View Full Version : The Future of SpursTalk

timvp

After much consideration, Kori and I have decided to relinquish our admin roles on SpursTalk as part of a reorganizational plan to ensure the site's brightest possible future. Although we have received lucrative offers to sell the message board and the domain, we have instead handed the keys over to a trusted original member of SpursTalk who we're confident can guide this ship to its full potential.

While more details will be posted soon, here are some key takeaways from our vision of SpursTalk's future:

-Free from the time-consuming, behind-the-scenes administrative drama, I will be able to participate on the forum on a regular basis. For this, I am excited.

-Kori and I will no longer have admin or moderator access (per our request). Instead, a new support process will be implemented to provide faster and more reliable support.

-To keep SpursTalk afloat, we signed off on plans to raise the needed money to pay for the server fees, vBulletin licensing fees, and other miscellaneous costs. For the last 13+ years, Kori and I have paid for everything out of our own pockets. Don't fret, there will be no advertisements. Rather, the money will be raised by charging new users a registration fee and offering optional 'upgrades' to current members.

-Kori and I will be donating $3,000 to the SpursTalk coffers to help ease the transition. It is our hope that between the initial $3,000, new registration fees, and optional upgrades, the new administration will be able to cover SpursTalk’s operational costs and keep the forum up and running in perpetuity.

-While many sites are increasing censorship, there are plans to decrease the censorship on SpursTalk even further. At the same time, new features will be added to help raise the bar in terms of quality content.

Overall, I haven't been as confident as I am now about the future of SpursTalk in a long while. Kori and I had a memorable ride owning and operating SpursTalk the last 14 or so years but now we're thrilled to be on the other side. I want to thank the original member who offered to grab the wheel and allow me to get back to doing the only thing I've ever wanted to do on SpursTalk: talk basketball.

With people paying greens to register, I highly doubt censorship would remain will remain free and even better as Memphis in 4 claims it to be.

Tons of new blood with decent takes like Chinook and Kawhistorm..paying for registration is really going to kill the numbers of new blood.

Looking forward to op's hilariously wrong predictions, per par and the mindless casuals sucking his tip in his bb analysis filled with wrong prediction cliche and antiquated takes. Was always a part of the spurstalk culture...sad that it had to end in 2013.

Apa is such a faggot. Quit trying so damn hard jesus.

Anyway as far as the registration fees go my worries would be the same as others. That there wont be any new members due to the fees. I know I personally would probably never pay to post on a basketball forum. I have actually never heard of one you have to pay for.

Who is taking over the site btw? Is it NoNo?

Regarding forthcoming new registration fees, registration has been turned off 99.9% of the time for years now due to the inability of vBulletin to stop spammers. So, while the majority of potential new members won't pay the nominal fee, we'll still see more new members than we have in a long time, even if just 1% pay.

Blocks spammers; helps keep SpursTalk alive. Not too terrible.

Premuim accounts is the way to go. But Kori probably made her decision already so its pointless at this point. Just hope they're right.

I also doubt the carelessness, laidback, racist, sexist culture of spurstalk would continue to exist soon as the paid members outmembers the old members..I know that can be 5 years from.now and by that time we're probably not posting at spurstalk anymore..but still

Thats false. Thought you Asians were supposed to be good with numbers. Plus alot of my post are laughing emoticons or something if I find something funny. Yours on the other hand are made up stories about your life or extensive trolling attempts.

I dont care about my e rep, I come here to talk ball and have some fun. Wanting to be a "known poster" on a basketball forum and equating your worth with that is very sad and points to the fact that your real life probably sucks. I don't care if I am known, I don't derive self worth from this site. Anyone can be known if they are trying to be edgy and cool instead of just being themselves.

I'd pay a fee, just to make sure it keeps going. As annoying as this place can be sometimes, it's still far and away the best place for info about the Spurs. It's always been Big Boy's Rules here, and I know a lot of people are intimidated by that. But I'd hate to change the place in order to get more registrations.

Edit: I'd also pay a registration fee if there was a guarantee that TIMVP would get back to doing post-game grades, etc. When we were in the Middle East, and couldn't watch all the games, that was priceless.

wtf...a Nutribullet seems like a great gift. I remember back in elementary school when we all exchanged presents and someone with lazy ass parents would give a coupon book to McDonalds. That's a bad gift. I knew it was a bad gift back then but now that I think about it, it's even worse because it's really a gift to the kid's parents. And iirc, the coupons were never for anything I ordered anyway. Maybe a free drink or fries. But most of them were for hamburgers.

Seriously...when was the last time anyone ever ordered the regular hamburger at McDonald's??? I never have.

Years of kissing Uncle & Aunt's a** has finally paid off. You have no idea how bad Unc's cooking is around the holidays and the ridiculous gifts I've gotten (who buys someone a nutrabullet?? I mean, obviously last minute at Macy's panic gift).

But I knew, if I just showed up, ate that food and smiled that one day I'd get tickets to the big show.

Welcome to the New Era of SpursTalk.

Thanks for the job done, it´s been really great for me since i found this forum and i appreciate what you´ve done along with Kori.

Hope now you can enjoy the forum as we do.

About the censorship, while i disagree with some opinions on this site, i do appreciate the fact that everything can be said and discussed the opinions should not be censored, about nudity and stuff it´s up to the parents to be aware of what their child is looking in the internet and about any other activities those are up to the law enforcers to detect and cese anything that is not law abiding if the case ever pop ups.

So again, i enjoyed very much how you´ve run this forum and greet you for a job well done.

Have fun talking basketball now.

Don't think paid memberships will contribute as much as expected. I'm all for free memberships and then members have the option to pay for "Premium." Maybe access to a premium forum and random perks like spurs icons or a different colored username. It would give members (who care enough to pay) a place to post where there's less nonsense, while still keeping the original spurs forum and NBA forum for the shenanigans.

Just my 2 cents.

wildbill2u

As I asked in October, what is the purpose of all the secrecy about the new owner/operator/administrator?. According to WHOIS.com, the SpursTalk domain is still owned by Johnathan Ellis and he is the contact for all administration and technological questions. I can understand some lackadaisical attitude toward official administration changes since this is more of a hobby for whoever runs it. But if the "new" administration is supposed to provide " a new support process will be implemented to provide faster and more reliable support." we have yet to see it.

And the lack of any support process is particularly annoying now that our browser applications are giving us messages that the site is 'deceptive' and may be putting malware on our computers. A responsible owner or administrator would be on top of the possibility that the site may have been hacked by some malicious operator. Whoever the administrator is, something ought to be done and an announcement to the members about the malware situation should be made.

Respectful is overrated. If you want to know something Spurs-related, this is the place to come. You may have to wade through the sewer tunnels, and dodge a few alligators. But if you don't come here, you won't be as knowledgeable. Hard core Spurs fans are hard core.
