View Full Version : OT: I'm impressed with Baseball athletes ability to play over 180 games in one season...

No other sport play that many games in a single season. In fact, some weeks they play 3 to 4 back to back to backs..:wow
I can't imagine the daily cardio and conditioning they have to go through to play that many games. Impressive.
6 games in one week...Name me another sport that plays their players 6 times a week....
Is it even humanly possibly to play intense, mentally tiring, physically exhausting games 180 times in a single season of about 6 months?

It's grueling. T-Mac couldn't handle 5 games in a fuckin' Independent league. And he said he was committed to playing the full schedule.
I know you're being facetious, but like I always tell you, stamina is the easiest shit to endure. Which is why I find it funny how modern NBA players are complaining about back2back's. 80's was a higher tempo game, and they had little problem handling the schedule.

It should be possible for basketball. Players are treated with kid gloves today. And I think our Pop might've set the trend with his emphasis on "rest." 30 min per game for 21 year olds :lol
Basketball players have proven they can play 82 games plus playoffs and then easily jump into their national team or Euroleague schedules. Oscar Schmidt played pro basketball for 30 years.

Minus the heat, playing baseball day after day is not generally that hard. There is no athlete that would not feel a toll playing all the games in July and August though.

Baseball is stupid like that. It should be a weekend and holiday sport only.
No other sport in the mainstream plays every day because why would you want to? That's an unnecessary grind and it ties up your time. What if you have business back at home but are stuck on an 11-game road trip? And it must be physically and mentally taxing, even for a sport like baseball that doesn't constantly force you to exert all of your physical energy second after second, minute after minute, play after play.
They'd never give up the potential revenue but the season should have roughly as many games as the NBA and NHL.

I'm okay with something like a 100 game season. This keeps individual stars from being too impactful, keeps roster building interesting, and will better preserve starting pitchers, enabling them to go deep into games. I'm not a fan of the recent trend of starters going 5 or 6 innings and then dominant bullpens coming in. It robs some late action and comebacks out of the game. It'll also start the playoffs earlier so they don't have to go up against regular season football, which will heighten national interest for baseball's post-season.

I don't necessarily agree with mid about the athleticism of baseball players(excluding guys like Trout, etc), I don't think most of them are special in that regard, but the sport itself is difficult as fuck, tbh..
I actually went to the cage the other day and hit some 90MPH balls..I hadn't done it in a minute, forgot how to difficult it is to simply make contact, even on a ball that doesn't have movement..kills your hands, too..

How do you judge athleticism?
The average 60 yard dash times and vertical leaps in the MLB are comparable to the numbers we see in the NFL (when those 60 yard dash times are converted to 40 yard dash times, even with acceleration taken into account) and the NBA. The act of hitting uses more muscles at the same time than any other action in mainstream sports and the shoulder joints in pitchers rotate the fastest out of all athletes, even faster than the hip joints in sprinters.
And you need to build up your lateral quickness to elite levels to play 6 out of the 9 fielding positions because that fraction of a second jump you get on a ball is the difference between making and not making the play.
I do think baseball players are the 3rd best athletes "overall" behind NFL and NBA players, but not by a significant margin.

And they play in air conditioned arenas. MEANWHILE baseball players are subjected to the elements. Often times doing it in 90 degrees or above. FOR 4-5 hours a day minimum when you take pre-game BP and fielding into account.

Grueling? I actually enjoyed watching the world series but come on bro. Let's be real, a normal day at the office is fielding 3-4 plays, 3-4 at bats, and a couple minutes of baserunning. The rest is sitting/standing around while chewing sunflower seeds.

Yes. You guys are under the impression that baseball players just play the game and that's it. A day at the office for 100m sprinter is around 20 seconds (2 heats per day).
"Well, 100m sprinters train like crazy and give 100% of their effort during a sprint."
Same thing with baseball players. You think they just sit around before and after the game doing nothing? Baseball is a "sprinting" game where fractions of second and fractions of inch can be the difference between a win and a loss. If Kris Bryant is not in top tier shape, topping out at 20mph (about Lionel Messi's top speed) off of the sac fly and Rizzo's single, you're not World Series Champions.
On that play I was complaining about that Gonzalez's slow ass didn't beat out, Baez geared up to 18 mph over about 30 feet charging that ball. And he has a top speed of 21.7mph that would be among the top ten of the fastest soccer players in the world. Yeah, try "sitting around" and see if you can become that athletic.
You guys focus too much on the few fat pitchers and DH's (doesn't mean they're unathletic). It's like me focusing on the skinnyfats in soccer (our most promising soccer star has the physique of a woman) and declaring the whole sport is filled with unimpressive athletes.

All pro athletes practice and work on their bodies, not just fatball players. I'm referring to the actual games. They aren't all that physically demanding which is why they're able to play as many games as they do. And why the're able to play so many days in a row. No other sport would be able to do that without it's players dropping like flies with injuries.

Who cares? You can have 100m sprint meets everyday and Usain Bolt is praised as "one of the greatest athletes in the world."
Doesn't change the fact that baseball players have to elite athletes on average to be any good.
And pitchers do drop like flies. Their injury rate is higher than that of pro basketball, and a pitcher might only play 30 games per season over more months.
Take it from me. Basketball is significantly less demanding than pitching.

I don't get the baseball hater's logic. They worship athletes like Usain Bolt whose "in game" workload is a joke compared to baseball players.
"Well, Usain Bolt is the fastest man in the world!"
Aroldis Chapman holds the world record for the fastest OBJECT ever thrown by a man. And Chapman actually has to execute something that takes an extreme amount of skill and precision while throwing that fast. The only skill Bolt has to worry about is getting his stride right. And Chapman's shoulder joint moves faster than Bolt's hip joint.
And hitters generate the most core power out of any ball sport athlete. You got Giancarlo Stanton hitting balls close to 130 mph.

The games themselves aren't terribly demanding. How often have you seen a baseball player break a sweat, much less get drenched in it? I doubt they even get their heart rates up even close to other wports. Not even pitchers and catchers.
