View Full Version : Chicago
Is Chicago the shittiest major us city? By Major I mean a city in the top 20 or so in population.
I am from the midwest and must say Chicago is probably one of the worst major cities to live in. Cool place to visit, shitty place to live.
I have plenty of friends who like to rep Chicago and they get super butthurt if you talk down on it, they always like to pretend they are as good as New York. Cracks me up.

I've never been to either, but from most opinions I've gotten it's Cleveland or Detroit.

Yeah...there's no way Chicago is shittier than Detroit right?
I meant like really large cities. Detroit really isn't that big anymore. Cleveland isn't really that large either.
Cities near 1 million people. So like top 15 or so on this list maybe even down to 20. I mean I guess you could count Detroit, but it has fallen off so much hard to call it a major city anymore.

chicago is a beautiful city with great architecture and history. top 5 city in america.

On that list, it's not even close to the worst IMO..
Philly is the worst..disgusting city, shitty people, etc..
I've visited SA twice..nice people, but wasn't too live..
Jacksonville is full of white trash:lol I was only there for a day, but wouldn't visit again..
Never been to Indianapolis, but it doesn't seem like somewhere I would want to live or even visit..

I'd have to actually analyze to assess living situation, though(cost of living, transportation, traffic, etc)..much different story than tourism..
For example, I've lived in Toronto and NY for virtually all my life, and while I love the cities and believe they are among the best to visit, I wouldn't want to live in either of them anymore, tbh..I'm excited to leave TO..

like any city it depends on where you decide to set roots. i'd choose to live in chicago over san antonio any day of the week and this is my home. i love my city but chicago is shitting on it as far as opportunities, schools, parks and the all around way of life.

Chicago also has far higher crime rates and is expensive as shit to live in a nice area. If you want a nice house you need to live outisde the city in the burbs which means you are commuting. Traffic there is awful compared to San Antonio.
Guess depends what you are looking for in life. The lake being right there is nice though.

Chicago is cool as fuck to visit. My wifes family lives there and she went to high school in Chicago. Crappy place to live though imo. Maybe if your single in your 20's its ok. Can't raise a family there though tbh, and you need to be getting paid. Not gonna have a big/nice house either. All the houses in city limits are old as fuck.

the crime rate is concentrated to a very small part of the city that i will never need to set foot in. yea its expensive but like you said, you can commute from surrounding suburbs. most of us who live in big cities commute anyways so thats no biggie.
but yea, its all about preference.

I wouldn't say a very small part of the city. Hell its pretty much the whole south side and west side. Even where my wifes family is from and lives on the northside is a little sketchy tbh.
Nowhere near as nice as North San Antonio, Austin, or Dallas tbh.

Never been to Detroit, but I have been to Flint and Ann Arbor. Flint was a shit-hole, but Ann Arbor seemed like a fun college town. I'm guessing Detroit is more of the former, and from my experience people from Michigan aren't what I would call friendly. I have been to Chicago, and I think it's a beautiful city with classic architecture and the lake is nice. Everyone I talk to that comes from Houston can't stand it though I've only rolled through a few times for Six Flags.

Been to Chicago only once maybe 7 years ago, and probably still my favorite US city to visit. As Trill said, the architecture is gorgeous. In terms of living there, can't speak to it as I imagine most people are only talking about the visiting aspect (unless you've lived in every major city).
Of places I've visited:
1. Chicago
2. San Francisco
3. Washington, D.C
4. New York
5. San Diego
6. LA
7. Philly (:lol)

Chicagos skyline is awesome. Proposed to my wife on a boat cruise on Lake Michigan with the skyline in the background. Was pretty dope.
Honestly Austin might be my favorite city I have visited. Dallas is pretty legit as well.
Chicago is cool to visit.
Shittiest city I have visited award goes to Cincinnati.

I wouldn't want to raise a family here in Atlanta but it's a really beautiful city. I've been living here for a month already and I've been surprised as to how beautiful it is. Granted I can only compare it to San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans and Seattle as those are the only major U. S. cities I've been to.
As far as Chicago goes, I have a good friend that lives there and absolutely hates it, hates it like I've never seen someone hate a place so much. Just by hearing her talk about it, it's a place I never want to visit.

Yeah living and visiting is two entirely different things. It's all preference though. Chicago is a huge urban city with a dense population, if you ever want to own a decent house around the area, it's going to be loud, and expensive...You will eventually get tired of all the positives. Plus, I hear a lot of terrible things about people from chicago..but I suppose that's the case with most bigger cities.
It's similar to Toronto in a lot of sense. Enjoyed visiting the area, but no way I'm living in a city with crazy traffic, way too many people, super expensive smaller houses etc...So shitty.
I'm comfortbale where I live now. Smaller city with about 800k, houses are cheap and most people have decent sized lots. Very diverse in terms of ethnic minority, and people in general are nice. Lots of outdoor things to do just outside the perimter.
Night life is decent too..
Only thing bad is the winter.

chicago is a great city, i wouldn't mind living there. dunno wtf you are talking about.... you need money almost anywhere to live in a good part of town in a big city.
i think new york also fits the description of cool place to visit moreso than chi town

I love living in the city. Lived in the loop, it was awesome, 2min commute to work...only part that sucked was it shuts down by 8PM. Was nice being a 5 min walk from all the bars in River North though.
Honestly, I prefer Chicago to NYC (granted I've only visited a few times for work, but got to stay some weekends).
What makes you hate the city?

:lol I'm the opposite....can't see myself not living in the big city/metro area, especially in my industry. I couldn't be in Winnipeg simply because of the cold-ass winter.

Winnipeg offers the shitiest of careers, tbh. Manitoba in general can barely produce a decent amount of career opportunities and it's possibly the main reason why even after aggressive pro-immigration outlooks, the city barely increased its population by 200k in 40 years. ..Manitoba was basically begging for immigrants to come in the 80s :lol...It's a lot more strict now, but barely.
Still, if you're lucky enough to be working in your own industury..Would rather stay in MB..
Can totally see the strong preference with urban life though...I can't imagine worrying about a career in an urban area. My buddy keeps on telling me to live in toronto..apperently, getting a decent job is comparatively easier..much easier than winnipeg.
Seriously, you wouldnt want to live in winnipeg man...:lol, and if you do come here..weather is the last reason why you would want to leave the city. I suppose, I just personally enjoy the smaller community..I can go to a park outside the perimter and not have to worry about leashing my dog.

Can't think of Chicago and not think of.....
Muddy Waters
Howlin' Wolf
Walter Payton
Michael Jordan
Dick Butkus
Mike Ditka
Little Walter
The Galloping Ghost
"Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers winning the NWA World title from Pat O' Conner
Gale Sayers
Willie Galimore
Bronko Nagurski
Jimmy Reed
Sonny Boy Williamson
We had a decent discussion and this fuck had to come in with his shitty list that no one cares about.
Anyway someone asked my dislikes about Chicago.
Crime rate is super high,
buildings are all old as shit,
extremely overcrowded and alot of traffic.
Even the good parts of town are still kind of sketchy.
Really cant have a house that was built before the 40's if you actually live in city limits.
The winters are fucking cold as shit.
People aren't friendly.
Even downtown which is the best part about the city has a shit ton of bums.
Super expensive if you want to live in the nice parts. Have 3 buddies who all have decent jobs and have to split a two bedroom apartment in the nice area of town because its so pricey.
Downtown Chicago is really cool and a hell of alot of fun to visit. Can't imagine ever living in Chicago though. I have visited most of the larger cities in the US and it is towards the bottom of the list of places I could see myself living. In fairness I prefer warm weather states which is part of the issue.

Chicago today is Detroit in the early to mid 80s, but thankfully with enough clean people to offset the deporables from the inner-city.

Chicago is a great place to visit. Great restaurants, great sports, tons of stuff to do, and the people are great. It's like a world-class version of Cleveland. Obviously there are bad areas but that's the case in every major city. As far as the biggest cities go I'll take it over L.A. any day, although Manhattan is on a different level than anywhere else I've ever been to.
As far as smaller cities go my favorite is Pittsburgh. Really a nice little city. As far as cities that are nice to live in I'd say Columbus. There's a lot of money in Columbus and some really nice suburbs.

haha I believe I said in a nice part of town. And actually they don't really have large homes. Most of the houses in Chicago are tiny and old as shit.
Well played though.
Just noticed the raise a family part lol.

OMG I love Chicago!
OK inner city crime is the worst in the nation…But Chicago rocks! Cadillac’s, big houses, tree lined neighborhoods, big people…I have relatives there & when my sister & I go to visit we are treated like royalty. It is an amazing town where folks love to eat and drink! You can’t get a bad meal in Chicago… The worst dive pizza joint is better than anything we have in LA. Chicago dogs! Supreme tamales! Before there was ever a McDonalds Chicago had Supreme tamale stands! Not only a rich Italian heritage but a rich Mexican influence as well…Some of the best Mexican food in the world is in Chicago. You can take classes on weekends to learn how to butcher, roast and BBQ a pig & make to best carnitas on the planet. My sister & I are both thin by Chicago standards & people will come up to us and ask where we are from…When we tell them from LA the next thing they ask is Say something weird, say something weird. :lol
If you like big beautiful girls, big cars, big meals, people who love to laugh, Chicago is the town to be in!

I know a lot of people who live in Chicago and pretty much love it unanimously. Detroit has issues but seems to be on the upswing.
I'd probably say Houston. Terrible weather, terrible traffic, endless strip malls, and I think it might be the only major city that is so close to the ocean without actually being on the ocean.

Chicago is amazing. There are really shitty areas like south and westside, but honestly why the hell would you live there?
The North side of the city and those nearby suburbs are booming, great neighborhoods, awesome places to raise a family.
So much stuff to do there, and as stated earlier amazing architecture and character to the city.
Unless you broke AF anyways why consider moving to any city in america if you can't live on a nicer side? No one moves to NY and says "yo im moving to the shittiest area where people get killed"
