Of course, this might be seen as just an opportunity to laugh at the incompetence of the Russian hackers and government press—once they realized their error, Sputnik took the article down. But then things got even more bizarre.

This false story was reported only by the Russian-controlled agency (a reference appeared in a Turkish publication, but it was nothing but a link to the Sputnik article). So how did Donald Trump end up advancing the same falsehood put out by Putin’s mouthpiece?

At a rally in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, Trump spoke while holding a document in his hand. He told the assembled crowd that it was an email from Blumenthal, whom he called “sleazy Sidney.”

“This just came out a little while ago,’’ Trump said. “I have to tell you this.” And then he read the words from my article.

“He’s now admitting they could have done something about Benghazi,’’ Trump said, dropping the document to the floor. “This just came out a little while ago.”

The crowd booed and chanted, “Lock her up!”

This is not funny. It is terrifying. The Russians engage in a sloppy disinformation effort and, before the day is out, the Republican nominee for president is standing on a stage reciting the manufactured story as truth. How did this happen? Who in the Trump campaign was feeding him falsehoods straight from the Kremlin? (The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment.)

Does no surprise me a bit.

Donald is incredibly sloppy with any sort of truth himself.

And now what does it matter...
The election is lost, so it's scortched Earth time. Donald was already fast and loose with "his" own party to begin with. But his party loved the childish irreverence. Now they go down with him.

1 down, 1 to go. Give the Dems all the rope. They'll hang themselves.

FBI etc have said hacked DNC emails were done by Russia. Russian media released claims of 'October Surprise' in a time frame that would not have allowed them to read through the dump ie immediately when wikileaks dumped them. Russian media was taken down quickly yet soon after there is Trump making the identical incorrect claim.

It's the common stupidity that links them together. Is it certain? No but it is more of a direct link than anything that Clinton Cash ever put together.

Dont be stupid. Its a known fact sputnik is the Russian equivalent of the Washington Post. RT is the equivalent of CNN.

Yes they are all mouthpieces for their respective governments.

I read all of them because only an idiot would read only one side of the coin.

Except the part where your sites are run out of the Kremlin and the US press is not run out of the White House. When a US president seizes the cable channels I will buy the equivalence.

No they are not the same at all. The proper press in this country is self critical. It is clearly NOT in Russia. You will never understand the difference because in this country it's your choice to read and believe whatever you want. And what you want is your bias confirmed. You can't handle anything close to the truth. You think Assad and Putin are wonderful humanitarians.

What do you read?

Hater likes to hide his sources. Almost never shares a link.

He must have a good reason.

sure but the windows to do so was short and it does make sense to ask the question. I don't have access to him personally.

The putative link between Trump and Russian hacking seems tenuous at best on the basis of what's disclosed here, but it's notable that Trump "doesn't know very much about Russia," but reads Russian disinformation word for word at the moment it's released.

This below is all I really got out of it. Very Trump sloppy. For the next month we will endure a lot more than this. This has got to be one of the worst campaigns ever for slinging slop without checking for validity. Normally an embarrassing mistake like this could turn a campaign. The Republicans now see this is the norm. The Democrats have pushed truth to the limit in a very calculated subversive way due to Hillary pushing the envelope. There is no envelope for Trump. The Trump campaign is loading a shot gun of crap and blindly firing into a field. It worked fine in business, he would just threaten to sue anyone for breathing.

Sputnik quickly removed the article once Eichenwald pointed out that the words were his, not Blumenthal’s. Then, in his campaign speech last night, Trump made reference to the Sputnik article (hours after it was published and spread on social media), claiming (obviously inaccurately) that even Blumenthal had criticized Clinton on Benghazi.
That’s all that happened. There is zero suggestion in the article, let alone evidence, that any WikiLeaks email was doctored: It wasn’t. It was just Sputnik misreporting the email. Once Sputnik realized that its article misattributed the text to Blumenthal, it took it down. It’s not hard to imagine how a rushed, careless Sputnik staffer could glance at that email and fail to realize that Blumenthal was forwarding Eichenwald’s article rather than writing it himself. And while nobody knows how this erroneous Sputnik story made its way to Trump for him to reference in his speech

The bolded:

Like anyone in the Trump campaign is looking for accuracy... Briebart campaign.
