC News aired an interview in which Broaddrick maintained the rape had occurred. In the statement, the Clinton lawyer denied any rape occurred, but seemed to leave open the possibility of a consensual encounter.

"Any allegation that the president assaulted Mrs. Broaddrick more than 20 years ago is absolutely false," Kendall said then. Bill Clinton was asked about the incident at a press conference and deferred to his lawyer's statement.

Broaddrick, who appeared with other Clinton accusers and Donald Trump prior to this week’s presidential debate, also asserts that Hillary Clinton threatened her to keep quiet about the incident. Kendall’s email does not address that claim.

Bloomberg aide suggested the former NYC mayor wanted to be Hillary Clinton’s secretary of state
A former aide to Michael Bloomberg suggested the former mayor was hoping to be secretary of state in a Hillary Clinton administration, according to hacked emails released Saturday by WikiLeaks.

In an email exchange between Bloomberg aide Howard Wolfson and Clinton ally Neera Tanden, Wolfson affirmed Bloomberg was not running — despite a New York Post article titled “NY Dems push Bloomberg to run for president” published months after the former New York City mayor rejected rumors he would launch a presidential campaign of his own.

Tanden, who runs the liberal think tank the Center for American Progress, said she was relieved and asked if there’s a foreign policy position that Bloomberg would consider under a possible Clinton administration.

Is there something Mike Bloomberg would want to do in his life in an Admin? Is like Ambassador to China way too small?”

Wolson responded candidly: “Secty of state Which ain't gonna happen,” he wrote.

Tanden forwarded the email chain to Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta, who has been the recipient of WikiLeaks’ release of their week-long hack of his personal email account.

“Something to know for down the road,” she wrote.

Bloomberg, a moderate Republican mayor but staunch Donald Trump critic, later spoke at the Democratic National Convention, condemning Trump and asking fellow Republicans to join him in supporting Clinton.

When POLITICO reached out to Bloomberg, a response came from Wolfson: "I think Mike made it pretty clear that the job he wanted was the top job.”

(Wolfson clarified the "top job" he referred to was President of the United States.)

Clinton team mulled joint Bill Clinton-George W. Bush immigration interview
In the month before Hillary Clinton launched her campaign, her husband's team was mulling sitting Bill Clinton down with predecessor George W. Bush to for a Univision interview on immigration.

Hacked emails released by WikiLeaks show Bill Clinton's chief of staff Tina Flournoy and Hillary Clinton's soon-to-be communications director Jennifer Palmieri — along with Clinton Campaign Chairman John Podesta — considered former president George W. Bush to be something of an ally on the subject, at least enough that they thought about doing a joint interview with Univision's Jorge Ramos.

"Actually, I'm ok with this, but would need some prep," wrote Podesta of the proposal for the former commanders-in-chief to sit down in May.

"Seems that with his brother out there as a candidate, it is higher stakes for 43 to be talking about immigration, partic w/ WJC," wrote Palmieri.

Flournoy's response: "43 is soooooo good on it. Really good. At least he has been when I’ve seen him talk about it with 42." (43 is a reference to Bush, the 43 president, and 42 is reference to Bill Clinton.)

The interview, however, never happened — and before long Donald Trump entered the race with a speech in which he denounced some Mexican immigrants as “murderers" and "rapists."

Clinton, Sanders teams both wanted Larry David's endorsement
Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders both courted the endorsement of comedian Larry David -- who played Sanders better than Sanders throughout the primary on “Saturday Night Live" -- and he declined to get on board with either team, according to hacked emails released Saturday by WikiLeaks.

“can you figure out whether he's for her or Bernie?” Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta emailed his colleague Sara Latham on Oct. 22, 2015, a week after David played Sanders in "Saturday Night Live's" parody of the first presidential debate.

Latham responded that deputy communications director Kristina Schake was going to ask director Rob Reiner, a longtime Clinton supporter, “before we ask someone like [Hollywood agent Michael] Kives who has a big mouth.”

Schake followed up with disappointing news. “Rob spoke to Larry who said he isn't endorsing anyone because he is going to keep playing Bernie on SNL,” she wrote. “Bernie's campaign contacted him right after the skit to ask him to endorse and he declined.”

Bill Clinton pressured FDA to get dying donor access to experimental cancer drug
Former President Bill Clinton, Sen. John Kerry and other top Democrats pressured FDA and a pharmaceutical company to get a top donor access to an experimental cancer medicine, according to hacked emails released by Wikileaks Saturday.

In 2008, Clinton and Kerry, along with former Sens. Max Baucus and Tom Harkin, worked Washington lobbyists, board members and shareholders for the drug company Biogen, helping to arrange conversations between then-FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach and company CEO James Mullen. They were working to get Dallas fundraiser Fred Baron access to Biogen’s drug Tysabri to treat his bone marrow cancer.

They also reached out to top Biogen shareholders and Democratic donors with connections to the Mayo Clinic, the hospital he was being treated at.

Baron’s wife Lisa Blue Baron pushed for the politicians help, threatening to take out a full ad in the Boston Globe against the Massachusetts based company if it didn’t assist, the emails reveal.

The effort appeared to help persuade FDA’s to provide assurances to the drug company that they would turn a blind eye to any negative effects experienced by Baron when evaluating the drug, but Biogen continued to say no.

It’s unclear why the drug, which was already FDA approved for multiple sclerosis, couldn’t have been provided to Baron without FDA or the company’s approval. Doctors are legally allowed to use FDA approved treatments for conditions not approved by FDA.

Ultimately it was Nancy Pelosi — who worked with FDA and the Mayo Clinic to get the drug administered without the company’s consent, according to the Dallas Morning News but it was unsuccessful in saving Baron’s life.

Baron, a prolific fundraiser best known for providing John Edwards with money to conceal his affair, died October 30, 2008 at age 61.

The disclosure comes amid a nationwide push for “Right-to-Try” laws that allow terminally ill patients to skirt FDA’s compassionate use process when requesting access to experimental medicines. More than half the states have passed such laws with huge bipartisan support, but in late September Senate Majority leader Harry Reid blocked Sen. Ron Johnson’s effort to get a similar law through the Senate.

The staff army behind a Clinton tweet
How many campaign staffers does it take to craft a 140-character message about Puerto Rico? Up to 11, if you're Hillary Clinton.

Four years after Democrats mocked Mitt Romney's army of tweet-minders, Clinton's team deployed 11 people to hone a single tweet on Puerto Rico's debt crisis.

"Our goal with the tweet is to be empathetic to Puerto Ricans, make clear we are in this together b/c their health and well-being is ours and b/c many Americans hold PR municipal bonds as part of their retirement portfolios," wrote adviser Ann O'Leary. "We don't want to suggest a bailout, but we do want to suggest that we should partner to solve the problem"

Cc'ed on the email were senior aides Jake Sullivan, Amanda Renteria, John Podesta, Robby Mook, Milia Fisher, Dan Schwerin, Teddy Goff, Katie Dowd and Lauren Peterson. Later Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri was added.

O'Leary's suggested tweet: "Puerto Rico's debt crisis is not theirs alone. We must partner to find smart solutions to stabilize & grow PR's economy and help people thrive."

Renteria replied that the tweet lacked a "sense of the 'underlying problems' -- and she recommended adjustments.

Campaign manager Robby Mook suggested reaching out to the campaign's Puerto Rico allies to weigh in.

Again, Renteria replied. "Am doing. Been on phone for the last hour on and off."

"Tweet is good but we should do a statement tomorrow too," she said. "We will see. Weighing in is imp right now. Then a thoughtful statement with compassion and being smart will be better than what others have done."

Clinton team debates donations from lobbyists repping foreign interests

For five days in April 2015, the Clinton campaign seemed torn: should it accept bundled campaign donations from lobbyists for foreign governments?

"This is really a straight up political call," wrote Clinton lawyer Marc Elias in a chain that included campaign manager Robby Mook and senior aides John Podesta, Huma Abedin and Jennifer Palmieri. "One middle option is to take case by case. If, for example, they are [foreign government agents] registered for Canada, we may not case. If for N. Korea we would."

The hacked emails stolen from Podesta’s gmail account and posted by Wikileaks on Sunday show that aides were concerned about cracking down too harshly on lobbyist contributions -- for fear of being mocked, as Barack Obama was.

"Marc made a convincing case to me this am that these sorts of restrictions don't really get you anything...that Obama actually got judged MORE harshly as a result," Mook wrote. "He convinced me. So...in a complete U-turn, I'm ok just taking the money and dealing with any attacks."

Palmieri jumped in, "Take the money!!"

The decision was a tricky one, according to the emails, in part because the campaign already was accepting help. At one point, adviser Dennis Cheng wrote: "We do need to make a decision on this ASAP as our friends who happen to be registered with FARA are already donating and raising." FARA refers to the federal statute requiring registration of agents for foreign governments.

"A total ban feels arbitrary and will engender the same eye-rolling and ill will that it did for Obama," Elias said.

Another adviser, Karuna Seshasai, noted that 27 prospective bundlers were FARA-registered and more were signing up "daily." They also included some prominent Clinton allies, including Podesta's brother Tony. Seshasai noted that Tony Podesta's ties to Iraq, Azerbaijan and Egypt were worth reviewing, along with other bundlers with ties to Libya and the United Arab Emirates.

Jesse Ferguson, a Clinton communications aide, suggested that the campaign should consider how much money it would forfeit if it implemented a strict ban.

Clinton advisers frustrated she wouldn't apologize for emails

Hillary Clinton’s top aides worried privately that the candidate’s resistance to apologizing for the email controversy would create “a character problem.”

According to a new batch of hacked emails stolen from campaign chairman John Podesta’s gmail account and released Sunday by Wikileaks, adviser Neera Tanden lamented Clinton’s inability to simply convey remorse.

“I know this email thing isn't on the level. I'm fully aware of that. But her inability to just do a national interview and communicate genuine feelings of remorse and regret is now, I fear, becoming a character problem (more so than honesty),” adviser Neera Tanden wrote to Podesta on Aug. 22, 2015 in a note titled, “Emails – My thoughts.”

Tanden’s email came just days after a federal judge ruled that Clinton violated government policy by using a private server in her role as secretary of state.

Tanden emphasized that Clinton must show sincerity in her admission of regret.

“I see no downside in her actually just saying, look, I'm sorry. I think it will take so much air out of this.”

“She always sees herself bending to ‘their’ will when she hands over information, etc. But the way she has to bend here is in the remorse. Not the ‘if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't do it.’ A real feeling of - this decision I made created a mess and I'm sorry I did that,” Tanden wrote.

She went on to add that Clinton’s judgment – an attack Republicans have used against her throughout her campaign – is not the real concern.

“No one thinks she doesn't have the judgment to be president - she's not reaffirming a negative characteristic in saying sorry. She needs to do that - I see no way of moving on until October otherwise. Anyway, that's my advice.”

Podesta agreed, saying: “Jen and I are in the same place,” likely referring to communications director Jennifer Palmieri. “Trying to figure out how to get her there and best way to execute.”

Clinton’s resistance to apologizing plagued her campaign for months. Earlier hacked emails provide a glimpse into aides’ discomfort with Clinton’s inability to admit wrongdoing over emails.

“Apologies are like her Achilles heel. But she didn’t seem like a bitch in the interview. And she said the word sorry. She will get to a full apology in a few interviews,” Tanden wrote in Sept 4, 2015.

Clinton did not apologize until Sept. 8, when she said in an interview with ABC: “As I look back at it now, even though it was allowed, I should have used two accounts. That was a mistake. I’m sorry about that. I take responsibility.”

"Is there anyway to ballpark what percent of our donor base this would apply to (aka how much money we're throwing away) Cost benefits are easier to analyze with the costs. :)" he wrote.

Podesta congratulates White House on ‘sending the Keystone body to the morgue’

John Podesta congratulated White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough in November of last year on “finally sending the Keystone body to the morgue,” one day after President Barack Obama announced that he would reject the Keystone XL oil pipeline following a seven-year review.

In the emailed dated Nov. 7, Podesta wrote, “Congrats on finally sending the Keystone body to the morgue. Thought it ended up playing well and his statement was great. I've described it as I hate this chicken shit issue; now let me tell you what I think about the important issues of climate change and clean energy. Seriously, it was really good.”

The prior day, Obama delivered remarks from the White House, in which he said the project would have undercut America’s global leadership on fighting climate change.

McDonough replied that he was generally happy with the news coverage, but offered one caveat.

“Thought stories today were good, but for some former WH staff saying all sorts of things, mostly untrue. Thanks, Bill D.!” he wrote, possibly referring to former Obama chief of staff Bill Daley, who had been vocal about Keystone.

"Cheryl [Mills], Robby [Mook], Jake [Sullivan], Huma [Abedin], Jennifer [Palmieri] and I also did a first cut of people to consider for VP. I have organized names in rough food groups."

Here's the list, as organized by Podesta:

Clinton aides struck Israel from early stump speech

Hillary Clinton’s aides debated whether to include a shoutout to Israel in an early version of her stump speech, ultimately concluding that it wasn’t worth the possible blowback from Democratic activists.

According to a hacked email chain that begins on May 15, 2015, Clinton’s top policy aide, Jake Sullivan, found himself at odds with the former secretary of state’s political advisers when he suggested adding “a sentence on standing up for our allies and our values, including Israel and other fellow democracies, and confronting terrorists and dictators with strength and cunning.”

“I though this was largely for her TP with public events not fundraisers. Do we need Israel etc for that?” communications adviser Mandy Grunwald responded.

“We def need the etc. I think good to have Israel too,” Sullivan replied.

Chief strategist and pollster Joel Benenson chimed in: “Why would we call out Israel in public events now? The only voters elevating FP at all are Republican primary voters. To me we deal with this in stride when an if we are asked about FP.”

“She was Secretary of State,” Sullivan shot back.

“I'm w Joel,” wrote campaign manager Robby Mook. “We shouldn't have Israel at public events. Especially dem activists.”

Sullivan responded: “I won't fall on sword over Israel but we need more than climate in that paragraph.”

Speechwriter Dan Schwerin suggested using the following basic paragraph to outline her foreign policy, “and then she can drop in Israel when she's with donors”:

“Fourth and finally, we have to protect our country from the global threats that we see, from terrorists to dictators to diseases – and the ones that are still over the horizon. We have to assert confident American leadership to shape global events rather than be shaped by them. That includes taking on global warming and those who continue to deny that it exists. And it means always standing up for our allies and our values, especially our fellow democracies.”

“I'm fine w that,” said Mook.

“Good,” added Benenson.

Clinton aides thought the press would 'shift away' from covering her emails

Hillary Clinton’s campaign drafted a four-week plan to shape press coverage ahead of the official announcement of her presidential run, detailed to the point of when she would tweet and what stories her aides would pitch to reporters to distract them from the brewing controversy over her use of a private email server.

According to a hacked email exchange published by WikiLeaks, communications aide Jesse Ferguson sent campaign manager Robby Mook the memo that outlined the plans on March 13, 2015. She announced her presidential bid a month later, on April 12.

While it’s not clear if the memo was implemented as drafted, it shows the care Clinton aides took to micromanage every aspect of her rollout.

Noting that reporters “will write about her regardless of whether we choose to make news or not,” even though Clinton hadn’t yet announced plans to run, the memo advocated a proactive approach to dealing with the press in hopes of driving a positive message about her campaign. In particular, given the scrutiny surrounding Clinton’s private email server and her family foundation, the campaign wanted to “give” reporters assigned to following the former secretary of state “something to cover other than the unhelpful stories about the foundation, emails, etc.”

Besides keeping reporters busy, the memo called for putting Republicans “on defense” and “forc[ing] them to take bad positions” on issues, along with drumming up enthusiasm for Clinton’s candidacy among Democrats, as the campaign’s “strategic objectives” pre-launch.

To do that, Ferguson offered a range of suggestions. There were general plans, like challenging the actions of Republicans in Congress and enlisting supporters to write op-eds highlighting her agenda, and thoughts on overall strategy, like what tone to set on Twitter (“We want to ramp up HRC’s social media activity with simple commentary on articles of note, news of the day, and humor”).

Then the memo got into granular detail. It offered a “timeline of potential activities” leading up to the campaign launch, starting with actions that had already been taken (like a March 11 tweet about a letter Republicans signed on Iran), and then laid out plans for future messaging.

For example, according to the memo, on March 17, Clinton would respond to the Republican budget plan (“could be a joint online action with other Democratic leaders, a conference call with activists, a stop by at some location effected [sic] by Republican budget cuts or something of the like. At minimum, it would be a statement and a tweet”). Over the week of March 23, aides would arrange to meet with Washington reporters off-the-record and also pitch journalists stories about campaign staffing. Clinton, meanwhile, would commemorate the fifth anniversary of the 2010 healthcare overhaul (there would maybe be an event, and definitely a tweet).

The memo also acknowledged that the campaign might need to address news regarding Clinton’s position on the Trans-Pacific Partnership and any disclosed public records.

The memo’s authors, apparently, were optimistic that this strategy would work: On March 18, it proposed that aides “start pushing and pitching the background story that press coverage on HRC has shifted away from covering the situation with emails.”

The press, of course, is still covering the fallout from the email controversy some 19 months later.

Podesta on Rahm flipping out: 'Pressure' from shooting 'getting to him'

John Podesta suggested that the police shooting of Laquan McDonald was “getting to” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and caused him to lash out during a question about his travel plans at a POLITICO event in December.

In one of the hacked Podesta emails from WikiLeaks on Monday, Mae Podesta flagged the exchange between Emanuel and Playbook’s Mike Allen and Playbook Illinois’s Natasha Korecki.

“Did you see this super weird exchange about going to cuba?” Mae Podesta, the country director for The Clinton Foundation’s HIV/AIDS Initiative, wrote in the email to her father John, including a link to a Gawker.com story recounting the exchange.

“Woah….wtf?”

“Yes. Pressure of cop shooting getting to him,” John Podesta responded.

During the Dec. 2 breakfast, Allen asked Emanuel, “You take your young people on fascinating trips around the world, headed these holidays to Cuba. Why?”

That ticked off the Chicago mayor.

“Well, first of all, thanks for telling everybody what I’m going to do with my family,” Emanuel snapped back angrily. “You had a private conversation with me and now you decide to make that public.”

That response came after repeated questions from Korecki and Allen about the Emanuel administration’s handling of the Chicago police officer who fatally shot McDonald 16 times as the 17-year-old was walking away from police officers.

Clinton aides worried about a glass house on equal pay

Clinton insider Mandy Grunwald cautioned aides against spotlighting equal pay legislation as part of the former secretary of state's broader economic message in 2015.

“I'm queasy about leading with equal pay, given last week's stories about HRC staff,” Grunwald, a communications strategist, wrote in an email to senior campaign advisers including Jake Sullivan, Cheryl Mills and Huma Abedin in March 2015.

The email was included in the tenth and latest installment of hacked emails from campaign chairman John Podesta’s personal account, released by WikiLeaks on Monday. The Clinton campaign is not confirming individual emails, and has warned that some messages might have been altered.

In the email, Clinton’s communications director Jennifer Palmieri echoed Grunwald’s concerns.

“Agree with many of Mandy's comments - in partic staring with equal pay, having an women's economic issue soundbite, and making GOP section edgier,” she wrote.

Grunwald’s remarks appear to be over a report first published by the Washington Free Beacon in February 2015 finding that Clinton paid female staffers 72 cents for every dollar she paid men when serving as a senator in New York.

The Washington Free Beacon analysis, however, left out data based on annual salaries and from Clinton’s political committees, creating a false pay discrepancy, according to a report by BuzzFeed published in April 2015.

The report reviewed seven years of compensation information from 2002 to 2008 and found that Clinton paid men and women equally in all offices as a senator.

Hillary Clinton asked House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi for an endorsement almost a year before she got it, according to hacked emails released Tuesday by WikiLeaks.

In July of 2015, top Clinton aide Huma Abedin emailed campaign manager Robby Mook and campaign chairman John Podesta, detailing a conversation between Clinton and Pelosi.

“HRC asked for her endorsement and she didn’t say yes,” Abedin wrote in the July 16 email. “HRC said she felt it was a non-answer. Pelosi said she needed to focus on the democratic agenda.”

“That’s frustrating. But I think she will get big kudos for asking,” Mook wrote back.

Pelosi did not endorse Clinton until June 7, the day of the California Democratic primary and the day after the AP declared Clinton had beated Bernie Sanders and clinched the nomination

WikiLeaks: Hillary Wants Obamacare to ‘Unravel’
http://www.lifezette.com/polizette/wikileaks-hillary-wants-obamacare-unravel/

Hillary can take her admiration for Canadian single payer and pardon my expression - shove it.

My Canadian aunt was admitted to a hospital on a Thursday - her knee drained on Friday. They did not pinpoint the source of her ailment until the following Monday. And do you know what she had? A strep infection - that simple antibiotics could have cured but it took them so long that it spread in her blood to the major organs - my beloved aunt should be alive today. Also, they had her stop doing colonoscopies and mammograms at age 75 (even though she was a breast cancer survivor). So - no thanks to single payer.

typical BULLSHIT rightwingnut "reasoning" over a single anecdote.

"single payer" didn't kill your relative, an apparent medical error, or delay, did.

I bet you don't know, and won't admit, that USA's wealth-sucking health care system kills 50K+, even 100K, people EVERY YEAR DUE TO AVOIDABLE MEDICAL ERRORS, do you?

And 1000s die from want of medical care, and USA has the highest perinatal baby deaths of any industrial country, due to lack of perinatal care.

Misdiagnoses has been a fairly common thing here also. Pre and Post Obamacare. And there is still a lot of discussion how to deal with bad prostates in older men. There are a lot of difficult calls with older folks. The treatment, or even procedure, can often set them back more than leaving the people alone.

Sorry about your Aunt but 3-4 days to diagnose an invasive group A strep infection does not sound like an uncommon length of time even in the US. I don't support single payer but diseases don't really care about what healthcare model the country is using. It takes 2 days get the results of a strep culture and that's when the doctor is immediately suspecting a strep (throat) infection.

What is invasive group A streptococcal disease?

Invasive GAS disease is a severe and sometimes life-threatening infection in which the bacteria have invaded parts of the body, such as the blood, deep muscle and fat tissue or the lungs. Two of the most severe, but least common, forms of invasive GAS disease are called necrotizing fasciitis (infection of muscle and fat tissue) and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (a rapidly progressing infection causing low blood pressure/shock and injury to organs such as the kidneys, liver and lungs). Approximately 20 percent of patients with necrotizing fasciitis and 60 percent with STSS die. About 10-15 percent of patients with other forms of invasive group A streptococcal disease die.

What are the early signs and symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome?

Early signs and symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis include fever, severe pain and swelling, and redness at the wound site. Early signs and symptoms of STSS may include fever, dizziness, confusion, low blood pressure, rash and abdominal pain.

How common is invasive group A streptococcal disease?

Approximately 9,000-11,500 cases of invasive GAS disease occur in the United States each year resulting in 1,000-1,800 deaths. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that less than 10% of these are cases of necrotizing fasciitis and STSS. In contrast, there are several million cases of strep throat and impetigo annually

There's an outbreak of strep there so they should have suspected it. Two of my cousins' families had it when I went for the funeral. It's hitting senior homes (she didn't live in one) and her husband had been in the same hospital (for dehydration/vomiting/diarrhea) a week before - that's probably where she picked it up. She was admitted on a Thursday - even with 2 days - that's Saturday - 2 less days. Regarding single-payer, I'm more concerned about the (seeming) lack of testing at 75 - my mom is older than she is and still gets testing - average lifespan is 87 for women now - not 75. I'll get over it - time heals all wounds - it's just a bit raw now.

Strep infections are not as nearly as common as staph infections. No one really treats targets strep when doing broad spectrum antibiotics though if she was diabetic, she may have benefited from Zosyn which can treat Strep infections. It usually takes a culture 2-3 days to discover what bacteria causes the infection.

"Anyone over the age of 65 is already on s single payer system in the US."

and while USA lags other industrial countries in overall longevity, if Americans can make it to 65, go on Medicare, then their longevity is goes UP to where the other countries are.

Of course, the average American over 65 is on 5 to 10 subscription meds PER DAY, so BigPharma uses them at ATMs, esp in nursing homes.

Any single payer system could be augmented with additional coverage. If there is a demand, the private market will fill the gap.

rmt
10-19-2016, 08:50 AM
Th'Pusher - to clarify - with Medicare Advantage/Gap (certain ones), Medicare is not like single payer in Canada or even Obamacare (with its limited networks) - iirc, you can pretty much go to any doctor in any part of the country - like how my PPO used to be before Obamacare.

10-19-2016, 09:01 AM
Any single payer system could be augmented with additional coverage. If there is a demand, the private market will fill the gap.

I think the article I posted explains the cost controls in HillaryCare and why it failed to pass - that loss of freedom. Medicare is supposed to be funded by 40+? years of employer/employee deductions (actually it's funded by current employees'/employers' deductions) and even then, it will soon be in trouble. So single payer for the entire rest of the population will cost some serious amount of money - who then but the very, very rich be able to afford that additional coverage? The only reason my mother, father and mother-in-law can afford Medicare Advantage/Gap is because 80% of their medical cost is being covered by Medicare funds - that would not be the case for single payer for the rest of us.

rmt
10-19-2016, 09:13 AM
Here's the pertaining section:

The decisions of HillaryCare’s National Control Board, which would have determined every allowable benefit and treatment, would have been final—not reviewable by any agency or judge. What finally broke the back of HillaryCare was the provision imposing civil penalties for providing treatments not allowed by the regional cooperative and criminal penalties for accepting a separate payment for providing such care within a cooperative.

Families were forced to pay into the regional cooperatives and medical providers had to provide all medical care through the cooperatives or operate completely outside them. Since few families could afford to pay the cooperative for health care and then pay for additional care, and few providers could afford to operate totally outside the system, any real health-care choice would have been extremely limited, very expensive and available only to the highest-income families. When challenged to defend the loss of freedom HillaryCare entailed, congressional support collapsed and no effort to resurrect it was made until ObamaCare.

Washington (CNN)A closed-door speech to Morgan Stanley in 2013, revealed in hacked emails posted by WikiLeaks, could stoke new questions for Hillary Clinton Wednesday night about whether she truly believes in the fiscal sustainability of the promises she is making on the campaign trail. In the speech, Clinton referred to the 2010 Simpson-Bowles deficit reduction plan as "the right framework," a stance that is seemingly at odds with her 2016 platform. Throughout the year, Clinton has been decidedly to the left of Simpson-Bowles, which called for a series of changes including changing the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67, raising the Social Security retirement age from 67 to 69 and cutting the growth of future benefits. While the general election has been seemingly void of policy issues, the future of Social Security and Medicare may come up at Wednesday's final presidential debate, where "debt and entitlements" are one of six pre-selected topics.

Lessig defends Tanden, who wanted to 'kick the s--- out of him on Twitter'

If Lawrence Lessig is angry that Neera Tanden expressed a desire to "kick the shit out of him on Twitter," he's not saying so publicly.

Instead, Lessig publicly expressed support for Tanden, who's head of the Center for American Progress and has seen many of her private emails made public via WikiLeaks.

"We all deserve privacy. The burdens of public service are insane enough without the perpetual threat that every thought shared with a friend becomes Twitter fodder. Neera has only ever served in the public (and public interest) sector. Her work has always and only been devoted to advancing her vision of the public good. It is not right that she should bear the burden of this sort of breach," Lessig wrote Tuesday on his blog.

Lessig's post does defend some leaks, however: "I’m a big believer in leaks for the public interest. That’s why I support Snowden, and why I believe the President should pardon him. But I can’t for the life of me see the public good in a leak like this — at least one that reveals no crime or violation of any important public policy."

Lessig's response comes after WikiLeaks published a hacked email exchange between Tanden and John Podesta, Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman. The August 2015 exchange took place while Lessig was mulling a challenge to Clinton in the Democratic primary. (Lessig entered the race in September before dropping out shortly after, as his race was aimed not at winning but in order to push campaign finance reform.)

The published exchange has three parts, opening with Tanden emailing Podesta: "The smugness of Larry Lessig.

Podesta replies: “An everyday American pompous law professor.”

Tanden comes back with: "I fucking hate that guy. Like I'd like to kick the shit out of him on twitter...but I know that is dumb."

Lessig is a Harvard University Law School professor and author of a prominent activist calling for policies that reduce the influence of money is politics.

Clinton aide worried about 'demagoguing' on revolving door

Hillary Clinton's campaign advisers disagreed about how tough the former Secretary of State should be when it came to the "revolving door" that circulates people between jobs in Washington and Wall Street, according to email conversations released by WikiLeaks.

The dispute arose in a string of August 2015 messages - unverified by the campaign - where aides provided input on an op-ed that Clinton planned to publish with Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.).

The piece, which later ran on the Huffington Post, was written in support of a bill Baldwin had introduced in the Senate to slow the revolving door and restrict companies from giving bonuses to departing employees headed into government.

Top Clinton policy aide Jake Sullivan said he was worried that the thrust of the op-ed was "if you work in the private sector and come into government, you are an inherently suspicious character."

Campaign manager Robby Mook pushed back, suggesting that a tougher tone would help in the Democratic primaries.

"I don't think the average voter will be sensitive to alienating people who go in and out of government. My concern from a primary perspective is appearing to protect the status quo, which I think people will believe (with a bit of prompting from Warren and others) is corrupted," Mook said, likely referring to Sen. Elizabeth Warren. The Massachusetts Democrat had been promoting the legislation as "as a bill any presidential candidate should be able to cheer for."

Sullivan conceded, "I know that I sound like I am protecting the plutocrats."

"But there is a line here," he added. "If we go across it we're just demagoguing."

Campaign chief financial officer Gary Gensler, a former Wall Street regulator and Goldman Sachs partner, offered his inside perspective.

Gensler suggested deleting language about making sure that Washington policymakers were "not trying to enrich themselves" and replacing it with making sure officials were "not worrying about former or future bosses" at the public's expense.

The change, he said, "more accurately captures what can happen and lowers tone."

Eric Schmidt, the chief executive of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is working directly with Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, according to a memo contained within an email released by WikiLeaks.

“Discreet conservations” of forming “working relationships” with companies such as Facebook and Apple were also facilitated as early as October 2014, the memo stated. This is at least six months prior to when Clinton announced her candidacy for president.

The document was attached to an Oct. 26, 2014 email sent from Robby Mook, now Clinton’s campaign manager, to Cheryl Mills, a longtime Clinton aide; David Plouffe, Barack Obama’s previous campaign manager; and John Podesta, Clinton’s current campaign chairman whose email account was compromised.

Clinton was considered for Obama's HHS Secretary

Hillary Clinton was floated as a candidate for HHS Secretary, as well as Secretary of State, in a potential Barack Obama administration, according to hacked emails published Thursday by WikiLeaks.

Clinton's name appeared on a list of several women who were being recommended for senior-level positions in the event that Obama was elected. The correspondence occurred between Michael Froman — now the U.S. Trade Representative — and Obama in October 2008. Kathleen Sebelius, Obama's first HHS Secretary and a former governor of Kansas, also appears on the list as a candidate to lead HHS or the Labor Department.

A separate list attached to the email names African American, Asian and Latino candidates for cabinet-level or other senior positions. Froman wrote that the names listed were of individuals who "have been recommended by a number of sources."

The White House has declined to comment on the content of the emails or confirm their authenticity.

Clinton allies fretted over ‘Warren primary’ on Wall Street plans

Hillary Clinton’s allies carefully charted a Wall Street regulation plan that would survive what they termed “the Warren primary,” according to hacked emails published by WikiLeaks.

At issue was the 1933 Glass-Steagall Act, which separated commercial and investment banking until its repeal by former President Bill Clinton.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts Democrat who for many is the party's liberal standard-bearer, has called for reinstating the law as a way to crack down on big banks. Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Vermont senator who was Hillary Clinton's main rival in the Democratic primaries, supported the idea.

Ron Klain, vice president Joe Biden's former chief of staff, suggested a way to "avoid the flip flop, but survive the Warren primary," according to an October 2015 email.

He said Clinton "should move 95% to Warren" on Glass-Steagall by saying:

" Of course I wouldn't bring back Glass Steagall -- that's a law written 80 years ago before we had anything like the current banking system. But I agree with Sen. Warren that -- given the ongoing misconduct in the banking industry -- we need to erect a wall between banking and non-banking activities. If I became President, I would sit down with her and develop a 21st century version of Glass Steagall that provides sound separation between basic banking and riskier activities, but still keeps America's financial institution's competitive."

(Warren has drafted a bill dubbed "the 21st Century Glass-Steagall Act" that is intended to downsize "too-big-to-fail" banks.)

Some Clinton allies had been fretting about how to respond to the progressive push to reinstate Glass-Steagall, the WikiLeaks emails illustrate. Clinton ultimately declined to endorse the proposal.

In September 2015, Center for American Progress President Neera Tanden wrote in an email that "this is the closest thing to an Iraq vote we have to face us" and "a big potential problem in the debate."

Tanden suggested that Clinton say, "if banks are growing too big to manage and we need to take these steps ... believe me I will work to reinstate glass steagall in a heartbeat."

On TPP, Clinton advisors argued over 'huge flip flop'

Days before Hillary Clinton announced her opposition to the Trans-Pacific partnership, her campaign was divided over whether she could afford to oppose the trade pact she'd long worked to advance, according to hacked emails published by WikiLeaks.

Ron Klain, Vice President Joe Biden's former chief of staff and an outside advisor to Clinton's campaign, warned in October of 2015 that it would be a "huge flip flop" to break with the trade agreement that President Barack Obama was championing.

"* She has to be for TPP*. She called it the "gold standard" of trade agreements. I think opposing that would be a huge flip flop. She can say that as President she would work to change it. She can say that it can be better. But I think she should support it," Klain wrote in an email.

(Asked about the exchange, Klain replied: "I'm not going to comment on the Wikileaks given the source, but I believe that Secretary Clinton made the right call on TPP.")

Jake Sullivan, a senior policy advisor to Clinton, responded to agree with Klain, but noted others on the email chain "feel strongly to the contrary."

Robby Mook, Clinton's campaign manager, warned backing TPP would cost the campaign support from organized labor.

"TPP would be lethal with labor. We'd [lose] afscme and likely seiu as well," he wrote, referring to the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees and Service Employees International Union.

Four days later, on October 7, Clinton announced her opposition to the trade pact.

“What I know about it as of today, I am not in favor of what I have learned about it,” Clinton said at the time. “I’ve tried to learn as much as I can about the agreement, but I’m worried.”

On October 23, AFSCME endorsed Clinton for president. On November 17, the SEIU endorsed Clinton as well.

David Brock is an 'unhinged soulless narcissist' according to Neera Tanden

Longtime Clinton ally Neera Tanden had harsh words for David Brock, a former Clinton antagonist turned staunch supporter, in an email conversation with John Podesta released by WikiLeaks.

Tanden was discussing a POLITICO Playbook exclusive interview with Brock, where Brock said Clinton was preparing for a general election matchup with Donald Trump — in early January, before any primary votes were cast.

Their email conversation was part of the latest WikiLeaks release of Podesta's hacked emails. Democrats assert that WikiLeaks is working with Russia to try to unduly influence the election.

“David Brock is like a menace,” Tanden vented to Podesta. “I can think of no worse message for Hillary right now than she's preparing for the general.”

“I continue to believe he's the manchurian candidate of the GOP — secretly out to tank her,” she continued.

Podesta asked her if she truly believed that or if Brock was just an “unhinged narcissist” and Tanden replied that “I truly believe he's an unhinged soulless narcissist.”

She added that she doesn’t actually think Brock is actively trying to sink Clinton “because I'm not actually a conspiracy theorist like David Brock.”

Summers gave Clinton campaign 'worst advice ever' on banking

Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers -- derided by the left for his role in financial deregulation during Bill Clinton's presidency -- tried to steer Hillary Clinton's campaign away from "bank bashing" during the Democratic primaries, according to the latest batch of WikiLeaks emails.

Summers reached out to top campaign staff and even Bill Clinton himself after a Jan. 17 primary debate in South Carolina. During the debate, Clinton called out Bernie Sanders for voting in favor of a bill that kept part of the derivatives market unregulated going into the 2008 financial crisis. Summers served as Treasury secretary when Bill Clinton signed the legislation into law.

But campaign chairman John Podesta did not appear eager to adopt Summers' suggestions, which included steering Clinton away from attacking Sanders, an outspoken Wall Street critic, over the derivatives bill.

"Worst advice ever," Podesta wrote to Bill Clinton chief of staff Tina Flournoy. "Wrong then, wrong now."

The morning after the debate, Summers sent his thoughts to campaign aides, including chief financial officer Gary Gensler. Gensler also worked in Bill Clinton's Treasury Department but later became a financial regulator revered by the left for his crackdown on derivatives traders during the Obama administration.

Summers said attacking Sanders for the 2000 derivatives bill was a "poor idea." He pointed out that Bill Clinton supported the bill, that Gensler could also be cast that way, and that Hillary Clinton herself had success trading derivatives.

Summers suggested a few alternatives, including a message outlining that "every other country has large financial institutions that support its job creating companies" and that "the greatest economy in the world needs to be able to support its national champions."

In terms of future attacks on Sanders, Summers suggested that the Vermont senator was vulnerable on housing finance and the post-crisis Troubled Asset Relief Program, which is often criticized by both the left and many Republicans as a "bank bailout."

"It's probably too sophisticated an argument, but it is true that without big and therefore diversified banks the oil regions of the country would be headed into a catastrophic credit crunch," Summers said.
He followed up with an e-mail to Bill Clinton.

"In general u need to shift the debate from who can bash the banks harder to who can promote the economy better," he said. "You will never beat him on bank bashing."

Podesta aide wanted Foxx endorsement messages kept on personal email

As Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx prepared to endorse Hillary Clinton for president earlier this year, a top aide to Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta apparently instructed a colleague to make sure to email him about the matter at his personal account not his official government one, according to a hacked email released Wednesday by WikiLeaks.

“If you want to tee up a draft email from his gmail to Foxx's personal email not .gov, attach the docs etc...thx,” Podesta chief of staff Sara Latham wrote to campaign aide Milia Fisher.

The message to Foxx was being prepared January 6, five days before Foxx endorsed Clinton during a trip to Iowa. The aides attached a copy of Labor Secretary Tom Perez’s endorsement speech, details on Clinton’s infrastructure-building proposals and some generic Clinton camp talking points.

The aides don’t appear to discuss why the communication should be directed to Foxx’s personal email account, but the Hatch Act generally requires federal employees to separate their official duties from political activities and not to expend government resources on partisan political campaigns. Sending the message to the cabinet official’s personal account would also reduce the chance of it becoming available under the Freedom of Information Act.

During President George W. Bush’s administration, White House aides used a Republican National Committee-established server set up to handle political communications, purportedly in an effort to abide by Hatch Act restrictions. Millions of those messages went missing during Bush’s term, but most of them were apparently recovered by the National Archives in 2009.

Doug Band is the best ... according to Doug Band

Doug Band is a hard-working business leader who should be admired for his loyalty to the Clintons, his networking skills and his ability to build his own ventures, according to a fawning letter found in John Podesta's hacked emails that was released by WikiLeaks on Wednesday.

But, there's a catch. Podesta didn't write the letter — Band himself did.

In late September 2013, Band sent a nearly 900-word email detailing his accomplishments at an “astonishingly young age” to Podesta, in an effort to get the chairman of Hillary Clinton's campaign to sign the self-praising note.

“For those of you who only know about him from the press coverage he received last week, it only felt right to take the time to help set the record straight and talk about Doug from the perspective of someone who knows him well, especially since Doug is a private person who would never do this himself,” Band wrote about himself.

The letter credited Band with founding the Clinton Global Initiative and consulting firm Teneo, as well as praised him for remaining loyal to former President Bill Clinton despite receiving a high paying job offer elsewhere.

“Doug turned down a lucrative job at Goldman Sachs to help the President transition into private life, even in the midst of a difficult time when President Clinton’s approval rating was lower than it had ever been, and many had left the President’s side for greener pastures. The decision Doug made to stick with the President was made out of loyalty, and I always admired that,” Band wrote.

Band also spoke generally about his “global perspective,” adding that “a long list of people” – from departing world leaders to college students – rely on his advice.

“He has a truly global perspective, he knows how to make things happen, and he works harder than anyone else,” he wrote. “How many people do you know that can credit Doug with helping them find their job, decide where to attend school or grow professionally? I can tell you it’s a long list of people.”

Band, who submitted a draft to Podesta for approval, also touted his ability to act independently: “Doug doesn’t need to build a firm on the back of anyone: anyone who knows him knows that his own talents are more than enough.”

“I don’t often write emails like this, but sometimes when you see a wrong, you feel compelled to right it. That’s the case here, and even though Doug will probably hate everything I just wrote, someone needed to set the record straight, and I’m glad I had the chance to do it,” he concluded.

McGinty emailed Podesta for Senate advice

Pennsylvania Democratic Senate candidate Katie McGinty emailed John Podesta, her former colleague in the Clinton White House, asking for advice on challenging GOP Sen. Pat Toomey, according to a message in WikiLeaks' hacked trove of Podesta's emails.

"Hey John," McGinty wrote on July 17, 2015. "Emilys List and DSCC have been working me hard re a US Senate run. Would love your perspective. Will need to decide one way or other by mid next week."

Podesta responded about 20 minutes later: "I'll call."

McGinty ultimately announced her run in early August, won a contested Democratic primary, and is now locked in a tight race with Toomey. EMILY's List played the leading role in recruiting McGinty into the contest, endorsing her almost immediately. The DSCC ultimately endorsed her a few weeks before the April primary and spent millions helping her come from behind against former Rep. Joe Sestak.

McGinty worked as the chair of the Council on Environmental Quality from 1995 to 1998, when Podesta was President Bill Clinton's deputy chief of staff and then chief of staff.

Democrats and U.S. government officials have said there is evidence the Russian government supplied the hacked emails to WikiLeaks.

That is why the Moroccan episode is such a quintessentially Clinton controversy. It’s not as if they are tone-deaf politicians. Like so many other “scandals”—from the alleged renting out of the Lincoln bedroom in 1990s, to the pardon of Marc Rich, to Hillary’s use of a private email server—the Clintons seem to know that what they are doing will look bad and raise questions of ethics and corruption, and yet convinced of their own righteousness, they do it anyway. And the fact that these lapses continue to repeat themselves so long into their time in the public arena offers little hope that the next four years of a possible Clinton White House would be any different.https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/10/hillary-clinton-foundation-morocco-wikileaks/505043/

Political norms such as civility, respecting elected officials, allowing Presidents to make appointments (elections have consequences, right?) avoiding the appearance of impropriety, and conceding clear election results to promote the peaceful transition of power, matter.

When norms fail, institutions do too.

Trey Gowdy caught using his own private email server
It turns out Trey Gowdy has been running his [email protected] email address through a private email server, despite

giving that address (http://www.liberalamerica.org/2015/10/24/hypocrite-much-turns-out-benghazi-chairman-trey-gowdy-also-uses-a-private-email-server/) out as an official point of contact and almost certainly receiving official government correspondence through that address.

Additionally his

republican colleague Jason Chaffetz has been caught giving out a Gmail address for official correspondence, which is also run through a private email server.

One wonders if we’ll see an eighteen month investigation into their email as well.

Newsweek reporter Kurt Eichenwald was in the process of figuring out that the key email in question didn’t really come from Blumenthal.

How did Eichenwald figure it out? He realized that the email attributed to Blumenthal was actually something that he himself had written.

In other words WikiLeaks took a journalist’s words that were critical of Hillary Clinton and falsified them to make it appear that those words had come from within the Clinton camp itself.

This represents absolutely proof that WikiLeaks is in fact leaking phony “Hillary Clinton emails” in an attempt to make her look bad. Or as Eichenwald puts it, “WikiLeaks is compromised.”

Nikki *Obama To Upgrade Malaysia On Human Rights Despite Mass Graves* The Huffington Post By Zach Carter July 8, 2015 at 10:59pm

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration will remove Malaysia from its official list of the world's worst human trafficking offenders, according to Reuters< http://ca.reuters.com/article/topNews/idCAKCN0PJ00F20150709?pageNumber=1&virtualBrandChannel=0>, a move human rights advocates fear will damage U.S. credibility. The maneuver would allow the administration to continue negotiating a controversial trade agreement with Malaysia and 10 other Pacific nations. Legislation authored by Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) effectively bars the U.S. from enacting trade deals with countries deemed "Tier 3" violators of human trafficking standards -- the worst of the worst in the State Department's formal reckoning of governments that facilitate modern-day slavery. Malaysia earned its spot on that list, alongside Iran and North Korea,< http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/226844.pdf> from years of human trafficking, including rampant sex slavery< http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/226847.pdf> and forced labor in the agriculture and the textile industries, according to 2014 State Department documents. Malaysia's electronics industry also is rife with forced labor< http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/06/02/obama-trade-malaysia_n_7495750.html>. This year, mass graves< http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/may/25/malaysia-migrant-mass-graves-police-reveal-139-sites-some-with-multiple-corpsesl> for trafficking victims were discovered in Malaysia near its northern border with Thailand. Reuters reports that Malaysia will soon be upgraded to a "Tier 2" country, allowing it to sidestep the ban imposed by the Menendez legislation. The State Department said it does not comment on its human trafficking list before it is formally issued. In a statement to HuffPost, Menendez said the maneuver would undermine the international legitimacy of America's human rights efforts. "If true, this manipulation of Malaysia’s ranking in the State Department’s 2015 TIP report would be a perversion of the trafficking list and undermine both the integrity of this important report as well as the very difficult task of confronting states about human trafficking," Menendez said in the statement. "The deplorable human trafficking crisis in Malaysia merits a global cry for action and justice -- not an attempt to sweep them under the rug for political expediency." Malaysia passed a law< http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/06/18/malaysia-human-trafficking_n_7616702.html> in June amid international controversy over its human trafficking record that would provide additional protections for victims. Human trafficking has long been illegal in Malaysia, however. The country's critics -- including the State Department -- have not focused on its legal standards, but on its willingness to enforce those standards. Human Rights Watch has persistently< http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/05/19/human-trafficking-tpp_n_7323044.html> criticized Obama administration efforts to undermine the Menendez language. Malaysia partially controls the Strait of Malacca< http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/05/30/malaysia-slavery-trade_n_7472682.html>, a key shipping lane for Middle Eastern oil bound for China. The Obama administration has repeatedly argued that its Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact is designed to contain China's growing economic clout.

There's a lot to respond to here, but first and foremost the premise is wrong. There is nothing wrong with anyone having personal email addresses or her emailing someone's private account or vice versa. Maybe she was wishing Jake a happy birthday. Or I was sending her a note about her mom. Or she asking Monica about Oscar disappearing. We're allowed to have personal lives. Second, it was her practice, as well as ours, to conduct work on the .gov system. In those cases we didn't, which could have been for any reason, including State.gov<http://State.gov> being down. In those cases the onus is on us to make sure that anything that should have ended up in the right place did. Now, depending on what they are looking at, you can't easily determine if that happened. They are looking at HER email, not ours. They don't know what next step we took. The most important thing to ascertain from State is whether they are looking at specific email from the "300" - because in those cases Heather and I went one by one to determine if a) it needed to end up on .gov, and b) it did indeed end up there. Since there are less than a dozen instances of this in the 300 it was easy. One is me sending her a clip, no commentary. Another is her emailing me & Huma about something that I subsequently followed up on my .gov account. We did that for each and could share that if need be. If they've somehow seen some of the other 55k, we'd need to see each to determine what they were. Lastly, we should warn Monica. Huma, unless you want to Nick or I can.

Subject: For what it's worth. There is only one thing that needs to be done on this email thing. (Which I am sure nobody wants to do). Get a state dept career lawyer to go through all the emails and pull the official ones. I know all the reasons not to do it but it's going to happen so we should do it. Btw you know as well as I every god damn cabinet officer and WH staff uses there gmail account!
