Green will be missed, but...October. Non-issue.

Hopefully the injury isn't one of those lingering ones tho...Spurs can't afford for him to be in & out, nor can they afford another mid-thirties 3P% season from him.

Good point. He should absorb more minutes, in support of the back court. We'll see what happens.

HarlemHeat37

Manu might start, but I don't expect his minutes to increase significantly..

I don't really believe in Simmons, so it'll be up to Kyle to show something IMO..

Green is the most durable player on the team, this is Anderson's best shot to prove himself IMO..

Yup. Can't be a matter of who he's on the court with, he's gotta show up regardless.

Most likely, Simmons will start but we might see Kawhi at the 2 & Kyle or Bertans at the 3.

Manu will need to get his reps w/ the bench crew so I don't see him starting.

Manu doesn't bring much defense these days either, and at least with Bertans you get someone who knows his role: shoot the ball. Manu and Parker lose some of their effectiveness without the ball in their hands (especially Parker with his mediocre spot-up ability) and with the SL chock-full of players who need the ball in their hands things could get extremely messy.

Id rather they keep Garino, I have a bad feeling about this in general. Every season it's someone and it's weird Danny started with a bruise that kept him out of contact drills at least 2 weeks and now this. He's been an ironman two seasons. Remarkably durable and healthy.

Really doesn't make sense to start Manu in a season opener & have him waste energy trying to guard Klay. This is the perfect opportunity for Simmons/Kyle to prove they are worthy of rotation minutes for the rest of the season. Coaches are usually assessing their players/rotation early in the season so Pop most likely doesn't mind the injury as much as he would have after the trade deadline.

I posted in another thread, Garino would be wisest pick for roster spot for this very reason. He covers alot more positions on defense and he's solid on offense. He's more versatile than Forbes, defensively speaking. He could theoretically start so the rotation is butchered like pop has done in the past, but who knows. Maybe pop isn't too concerned with wins and losses which should be paramount this year.

I would not be mad at Garino being the 15th guy for those very reasons. And, for most teams, the 15th guy is generally a near-disaster when on the court, but Garino is pretty controlled. He knows his limitations, yet isn't inhibited by them.

I can get behind this.

I think it's just change the game plan and go for kyle. Kyle is an ok defender, just not the same type of player Danny guards. On offense, Kyle can bring more with regards to creating/ball handling, but he's a reluctant floor spacer.

I feel Pop may tinker with things and go more offense than defense for a little while. Also think you see two PG lineups some with TP/Patty.

But defensively, Dijon may be the best shot at giving the defensive effort Danny does.

A lot of fairweather fans that have only been around for the "good years." Would have love to have seen them around for the 2009 - '10 season when the team only won 50 games and had to start Roger Mason Jr.

One idiot is acctually bailing early and talking up the Cowboys. As if they won't start choking once Romo returns and starts losing them games.

Anyway, Danny's defense will be sorely missed for the next 3 weeks, but especially against the ridiculous Golden State lineup on Tuesday. His shooting hadn't appeared much better from last season (note: couldn't watch games, only looking at box score), so I'm not sure how his absence would effect the offense.

Dijounte or Davis will have to play some early season minutes which is good to evaluate where they are at early on. Needless to say, Anderson and Simmons will really need to show that Pop and company's faith in them is justified. Otherwise, they'll need to start scouring the trash heap for some needed wing depth or help.

Had to do with him being a first-round pick and the team "having" to bring him over. I don't know the real details of the matter, but I believe Chinook went over it during the summer time.

He is definitely a waste of a roster spot unless he magically jumps up huge levels in ability the next few weeks and months.

He is probably the worst player on any NBA roster, right now.

Not sure exactly, but I believe if you draft a player in the 1st round and go certain amount of years without signing them they become a free agent. So the Spurs "promised" to draft and eventually bring over Jean-Charles with the understanding that he would have a roster spot waiting for him.

Gonna have to let someone with more intimate knowledge of the CBA and the Jean-Charles/Spurs situation add more intricate details. From my understanding their hands were tied and they were more or less "forced" to bring him over.

I would have much rather had Nikola Milutinov brought over and used the last roster spot to find another wing option to really compete with Simmons.

It will be Kyle and Kawhi starting at the wings. Whether you want to call it SF or SG, it's all the same. Pop views wings as interchangeable, which I agree with. What they're labeled as (SG or SF) has more to do with their size, not skill set.

Gross. The starting lineup with Kyle in there had 6 points at the 6 minute mark against a D'Antoni team last night...

Yes, in the Duncan era those were the "salad" years. Obviously, those weren't truly "bad" seasons but to fans used to winninng and contending they were.

Pretty sure half the people on this board haven't been following the team since around 1997.

Freaking out is a stupid reaction when Pop, Kawhi, the front-office, (to a lesser extent) LaMarcus, Tony and Manu are still around. They'll probay win the division (have you looked at the other teams rosters (?)), but winning a title will be tough with or without Duncan.

Like I said, cliff jumping and overacting is silly when you still have a top 4 player and the best coach in the NBA.

Most of this board is a bunch of bandwagon jumpers. Very few were fans pre-Duncan. It drives me nuts how some of these idiots want to immediately rebuild the team and trade LMA. My home team is the Hornets and I can say straight up it's not fun watching a shitty team year in and year out and just hoping they can become mediocre. Most of these fans don't have a clue how difficult it is to rebuild. They assume if the spurs rebuild that the FO will be able to build a contender in a few years but that's not guaranteed. The Warriors are the favorites but I still like having a top 4-5 team versus having to root for a 20-30 win squad.

Expect Anderson to start, Leonard to primarily defend shooting guards, Simmons to be the fourth wing and Forbes to push for spot minutes.

I don't know if it's the outdated positional listing or weight (he's actually roughly 230, though obviously still lacks strength), but Bertans is not an option at small forward. He said himself that he'll be exclusively playing power forward and has been deployed as such in the preseason. Besides, outside of him, this is a roster with 4 and 1/2 bigs and 9 and 1/2 points and wings.

I became a fan in the early 90s. I went thought the injury riddled 20-62 season. That was rough. I couldn't watch any of the games, but I still followed the team. Each game I thought, maybe we can win this game, maybe we can win a few games and get on a bit of a run, maybe we can get into the playoffs and D-Rob and Sean will be back. I thought the team played hard, but they simply just didn't have the talent to win games. That was a real tough season. As soon as Tim retired some people wanted to rebuild, but I thought back to that season and thought there is no way that I want to rebuild with the talent we have on this team. No way do I want to flush the season down the toilet. I just don't know what certain fans around here are thinking. Even if the Spurs rebuild, there's no guarantee that they'd even get back to the level of this current team, and if they do, it might take years. Why the fuck would people want to do that? Why not take a chance with the talent we have and try and win now. It's crazy to just blow it up. There's no guarantees of anything doing that. Fucking spoiled fans for sure.

Pop will most likely place one of the 3rd string SGs in Green's place so it doesn't disrupt the normal bench rotation. This is the question I've most been wondering about. If Anderson starts then who plays SF on the bench. Keeping Simmons or Forbes in the spot seems best for the rotations. It's going to be interesting.

Pop on Danny's significance:

“He’s probably more important to us defensively against a team like that than he is offensively,” Popovich said. “He is going to make shots or miss shots, but at the defensive end, he has really been important for us. And against a team that runs offense so well like Golden State, that will be a challenge (to face the Warriors without him).”

Manu:

We will miss his defense in this game, particularly, because he is one of our top defenders and can guard multiple positions,” Ginobili said.

Pop again:

With Green out, backups Kyle Anderson and Jonathon Simmons are expected to have greater roles. Anderson started in place of Green last Friday when the Spurs beat the Rockets in the preseason finale.

“We’ll spend a lot of time trying to get them to be a little bit more consistent (defensively) because they are going to get minutes,” Popovich said of Anderson and Simmons. “And they are not going to be end-of-game kind of minutes. They are going to be important (ones). So we will see after the first seven, eight, nine, 10 games if they are really picking everything up and being consistent at the defensive end.”

We can't guard this GSW one on one, no one can. Defense is good but we would never hold them under 40%, especially at home. I am sure it would be better to score more points on them, than we usually do. In this regard Bertans on SF and Kawhi on SG would be awesome in terms of experimental basketball which Pop loves especially in first months of regular season games.

agreed, he was very productive in his prime and an excellent team player, but he was never super athletic or high efficiency on offense. Great on defense and the glass. I'd rank Prime Garnett over Prime Duncan, though.

:lol I was actually WAY more intimately into basketball in 2003 and 2004 than I have been in recent years, because I was 9-10 years old back then, not in school, not chasing girls yet and literally had nothing else to fucking do but watch NBA and play computer games.

I saw the Spurs in 2003 and that still was probably my favorite championship season. It was so glorious. But there were tons of close calls and more often than not it was the other guys who were carrying TD, not the other way around. TD got a lot of rebounds and was a force on defense, no doubt. Offensively, he just wasn't as dynamic as Garnett in 2004, though. TD got spoonfed a lot and his 4-down post efficiency just wasn't that great. TD seemed to take off quite a few games. In 2004, Minnesota was the #1 seed in the West and Garnett was all they had because of the Joe Smith incident, but damn if the T'Wolves weren't elite... Garnett was IMPOSSIBLE to stop and on defense, his blocks, unlike TD's, were actually forceful enough to amp up his crowd and team. Garnett was an absolute albatross out there.

Look, you're pretty much remembering wrong. TD carried the Spurs in 2003. It was one of the best single Championship seasons by an individual player ever. He had to carry a huge load without a true second all-star. I don't even really want to waste my time as I'm too busy to write a long reply out. Minnesota's 2004 team definitely had talent as they had Sprewell and Sam Cassell. They definitely had talent on that team. If anything, they helped him get out of the first round for the first time.

Tim Duncan was also absolutely dominant back then in the low post. He was also a hell of a lot more athletic from 1997 to around 2003 as he had elite lateral quickness back then, which is why he was one of the best defenders of all time. He wasn't the highest jumper, but jumping isn't the only thing athleticism is based on. He was getting double and triple teamed, which is what allowed the Spurs shooters to be open. The reason Stephen Jackson and all those guys were good was because of Tim Duncan, not the other way around. Even Kevin McHale said that after he traded KG, he said KG isn't a player like Tim Duncan where you can give TD the ball at the end of the game, and if you're down, he'll score the points needed to win you the game. He said KG couldn't do that. McHale himself would have taken TD over KG. I have no fucking idea how a so called Spurs fan picks KG over TD.

I'd really like to know. Is there any other Spurs fan or other unbiased NBA fan on this board that would take KG over Tim?

i actually watched every game that was televised that season. that was such a brutal year. didn't we finish that year with dominique wilkins as our PF?

Yep, Dominique was on that team. I would have watched every game if I could have, but I"m not in the US so I didn't have access to watch any games back then. I felt really bad for him. He wasn't supposed to be the best player on the team, but unfortunately he had to try and carry the team because of all the injuries. I thought that team under Pop really played hard. Even though we had a poor record, I really liked his coaching back then. I thought he got those guys to play hard.

Danny Green (left quad) should return to action "within the next week," according to coach Gregg Popovich.

This is encouraging news for Green's fantasy owners, as he was initially expected to be sidelined until later this month. Green had a disappointing year last season, but was a top-40 overall fantasy player back in 2014-15. His upside is tremendous due to his versatile skill set. If Green is still floating around on your waiver wire, go get him. Nov 5 - 12:04 PM
